There s invitations, decorations, gifts, travel, clothing and the list goes on. Many of the items used at a wedding are only used once. Invitations and paper Use recycled paper wherever possible for wedding invitations; most companies can offer this option. Also consider treeless paper made from materials such as bamboo, hemp and kenaf. Even the type of ink used for the invitation should be taken into account as some inks can be toxic. Venue and Travel When selecting a venue, also consider where your guests will be travelling from. Try and find a middle point if possible. The less your guest have to travel, the cheaper for them and the less oil consumed. Cutlery and crockery Disposable plates, cups, napkins and cutlery can create masses of waste at large wedding receptions. Consider hiring nondisposable cutlery and crockery instead. If that s not viable, try to use recycled paper products or treeless disposable crockery options such as bamboo. Wedding dresses and clothing If you have no desire to keep the dress after the wedding, donate it to a charity who can sell it, creating funds for them and perhaps saving someone else from needing to purchase a new dress. For anxiety management visit: Drug offences and you VIII Commonwealth drug offences trafficking illegal drugs These are short articles about legal issues that may interest you. They are not legal advice. You should always get individual legal advice for your situation. This is the eighth article about drug offences under state-based legislation that is applied to Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands and under Commonwealth legislation. This is the fourth article about Commonwealth drug offences that is, offences under Commonwealth legislation. It is about trafficking offences associated with illegal drugs (these are called controlled drugs ). The Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth) (we will call it the Criminal Code (Cth)) and the Criminal Code Regulations 2002 (Cth) (we will call them the Regulations) deal with Commonwealth drug offences. What is a controlled drug? The Criminal Code (Cth) defines a controlled drug as one listed as such by a regulation, or an analogue (which means another similar form) of the drug or one that is urgently determined by the Minister to be a controlled drug. The Regulations contain a schedule listing them. Examples include heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, amphetamine and metamphetamine, among others. The definition does not include growing plants. What is trafficking? You traffic in a controlled drug if you: sell it possess it with the intention of selling it prepare it for supply, or transport it with the intention of selling it or believing that someone else intends to sell any of it guard or hide it with the intention of selling it or assisting someone else to sell any of it. So, holding onto the controlled drug with the intention of selling it in the future is trafficking. Packaging it into separate amounts, such as baggies, ready to sell is preparing the drug for supply. Burying the drug in your backyard until you are ready to sell is hiding it with the intention of selling. When you can be presumed to be trafficking If you have a certain amount or more of any controlled drug (called a trafficable quantity), or you have done certain things with a trafficable quantity (such as transported it, or prepared it for supply) you can be presumed to be intending either to sell it or to believe that someone else will do so, just because of the large amount that you have. You can rebut (cancel) the presumption if you can prove that you did not have that intention or belief. The standard of proof is just on the balance of probabilities, which means just greater than 50 percent, or more likely than not. The trafficable quantity for each drug is set out in the schedule in the Regulations that lists controlled drugs and is measured in grams. Examples are 2 grams of amphetamine, 1.5 grams of morphine and grams of lysergide (LSD). Marketable and commercial amounts of controlled drugs In general terms, you can be charged with trafficking the controlled drug (the least serious charge), or trafficking a marketable quantity of the controlled drug (a more serious charge) or trafficking a commercial quantity of the controlled drug (the most serious charge). The schedule that lists controlled drugs also set out the amounts that constitute marketable and commercial quantities of each drug. A marketable quantity is usually measured in grams. Some examples are if you have 250 grams or more of amphetamine, cocaine or heroin or 500 or more grams of ketamine. A commercial quantity is usually measured in kilograms. Some examples are if you have 1.5 kgs or more of heroin, or 0.75 kgs or more of amphetamine or 2 kgs or more of cocaine. Trafficking controlled drugs the offences If you traffic a controlled drug you commit an offence. The maximum penalty is 10 years imprisonment or 2,000 penalty units (a penalty unit (PU) is currently $210) or both. This offence can be dealt with by a Magistrates Court if both the accused person and the prosecution agree to do so. If you traffic a marketable quantity of a controlled drug you commit an offence. The maximum penalty is 25 years imprisonment or 5,000 PUs or both. This offence is indictable only. This means that it can only be dealt with by the District Court and not by the Magistrates Court. If you traffic a commercial quantity of a controlled drug you have commit an offence. The maximum penalty is imprisonment for life or 7,500 PUs or both. This offence is indictable only and can only be dealt with by the Supreme Court, and not by the District Court, because the maximum penalty is life imprisonment. With all of the offences mentioned in this article, you can also be found guilty of the offence if you are reckless (which means careless or unthinking) as to whether what you are trafficking is a controlled drug or not.
