The Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands is looking for a Building Project Manager who is not afraid of rolling up their sleeves and helping out on the tools; someone who can mentor and assist the shire s newly formed building team during a period of increased building activity. Ideally you will be a registered builder who has experience supervising building projects in remote locations. You will have excellent problem solving and forward planning skills and can bring new ideas and improve the way we currently build. A qualification in another trade would be highly regarded. 6 Cocos (Keeling) Islands News (cont d) Berita Pulu Cocos (Keeling) (seterusnya) COMMUNITY FUNDING PROGRAM - EVENTS & FESTIVALS The Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands is calling on interested applicants for our Community Events & Festivals Grant A maximum of $2,000 per applicant is available to non-profit entities and / or community groups located within the Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands for activities which will provide benefits to this community. In exceptional circumstances a grant higher than $2,000 may be awarded. Funding is available for events or festivals to be held within the 2017 Calendar Year. This round of funding is the only opportunity to request and receive funds for events or festivals during 2017 as Shire will not consider any requests made outside of this funding round. Applications are now open and are required to be submitted no later than 4pm on Monday 5th December Successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified by 30th December Applications will only be accepted on standard application forms which can be obtained from our Shire Offices. TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE In accordance with section 3.50 of the Local Government Act 1995 (WA) (CKI) notice is hereby given of the temporary road closure of the back laneway behind House 47 Home Island. The road closure will remain in place from the 12 th November until the 31 st December and is for an upcoming wedding. As individuals, there are so many things we can do to reduce our water consumption and save cash in the process too! Here are some brief and simple tips most of us can apply: Shorter showers with less pressure Install a water saving shower head under $10 Ensuring taps, water pipes and hose connections don t drip Checking toilets for leaks. Use a few drops of food coloring in the cistern, wait for a while and check the bowl for signs of color be sure to flush afterwards prevent staining. Buy clothing made with fibres that aren t so water intensive; such as hemp Installing rainwater tanks or even just a small rain barrel Using greywater from sinks and washing machines to water the garden Installing tap aerators Turning off the tap while brushing our teeth Turning off the tap while shaving Washing veggies in a sink partially filled with water instead of under a running tap Setting washing machines at the lowest possible water level for the load Watering gardens just after sunrise or just after sunset to reduce evaporation Mulching gardens to reduce watering requirements Installing drip irrigation systems Cutting grass a little longer during summer Reducing the temperature of water heaters which lessens the amount of mixing needed to be done in order to achieve a temperature that won t scald your skin Installing dual flush toilets or displacement devices in cisterns Fill a dishwasher completely before running it Don t use water to accelerate thawing of food Instead of using a sink rubbish disposal unit, establish a compost pile or worm farm Use drought tolerant plants in your garden and drought resistant grass for lawn Never use a hose to blast leaves or litter off a driveway sweep it, it s good exercise too :) More tips in next edition... Last year we came close to raising nearly $8000 which was amazing. Healthy Living Tips The brain is like a muscle if you don t give it a regular workout, it loses tone. Here are some tips to help you improve your mental fitness: Exercise for 30 minutes every day. Physical exercise delivers oxygen to the brain. This can help to improve your memory, reasoning abilities and reaction times. Read often and read widely. Keeping an active interest in the world around you will help to exercise your brain and improve your mental fitness. Boost your levels of vitamin B. Eat plenty of wholegrain cereals, leafy greens and dairy foods. Vitamin B is essential to brain health. Challenge your intellect and memory. Stretch yourself mentally by learning a new language, doing the cryptic crossword or playing chess. This is important for brain health and good for your social life. Take time to relax. Excess stress hormones like cortisol can be harmful to the brain. Schedule regular periods of relaxation into your week. Take up a new hobby. Learning something new gives the grey matter a workout and builds neural pathways in the brain. Actively manage your health. Conditions such as diabetes or heart disease can affect mental performance if not diagnosed and treated. Have regular check-ups with your doctor to prevent future problems. 16 Public No ces No s-no s Umum Survey Kesihatan Binatang Ayam dan Kambing November Doktor-doktor Binatang daripada Department of Agriculture and Water Resources di Canberra akan melawat Pulu Cocos dari 22-25hb November. Doktor-doktor binatang ini merancangkan untuk berjumpa dengan memba-mamba daripada Cocos Shire Council dan orang-orang yang memelihara binatang di Kampong dan Pulu Panjang untuk membincangkan kesihatan ayam-ayam dan kambing. Dengan keizinan daripada pemiliknya, kumpulan vet ini merancangkan untuk memeriksa berberapa binatang-binatang tersebut untuk mengambil sampel darah dan najis untuk pemeriksaan di lab. Survey kesihatan ini akan fokus dengan penyakit-penyakit binatang yang kami rasa belom ada di Pulu Cocos. Kami berharap untuk menggunakan survey ini untuk lebih memahami keadaan kesihatan binatang dan ayam-ayam di Pulu Cocos dimasa sekarang ini, dan menjawab segala persoalan yang masyarakat mungkin ada berkenaan pengurusan mereka dan pemeliharaannya. Kami sangat menunggukan untuk berjumpa dan bekerjasama dengan saudara-saudari dan untuk mendengarkan banyak lagi berkenaan pemeliharaan binatang di Pulu Cocos. Not only was it wildflower season but also the birds are nesting and the many animals are out and about. We will be doing it again next year. The frog is the western Australian spotted frog and he lives in the forest and only comes out at night.. The slow looking bird is a Stone Curlew and does not fly. And the furry animal is a Numbat and is the western Aussie emblem. Page 16
