1 Est The purpose of this organization is to develop, promote the proper breeding, humane treatment, and care of birds of all kinds and varieties. To reproduce, exchange, publish and distribute information on aviculture which will tend to increase the knowledge of its members. To cooperate with other organizations and governmental agencies toward the establishment of practices for improved breeding, handling and treatment of all birds. President s Message Hello bird enthusiasts! Last month was our Mini-Bird Mart and I hope all that participated did well. It seemed to me that we had a very good turn out. Lara Maddox will be our speaker this month. She breeds and hand raises quite a few birds. She also has a table at our bird marts. So please come and enjoy a very interesting presentation. Next month our speaker will be Andrea Cibibi who has the following topics that we need to choose 2 of: 1. Artificial Insemination and sperm cryopreservation for bird breeders. 2. Tube feeding and treating sick birds 3. How to repair small damaged eggs and assist with hatching 4. Bird parasite identification and treatment 5. Influencing fertility and sex ratios in bird collections. Please think about which topic you d be interested in! This year is going by so fast. I can t believe it s September and heading into fall with cooler weather on the horizon. Thank goodness! Hope to see you at our meeting, Terry There will be a regular meeting on November 12 at the Ag Center. Last details of the show and mart will be discussed. Election of 2018 Officers. This is a bring food and prizes meeting! We will be having a PRE-meeting concerning the bird show. It will be from 12:30 to 1:00 and is especially designed for those who are already working on the bird show in some capacity but anyone who would like to come to this meeting is wecome. Thank you, Sharon

2 September Speaker Lara Maddox Club Member Cockatiel Breeding Lara is a long time breeder of cockatiels and will talk about pairing for color, hand feeding and her breeding practices. Lara has been a member for several years and she and her friend often dress up in 1920 s clothing for everyone s entertainment. She s knowledgeable, interesting and she will be bringing some of her birds for her presentation. We look forward to having you, Lara. Andrew Griffith, August 18 th, 2017 I had every intention of writing about how well my spring & summer Society Finch breeding program was going and how well my birds did in the Rare Division of The West Coast Zebra and Society Finch Show up in Sacramento (You just should have been there!), even though my Red-Brown 2017 hen came in second place to a purchased (gasp!) bird. BTW She also won Best Unflighted in the same division. In short, I entered 7 birds in this division and 6 ended up on the Top Bench, or the top 10. Read about the carnage that happened to these beautiful birds in the What s Happening in Your Aviary. MEMBERS - Remember to bring raffle prizes! This is one of our favorite parts of the meetings. Barbara Milgrom Raffle Manager

3 What s Happening in Your Aviary This Month Drew The story of the scourge; the sly and hated Raccoon. Please do not fall for that goopy looking little masked bandit that delights the children. Don t give in to your children s pleas of Can we keep him? They are truly evil! Last week we had a visit from this masked bandit with three smaller minions in tow. No one heard the commotion and the carnage later that night. It was like Freddy Krueger tormenting the Society Finches of Willowood Drive. The next morning the air was brisk and cool. It s going to be a fabulous day crap quickly changed as my trusty dog, Missy sniffed around one of the lower cages on the end rack. I noticed one cage was all askew. A bloody footprint was the calling card of that dreaded animal. Half a family of birds were missing. As I looked closer I saw that only the bodies were truly missing their heads and the upper portion of their spines were still in the cage. And of course it was my cage of prize-winning Red-Browns and their babies. The largest head was that of my hen and the smaller heads were two of the five chicks. I had only one breeding pair that I got last year from Puerto Rico. I sincerely hope that at least one of the 3 remaining fledglings is a hen, but since they hatched out in early July, one of the hottest on record, they will no doubt all be cocks. Knowing that I had a clutch full of prize-winning fledgling Red-Browns at home I recently sold all my 2016 & 17 youngster Red-Browns. I ordered a chicken and an egg from Amazon. I ll let you know.

4 Chloe Sanctuary for Parrots and Cockatoos Our club has decided to make a donation to Chloe Sanctuary in Fallbrook, California. I thought you would like to know what they say about their sanctuary. The Chloe Sanctuary is a scientifically based environment where abused and damaged parrots and cockatoos are healed and given sanctuary, volunteers and caretakers are trained, and the public made aware of these exceptional creatures. Using hands-on education and lectures, seminars, and events, we share our knowledge and love for these wild animals. We are particularly concerned with the humans who come to us with their birds. These people are often close to mental breakdown. They never dreamt that the sweet-looking bird they brought home would turn them into awful, spiteful people who throw things at cages and yell at the top of their voices. They hate what they have become. We strive to make these people understand these large birds and see what they can become with love and understanding. We use donated funds primarily for veterinary exams or critical procedures, medicine, food, enrichment items, cages, perches, and flight harnesses. Veterinary bills average around $3000 to $5000 a year. Your donation will help us to give proper medical care, food and enrichment items for those in need as we heal spirits and prepare them for a life among humans. Thank you! Submitted by Sharon
