3 Carver-Hill Museum 895 McClelland Street Crestview, FL Hours of Operation: Mon Fri. 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Phone: The building that currently houses the museum was built in 1997 with funding sources from a variety of government, community and church organizations, as well as individual donations. The museum is the only one of its kind in Okaloosa County, which emphasizes black history. It serves as an archive for artifacts related to Carver-Hill School, such as photos, yearbooks and sports memorabilia, and also contains historical documents of local families and the community. The museum is also a site for many community events for the city. The Carver-Hill May Day Festival and Museum Day is a great memorial event for the museum. Families can compete in amateur sports competitions or just relax and enjoy the food and drink provided. Besides museum tours, the event has a large community parade through the area. It is a celebratory and reflective day for this great institution in Crestview. Carver-Hill Memorial and Historical Society, Inc. Crestview, FL. 4 Make Use of our Research Library Resources Family Heritage Wall of Honor Inductees: Annie Carroll Jackson 2013 Annie Carroll Jackson was one of seven children born to Willie and Eva Ousley. She was a lifelong resident of Okaloosa County. Although she had an eighth grade education, she was an effective entrepreneur in Crestview for many years. She was very business savvy. She had two and three jobs all of my life, doing it all with excellence. She instilled in us that if you want something in life you got to work hard for it because there is nothing free in this world, and that one is going to give you anything. She was amazing in that she raised 12 great grandchildren, over a hundred grand and great grandchildren, and she knew all of them. By DeLois Jackson (BIO/FHWOH Research Binder) Velma Jones Conyers 2012 She cooked for the Carver Hill School lunchroom. The Eastern Star Chapter in Crestview was renamed in her honor in She is a Deaconess at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church. Velma Conyers, is a past worthy matron of the Eastern Star chapter that now bears her name was in attendance James R.L. Conyers, for whom the lodge is named, was her late husband. Mrs. Conyers had this to say, The Lord has kept me all these 90-some years and I m glad to be here, she said. I m so proud this day has come. I ve been belonging to this chapter ever since I was 18 years old. Our area has a rich African-American history. The following topics are a great resource for school reports and presentations. Learn about them on the website referenced above. There is additional information in the Research Library, too.
