ANNUAL GALA DINNER DANCE FEBRUARY 28, 2015 The Candler Field Museum's Women's Auxiliary will present our annual dinner dance on Saturday, February 28, Those of you who attended last year will probably be first in line to get tickets for the 2015 event. Last year was spectacular and we anticipate this year being even better. The Peachtree Jazz Edition orchestra will be playing throughout the evening and a great dinner will be served by Barnstormer's Grill. I would recommend that you purchase your tickets early as we have already sold over 22 tables. Tickets are currently on sale at Barnstormer's Grill, by calling , or by going online CLICK HERE. Candler Field Museum Youth Program As most readers are aware, Candler Field Museum has a very active youth program. The program allows young men and women to actually work in an aviation restoration and maintenance environment. They participate in restoring antique airplanes under the watchful eyes of professional mentors. The group consists of approximately 30 kids in addition to over 10 active mentors. We also
have one full-time mechanic on staff who provides oversight for the restoration process. Volunteer Jim Hoak is responsible for scheduling and coordinating students and mentors. Currently, there are three airplanes in various stages of restoration - a Piper Super Cub, an Aeronca Champ, and a Kinner Bird biplane. When complete the Aeronca Champ will be placed in the Candler Field Flying Club and will be available for the young aviators to fly. The kids are earning flying time in club airplanes by putting in hours of work on t he airplane projects. We have had 2 of our young people solo an airplane and we have several more receiving instruction at this time. We have been in discussions with the Pike County School Superintendent, Dr. Michael Duncan along with the Griffin Spalding School Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones regarding possible placement of high school students into our program. Dr. Duncan recently brought a group of about 40 high school students to our facility to assess their interest level. We are very excited about the possibility of working with the school systems to assist young people in making career decisions. We are hopeful that as they experience working with aircraft they will be better equipped to make a decision regarding a possible aviation vocation. We need volunteers to assist with mentoring. We need tools and equipment. We need funding to assist us in keeping the program alive. Please consider helping out with this very worthwhile program. You can contact Ron Alexander or Jim Hoak for more information on how you can help. ronalexander@mindspring.com or planejim@bellsouth.net If you would like to donate money to the program please CLICK HERE and designate your donation to the Youth Program.

ANOTHER FILM SHOOT AT CANDLER FIELD On January 3rd and 4th a filming crew from Atlanta descended on Peach State Aerodrome to shoot a documentary for Delta Air Lines. The documentary will be used to introduce a Delta Global Leadership Conference. Three days were spent filming the 3 minute segment. The Stearman Model 6 was one of the stars replicating one of Delta's original crop dusters. The story portrayed Delta Founder C.E. Woolman reliving historical moments during the early days of the company. Several Candler Field Museum cars and trucks were also part of the show. Pictures of the filming are below. The Stearman Model 6 with the Delta Air Service logo along with the same logo on the CAP building in the background.

Local celebrity Nicolas Stiles played a part in the film. FLABOB UPDATE News from Riverside, CA by Jon Goldenbaum Andy Andersen has been around Flabob as long as anyone can remember; he is one of our best known and most loved Flabobians. Now in his 90 s Andy had a great career as a railroad man while filling his leisure time with motorcycles, airplanes and photography. Andy has always been the official photographer of Flabob, almost any picture of consequence over the past four decades was taken by Andy. In addition, he is one of our most active volunteers, tirelessly working on fly-ins and all manner of youth programs. For many years Andy was inseparable from his beautiful straight- tail Cessna 150, distinctly painted on the side of the cowl Andy Andersen, Flabob Airport Bum. He kept the airplane in immaculate condition, highly polished, perfectly maintained, and housed in a shade hangar right outside our Café. For many visitors, Andy s airplane was the signature airplane o f the airport, glossy, looking like brand new, inviting people to fly. Over the years he gave countless Young Eagle rides in his beauty, he has hundreds of photos of excited first- time young flyers with him in his ship.
When Andy had to give up flying for medical reasons, he donated his beautiful airplane to the Tom Wathen Center specifically to be used for aviation youth education. For the past few years the airplane was flown by our Flabob Aero Club, but without Andy s loving care, it began to lose its luster and personality. Recently we were approached by ex-flabobian Doug Edwards who serves on the Board of the Clark County Skills Center in Vancouver Washington. The Skills Center introduces trades to high school students from 9 different school systems in Southern Washington. Last year they decided to add an Aviation program, Doug immediately thought of Andy s airplane as a perfect fit for his young people. Doug contacted us, we made a deal, and now the airplane is off to a career doing exactly what Andy wanted: bringing young people into aviation. On Feb. 4th, Doug traveled to Flabob to accept the airplane in a formal transfer ceremony that honored Andy. Flabobians turned out in great numbers to recognize the Flabob Airport Bum for his friendship, generosity and profound impact on our airport, community, and aviation in general. 9 WOMEN'S AVIATION CAREER DAY Pictured are the ladies who volunteered their time to be panelists for the Candler Field Museum's annual Women's Aviation Career Day. January 18th the Candler Field Museum hosted a career day for women. A number of young people and their parents attended the event to learn more about a career in aviation. Panelists included pilots, aerospace engineers, maintenance technicians, and numerous other aviation related vocations. Each gave a short presentation followed by an extensive question and answer period. We intend to host this event in January of each year.

