1 U.S. Space & Rocket Center Ultimate Field Trip (UFT) Labs Theme: Exploring the Solar System fall only - Lunar Landers Grades K-2 Overview: Students learn and review basic facts about the moon, and about the spacecraft that was used to get there. They also learn about the spacecraft currently being designed to return to deep space. Students learn about craters and how they are formed by creating two craters of their own in flour and comparing them. Students also create a landscape with Play-Doh and label the parts of the crater. 2 - Crater Creators Grades 6-8 Overview: Students discuss landing on the moon and reasons to continue exploring space. The lab studies the lunar landscape and how craters came to be on the moon and why they vary in size. Students study potential and kinetic energy by examining the size of an impactor and how its speed affects the size of a crater. 4 - PS 3, 4 - PS 3-4 MS - PS 2-1, MS - PS 2-2, MS - PS 2-4, MS- PS 2-5 MS - PS 3-1, MS-PS 3-2, MS - PS 3-5 Math 6.SP.1, 6.SP.2, 6.SP.3 7.SP.1, 7.SP.2, 6.EE.A.2 RST.6-8.3, RST.6-8.7, SL.8.1 SC.6.2, SC.6.4 SC.8.10 Theme: Rocketry Year Round - Propulsion Grades 9-12 Overview: Students are introduced to three things every rocket needs: fuels, guidance and recovery systems. Rockets and the Space Shuttle are compared while covering Newton s Laws as they relate to rocket launch and motion. Students work in pairs to create paper rockets that are launched on our air pressure launcher. HS - PS 2-1 ELA/Literacy: RST , RST L , L PS.3, PS.8, PS.11, PS.12 PHYS.5, PHYS.7 Theme: Living and Working in Space Year Round - The Right Stuff Grades K - 8 Overview - Students explore if they have the Right Stuff to become astronauts. Discussion includes education and personality traits of successful astronaut candidates, living and working in space and teamwork. Students work in teams to mix chemicals in a glove box just like astronauts to find the right combination of chemicals to make fuel to launch a rocket. 2
