2 Welcome to Holliday Park One of Indianapolis oldest parks, Holliday Park is among the most environmentally diverse, yet accessible, tracts of land within Marion County. The park is located along the banks of the White River and has 95 acres of woodland and over three miles of trails. As a major urban resource, it features a 13,000 square foot nature center with rental spaces, arboretum, prairie, ornamental and native gardens, playground, rock garden, and picnic areas. Holliday Park is host to over 30 community and educational groups that use the nature center throughout the year. Thirty thousand participants annually attend Holliday Park s environmental education programs and events. Program Registration Information Program registration begins Monday, October 27, Call or visit to register. Fees due upon registration. Exciting News!!! As part of the Friends of Holliday Park s A Priceless Asset in Need capital campaign, the exhibit hall in the nature center will be closed this winter for a much needed renovation. You can still stop by the nature center to visit some of the animals or join us for a one of our great winter programs. It s not too late to support this project, visit for updates and to learn more about how you can give. Dont forget to check out what is new in the spring! 3

4 Youth and Family Programs Hunt of the Month Stop by the front desk of the nature center to grab a copy of our monthly scavenger hunt. Then put on your detective hat and head out into the park to see what you can find! Daily. Mon. Sat. 9:00 am-5:00 pm Sun. 1:00-5:00 pm Family Friday Night Campfire Tired of spending your Friday night in front of the TV? Come share in a fun adventure for the whole family. We will start around the campfire and then focus on the topic of the evening. We will provide the roasting sticks and s mores, you are welcome to bring hot dogs and make a meal of it! Friday, Dec. 12: Winter Hike (224179) 6:30-8:00 pm $5/person, pre-registration required Create and Decorate: Treats for the Birds Winter makes it hard for birds to find food. Come anytime between 1:30-3:00 to create treats you can hang outside to feed birds in your backyard. We will provide all materials and decorations. Sunday, Dec. 14 (224181) 1:30-3:00 pm $5/person, pre-registration required Winter Solstice Wonders Happy first day of winter! Come join a naturalist as we discover the amazing things that happen in nature on the shortest day of the year. Engage in fun activities and go for a winter hike. 5 Youth and Family Programs Create and Decorate: Terrariums Winter got you down? Need a little green in your life? Come make a table top terrarium! These fun and easy terrariums are sure to brighten your day and convince you spring is on its way! We will provide all materials and plants. Sunday, Jan. 11 (224919) 1:30-3:00 pm $8/person, pre-registration required Small Wonders Explore the natural world through fun and creative activities and hikes. Hands-on experiences designed for children and their caregiver offer a chance to discover nature together. This is a parent/child class for ages 3 and 4. Tuesday, Feb. 10, Frogs and Toads (224193) 9:30-10:30 am $5/child,pre-registration required Backyard Bird Count The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual event that uses citizen science to count birds. Join us to add to the data! Spend some time in our wildlife observation area watching different birds come and go and take a leisurely hike through the forest in search of winter birds. 6 Youth and Family Programs Homeschool Nature Day Bundle up and bring your homeschooler to Holliday Park for a day of outdoor learning. Students will learn about reptiles and amphibians, practice bird ID, and discover how maple syrup is made. Hands-on activities will provide students the opportunity to learn though discovery. Participants will be assigned to groups and rotate through three classes. More information will be mailed prior to class. Ages Thursday, Feb. 19 (224191) 10:00 am-2:00 pm $10/child, pre-registration required Webelos Badge Blitz During our annual badge blitz, Webelos will enjoy earning the three activity badges for the World Conservation Award. Packs are welcome and must be accompanied by at least one adult. Come prepared to be indoors and out. Saturday, Feb. 21 (224183) 8:30 am-12:00 pm Scouts $10/ Adults $4, lunch provided, pre-registration required Brownie Girl Scout Winter Fun Day Come spend the afternoon around the campfire and exploring the woods Girls will start by cooking lunch over the campfire, then learn about making maple syrup and take a winter hike. Brownies will earn and receive a Maple Syrup Patch as well as a Winter Fun Patch. Come prepared to be indoors and out. Join us anytime between 12:30 and 2:30 to journey around the trails and learn all about maple sugaring, try a taste test and enjoy the gooey sweetness of a Sugar Maker s Sundae (trust us, you ll love it!) 8 Adult Programs Thoreau and Walden at Holliday Park This series examines the deeper aspects of Henry David Thoreau s Walden and it explores its significance for today s rapidly changing world. Written over 150 years ago, this powerful statement about the environment, society and the spiritual world still continues to challenge us today. Tom Potter, immediate Past-President of the International Thoreau Society, will be guiding our review of this and other of Thoreau s works. Tom regularly lectures at Concord and elsewhere around the country on Thoreau s works and message. Tuesdays: Dec. 2 and 16, Jan. 6 and 20, Feb. 3 and 17 10:00-11:30 am Free, No registration required Volunteer Naturalist Trainings If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity and enjoy sharing your love of the outdoors with others, then this is the place for you. 9 Adult Programs Amos W. Butler Audubon Society Named after one of Indiana s greatest naturalists, the Amos W. Butler chapter of the National Audubon Society is a grassroots organization that promotes the enjoyment and stewardship of birds in central Indiana. The public is invited to join each monthly program. For more information, visit www. amosbutleraudubon.org Tuesdays: Dec. 9- Two Months in a Tropical Rainforest Jan. 13- Galapagos Islands Feb. 10- Inside Indy Nature Preserves 7:30-9:00 pm Natural History Book Club Bookstores have natural history books galore with authors from Rachel Carson to Aldo Leopold. This monthly program offers adults a chance to learn about nature through the words of nature writers. Contact Holliday Park for selected readings. 10 Adult Programs Hoosier Herpetological Society The Hoosier Herpetological Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the education of its members and the conservation of all reptiles and amphibians. All programs are open to the public, families are welcome. Visit for more information. Wednesdays: Jan. 21 and Feb. 18 7:00-9:00 pm Central Indiana Wilderness Club Founded in 1982, Central Indiana Wilderness Club is a nonprofit volunteerrun club organized for the purpose of providing education and affordable wilderness adventures. 11 The Friends of Holliday Park About The Friends of Holliday Park: Friends of Holliday Park (FHP) was formed in 1991 and is an independent 501(c)(3) public charity committed to preserving and improving Holliday Park. To that end, FHP initially raised approximately $400,000 to install the playground. FHP then raised approximately $4.8 million to construct, endow, and donate to the city, the Nature Center, which opened to the public in FHP works closely with Indy Parks to support and maintain many aspects of the Park, including sponsorship of the free summer concert series, restoration of the rock garden, regular trail renovations, and support of environmental education programs. FHP s current $3.2 million capital campaign seeks to renovate The Ruins and The Exhibit Hall. To learn more about these exciting projects, and to donate, please visit Photo by Casey Cronin.
