Voyage to Mars Space Simulation

Your class is divided into two crews Spacecraft Mars Control Perform experiments and send results to Mars Control Crew Record results, research analyze, and draw conclusions Track progress of SC crew

Voyage To Mars Storyline It s the future, the year is 2076 Trips from Earth to Mars are now routine A fresh crew of Astronauts are on their way to replace the team living on Mars The Mars Controllers must safely guide the Spacecraft to a safe landing After a crew exchange, the spacecraft prepares for liftoff and a return to Earth

Phase 1: Undock from Mothership Phase 2: Mars Orbit Insertion

Phase 3 Probe launch to Phobos

Phase 4 Land at Chryse Planitia Base Camp

Phase 5 Crew Change

Phase 6: Prepare for Liftoff

Phase 7: Probe launch to Deimos Phase 8: Re-dock with Mothership

SKILLS LEARNED Work together as a team Communicate clearly and effectively Think critically Make decisions Solve problems

Solving a Problem Example: Your cell is not working: 1. Identify Problem: Cell phone wont turn on 2. Brainstorm possible causes: dead battery, faulty charging cable, phone is damaged after falling 3. Make a prediction: If I charge the cell phone it should work again 4. Test your idea: After 3 hours of charging you turn on your cell phone but it does NOT work 5. Share your results. 6. Ask new questions: Did you charge it long enough? Is the charging cable damaged?

Mission Teams/Stations 4 Science Teams: Space Navigation, Probe, Remote, Weather 3 Support Teams: Life Support, Medical, Isolation 3 Correspondence Teams: Media, Data, Communication

NAV Navigation Teams Calculate trajectories Triangulate the spacecraft s position Safely enter Mars orbit Land the Spacecraft at Mars Control base Prepare for liftoff

Space Weather (SW) teams Look for large sunspots that could become Solar Flares and Coronal Mass Ejections (CME s) Track solar storms Investigate the impact of solar storm radiation on Mars and the Spacecraft crew

Probe Use headsets to: Communicate instructions for assembling a probe deploy probes to the Moons of Mars

Martian Moons-Demios & Phobos

REM Remote Teams Work in a Glovebox to compare, classify and analyze Earth and Mars minerals Look for similarities and differences between the two planets

ISO Three Isolation teams will Use robotic arms to: ISO 1: Measure volume and mass of hazardous chemicals ISO 2: Check solar panels for micro-meteoroid damage ISO 3: check Air Filters and Nuclear Rod for radiation

MED Medical Teams Monitor radiation levels on Mars and the Spacecraft Perform vision and hearing test Check respiration, skin temperature, and heart rate

LS Life Support Teams Monitor the spacecraft s environment Test the quality of recycled water Determine the best food crops to grow on Mars Monitor plants in the hydroponic garden

COM Communication Teams Responsible for sending and receiving all verbal messages

DATA Data Teams Send and receive all text messages Accurately type numbers and technical information

Media Write stories about the mission Interview teams Take photos and Videos of the mission using your own equipment Prepare an a post-flight article
