4 Course Objectives Introduce students to systems engineering in a somewhat realistic design and review experience Familiarize students with technical issues concerning spacecraft mission design Introduce non-technical drivers (cost, safety, public policy ) Acquaint students with the formal design process, including: Conceptual/preliminary design Evaluation and assessment Spacecraft component design Teach students about performing trade studies and about the appropriate use of modeling and analysis for preliminary spacecraft design Emphasize communication skills (written and oral) in the technical arena 12/12/2006 4
5 Schedule Phase I (3-4 weeks): Lectures on space systems Each student is a member of a 6 person team Group homework assignments with presentations Phase II (3 weeks): Preliminary design phase Phase I teams remain in place through PDR Phase III (remainder): Critical design phase Phase I/II teams disband Base design selected Each student placed in component/management team 12/12/2006 5
