3 OUR OUTDOOR IS OPEN Right around the corner, close at hand and at heart, you will find parks where you can remember what it s like to take your time. To spend crisp, cool, fall afternoons kicking dried leaves along a woodland trail. To breathe in the heady scent of prairie grasses as they glisten like gold in the morning sun. To marvel at the yellows and oranges and reds and indigos of the autumn palette. Right around the corner are places to learn about migrating birds and monarch butterflies, about mammals getting ready to hibernate, about fossils and about birds of prey. There are places to set up those final picnics of the waning year, or to sit down and paint a red-hued sunset. Most importantly, there are places right around the corner to be with your kids, your family, as you make memories that will stay with you as everyone heads off into their busy fall days. Make the time. Our outdoor is open to you. 1

9 BIOBLITZ AT DEER HAVEN PARK Bioblitzes are intense periods of biological surveying in which we record all types of living species within a designated area. At this bioblitz, participants of all skill levels can contribute by submitting photos for identification through inaturalist, a citizen science app that is often used to help identify and document species at bioblitz events. Queensnake We have made some interesting discoveries within the park district during recent events. A 2014 bioblitz uncovered a Species of Concern in Ohio, the Queensnake (Regina septemvittata), on property new to the park district along the Olentangy River. During that same event, volunteers identified more than 500 individual species, including more than 200 species of plants, 100-plus species of insects, and more than 40 species of spiders. Results from past bioblitzes can be found on our website, but the importance of bioblitzes for the park district goes beyond generating species lists. They serve as an invitation for people to explore the park beyond its trails, meet like-minded people, and see and learn about species that are often otherwise overlooked. Deer Haven Park has a variety of habitats to explore, including wetlands, streams, prairie fields, and woodland. Whether you have a PhD or just love to spend time outdoors, we hope you will join us for this year s event. Join us noon-9 p.m., Sept. 7 and 8 a.m.-noon, Sept. 8 at Deer Haven Park, 4183 Liberty Road, Delaware; registration is not required. In addition to conducting the bioblitz, we ve scheduled a number of educational activities. Here is a sampling; please visit the Sept. 7 listing on the events calendar on our website for times and more programs.
