The proposal is for up to 10 freestanding self-contained 1 2 person pondoks, up to 6 luxury pondoks with lounge, kitchen and a second bathroom that can accommodation up to 4 persons each and up to 10 eco-tents for up to 2 persons each. In addition to the accommodation, the proposal includes a licensed restaurant, swimming pool, nursery, fulltime onsite managers accommodation and resort operations which includes the reception, office, housekeeping storage, prayer room and employee overnight accommodation for guest support. The proposal outlines a number of employment opportunities including: reception; meet and greet; customer service; kitchen and restaurant; spa treatments; gardening; cleaning; sharing Cocos history and skipper. You could become a plumber and triple your salary. Just make sure you say you only made it to 6th grade, they don't like educated people." The professor takes him up on the offer and becomes a plumber. His salary triples and he doesn't have to work nearly as hard. But the company makes an announcement that all of their plumbers must get a 7th grade education. So they all go to night school. The teacher wants to gauge the class so he asks John, "What is the formula for the area of a circle?" John walks up to the board and is about to write the formula when he realizes he has forgotten it. So he begins to attempt to derive the formula, filling the board with complicated mathematics. He ends up figuring out it is negative pi times radius squared. He thinks the minus doesn't belong so he starts over, but again he comes up with the same equation. After staring at the board for a minute he looks out at the other plumbers and sees that they are all whispering, "Switch the limits on the integral!" Page 6

Afternoon tea on West Island of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands at the Tropika Café from 4.30pm to 5.30pm on Wednesday 8 March. Please come along for a cup of tea or a cold drink, and take advantage of the opportunity to meet with the Minister. If you go down to South Island 3 hours after low tide and walk around on the sand flats you will see many different shore birds wading around. This year we have a Eurasian Curlew, the large billed bird in the photo. These birds are super rare in Australia with one seen in Broome and another in Bunbury. As you can see it is hanging out with a gang of smaller birds with long bills who are Whimbrels. There are 70 Whimbrels on South Island and they come here every year from October to April. April is when all these waders fly off to Russia to breed in the melted Tundra which becomes a soggy mass of bugs during our winter. Geof Christie Cocos (Keeling) Islands News from Geof s Bird s Nest Plastics that end up as ocean debris contribute to habitat destruction and entangle and kill tens of thousands of marine animals each year. To limit your impact, carry a reusable water bottle, store food in non disposable containers, bring your own cloth tote or other reusable bag when shopping, and recycle whenever possible. Help Take Care of the Beach Whether you enjoy diving, surfing, or relaxing on the beach, always clean up after yourself. Explore and appreciate the ocean without interfering with wildlife or removing rocks and coral. Go even further by encouraging others to respect the marine environment or by participating in local beach cleanups. Influence Change in Your Community Research the ocean policies of public officials before you vote or contact your local representatives to let them know you support marine conservation projects. Consider patronizing restaurants and grocery stores that offer only sustainable seafood, and speak up about your concerns if you spot a threatened species on the menu or at the seafood counter. Travel the Ocean Responsibly Practice responsible boating, kayaking, and other recreational activities on the water. Never throw anything overboard, and be aware of marine life in the waters around you. 8 Public No ces No s-no s Umum CURRENT GONG GONG ACOUSTIC TAGGING RESEARCH As part of our ongoing commitment to the sustainable management of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands fish and marine invertebrate stocks, the Department of Fisheries WA, is studying the habitat associations and movement of Gong Gong (Lambis lambis). This study involves tagging 20 Gong Gong with acoustic transmitters and tracking their movement over a 12 month period using an array of acoustic receivers (listening stations). In February the Department installed 40 acoustic receivers in an area south of Home Island on the eastern side of the lagoon. The area and location of the receivers was finalised in discussion with the Cocos-Malay community and their involvement is very much appreciated. Each receiver is marked by a reflective surface float and will be in place until approximately February The Department will come back and talk to the community about the results of the project in The Department is asking the community to be careful boating in the area of the receivers, so as not to damage them. For further information or to report a boat strike with the equipment please contact Scott Evans on (08) or scott.evans@fish.wa.gov.au Actual study area with acoustic receiver locations (yellow dots) IMPORTANT For accurate data collection, it is very important that the acoustic receivers and tagged Gong Gong are not moved or interfered with for the duration of the study. If a tagged Gong Gong is found by fishers, we kindly request it be returned to the water where caught. Penyelidikkan ini akan melibatkan meletak tag kepada 20 Gong Gong dengan acoustic transmitters dikawasan selatan dari Home Island disebelah utara lagoon. Trees remove pollution from the air, making it healthier for us to take into our lungs. Air pollution can create some major health problems. Highly polluted air has been shown to cause a burning effect in eyes, noses and throats. Polluted air also makes it harder for those with asthma to breathe. Some toxic chemicals that can live in the air -- like benzene and vinyl chloride -- are highly toxic. They can even cause cancer, birth defects, long term injury to the lungs, as well as brain and nerve damage. Breathing fresh air that plants produce lowers the chances of coming into contact with these scary pollutants. It can boost your immune system. The smells in fresh air bust stress and increase happiness. Even walking through a park or your own backyard can help you feel calmer and happier when you catch a whiff of freshly cut grass. And while rain may put a damper on your outdoor plans, we love nothing more than the scent of a downpour, according to Smithsonian magazine. The smell reminds us of the color green and may be linked with the growth of both the plants and animals that we need to eat, which could explain why it smells so good to us.