LOCAL EAA CHAPTER 468 HAS NEW PRESIDENT During Chapter 468's monthly meeting in December museum member and youth mentor Barbara Kitchens was elected as president. Serving with Barbara for this year will be Donna Reynolds as Secretary and Tom Sorrell as Treasurer. The chapter meets the fourth Saturday of each month at 10 AM in the museum library. Please join us this month.

The momentous conclusion to World War II in 1945 will be celebrated 70 years later as the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dixie Wing hosts the 12th annual WWII Heritage Days from 9am-4pm April 18-19, The history festival will take place at the Dixie Wing s Historical Airpower Facility, Atlanta Regional Airport-Falcon Field, Peachtree City, Ga. Since its beginning as a small, one-day program in 2003, WWII Heritage Days has evolved into the largest annual World War II-theme event in Georgia. The weekend will again feature historic aircraft, antique cars, vintage military vehicles, education displays, demonstrations by re-enactors portraying Allied and Axis troops, and activities for school-age children. A highlight planned for the weekend is a panel discussion series featuring World War II veterans. Most historians consider the Second World War the pivotal event of the Twentieth Century, involving more than 30 countries and 100 million people from 1939 to The United States entry in the war in 1941 ultimately provided the Allies with decisive industrial and manpower resources. It is estimated that 50 million to 85 million people lost their lives before Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan were defeated in During the war, more than 16 million men and women served in the United States Armed Forces, however fewer than 1 million U.S. World War II veterans survive today. WWII Heritage Days is a living history classroom, said Jim Buckley, CAF Dixie Wing leader. More than 200 volunteers from 25 organizations join us in creating
the weekend. We turn our flying museum into a classroom to preserve and teach the story of The Greatest Generation, the men and women who won the Second World War. Saturday evening will bring back the Big Band sound at Keep em Flying, a 1940s theme hangar dance fundraiser featuring The Peachtree Jazz Edition. Proceeds from the dance help cover the cost of WWII Heritage Days, aircraft preservation and Education through Living History, the group s free WWII history program for schools and youth groups. The event draws World War II history enthusiasts to Peachtree City from throughout the southeast. Participating organizations include the Atlanta World War II Round Table, American Rosie the Riveters Association, Atlanta History Center, Kennesaw State University s Museum of History & Holocaust Education, Marine Corps League, Museum of Aviation, the U.S. Army Signal Corps Museum, 1st Infantry Division (reenacted), 134th IR134 "Hoch und Deutschmeister", Fiveoh-First, and Kelly s Zeroes. Local civic organizations and schools are invited to create and display 1940s exhibits. Suggested donation for WWII Heritage Days is $5. World War II veterans, active duty military in uniform and children 5 and under are admitted free. WWII Heritage Days will take place rain or shine. Please no pets. Tickets for Keep em Flying are $55 before April 19th, $60 at the door. Reserved tables and group discounts available. All ticket sales final.
