Information for sponsors Society of Computer Science and Mechanics Enthusiasts Continuum Instytut Informatyki ul. Fryderyka Joliot-Curie 15, room Wrocław Team advisor: dr Marek Materzok tel Team lead: Cezary Siwek tel Marketing, finances: Celina Pawlińska tel
Who are we? We are a student team at the University of Wrocław, gathering enthusiasts of computer science, mechanics and electronics. Among our members are students of UWr (computer science, geology, political science), other universities from Wrocław and even college students. Our project is supervised and supported by the Institute of Computer Science of University of Wrocław (
What do we do? The main project of the Continuum team is Aleph 1 an experimental martian rover of our own design. The aim of this work is to test new technologies and explore new ideas, which could be used in actual space missions or other tasks requiring the assistance of robots (sapper robots, autonomous vehicles, etc.). The competitions of Martian rovers are organized in order to compare efficiency of solutions proposed by many student teams. Such events are tests for rovers, which are used for variety of tasks in short time limit.
Competition tasks Assistance Task This task demonstrates the ability of the rover to help an astronaut working in the field. Typically, the goal is to transport objects (like a hammer or a first aid kit), and to operate simple tools (e.g. setting the hook). The task demands a lot of precision and dexterity from the rover s manipulator. Equipment Servicing Task This is a task which demonstrates the rover s capabilities in terms of operating various devices and their possible repair. During the task, the rover measures the voltage in the socket, connects power plugs, opens valves, precisely sets a knob of some measuring equipment and reads values of various displays. The required level of performance is very similar to that of sapper robots. We can proudly say that our rover s manipulator is one of the best among the machines involved in the competition. At the last year s European Rover Challenge we received a special prize for the best performance in this task. Terrain Traversal The purpose of this task is to present the capabilities of the rover s drivetrain system and to present its effectiveness in traversing difficult terrain. One of the variants of this task blind traversal (ERC 2016) requires driving along a fixed route without using cameras. This task allowed us to test our image recognition algorithms and navigation in the field. Often it is required to drive autonomously the control from the base station is turned off, and the machine itself makes decisions based only on indications from its own sensors. Science Task During this task, the rover must take a number of samples of scientific value (regolith and rock) and drill to a given depth to take a core sample. Other parts of the task consist of taking measurements of terrain, atmosphere and surface properties. The rover is able to perform basic measurements on the collected samples (to determine their size, weight and ph). After returning the machine to the base, the team performs additional tests on the samples (to determine the mineralogical composition, microscopic analysis, sedimentological analysis, quallitative analysis detecting elements, ninhydrin analysis detection of amino acids and others). The team writes a report of their analysis trying to draw conclusions about the studied area, bedrock, useful materials, elements or try to determine whether there exists the possibility of life.
Our awards Fourth place European Rover Challenge 2016 Third place University Rover Challenge 2016 (USA) Sixth place European Rover Challenge 2015 Our plans Taking part in URC (University Rover Challenge) in the US. The hallenge is organised for student teams from all over the world. Their task is to design and build a Martian rover and then compete with other teams in four tasks which simulate Martian missions. The challenge is taking place on a desert in Utah, near the analogue Martian base MDRS (The Mars Desert Research Station). The URC is organised by The Mars Society.
Our presentation We are present on many events related to space exploration, computer science and robotics: Student societies fair, CWINT Open Days Astroshow, Lectures in a variety of institutions (University of Wroclaw, Wroclavian Society of Astronomy Enthusiasts etc.). We are promoting computer science and robotics among children and young people: We are organizing shows for schools, We are organizing shows for the open days of the Computer Science Institute, We are organizing shows for the Lower Silesian Science Festival. We had 800 visitors! We are taking part in popular science conferences: ZOSIA (Winter Camp of Computer Science Students) org/, TEDx We in the Internet Our website: Our Facebook profile: Movie for ERC: Movie for URC: Critical Design Review for URC:
Why are we looking for sponsorships? Because of our modest budget our rover used cheap parts like: sling balls, toy minivan wheels, sandwich containers, glass tube from thermometer, asg laser, bicycle battery. Additional funds would allow us to use better technologies and materials like carbon fiber or 3d printing. We need money for: travelling to US on URC (about PLN), travelling to UK on UKURC (about PLN), better manipulator parts (engines, carbon fiber) (about PLN), materials for 3d printing, wheels engines, additional sensors (laser rangefinder, Kinect, RTK capable GPS), better parts and tools.
What do we offer? Possibility of supporting young Polish engineers and popularization of computer science and robotics among children and young people. Possibility of placing your company logotype on our rover, equipment and t-shirts. Promoting your company on our Facebook profile (reach: about 3000 people) Placing your company s logotype in our promotional flyers, movies, photos. Great media image we are appearing in the TV and the radio. You could use our media image, photos for your company marketing. Possibility of presentation our rover with oral speech in any place where you would like us to do it.
