Bill Tuchscherer gave the treasury report. The club is in good financial standing. Gene Bengel discussed our upcoming show: o Advised that we are behind on receiving carvings for the Friendship Cane. 4 and 6 blocks are available. Please pick one up and bring to March meeting. Don t forget this is a big ticket raffle item for the club. o Don t forget the raffle will need additional club donations. Note these items do not have to be a carving. o To date we only have 15 folks signed up for our show. We need more people. Please pass the word around and get folks to sign up. o Table Registration: " Early entries (by March 4) will receive a Free Club Patch and be on a Show Map.

3 Steve Lockhart and Rob Martin, representing the NE WI Woodworkers Guild from Green Bay, were introduced by Gene Bengel. Steve and Rob advised our club of the March 17/18 woodworking show their Club sponsors every year. We were cordially invited to attend. Betsy Popp handed out reference material and blocks to those who would be participating in her March carving seminar. Details below. Gene Bengel advised the members of a change in our Club s annual show site for next year (i.e.2019). o We are looking at the Civic Center in Oshkosh. o Date for the 2019 show will be Sunday, May 5. o The Board did the research on various locations and felt the best value was with the Civic Center. o More details will be passed on to the members as we confirm the details with the Civic Center. Library: o o o o Members are encouraged to check out reference material from the Club library. There is a wealth of books, study casts, drawings, etc. Only thing we ask is that you sign out what you take, and ensure it gets returned within a reasonable period of time (i.e. 2 months tops). A big thanks to both John and Jim Goheen for taking the lead as Club Librarians. Note: Whoever checked out the DVD on Sharpening, please make a note in the checkout log. 9 Chippers Club Classes - Features & Benefits Mid - Wis. Chippers Club sponsored and Board approved, carving classes commit to the artist-teacher that the club will make the agreed minimum enrollment. This commitment helps bring top caliber teachers to our club. Students benefit by planning their schedules with confidence. Early enrollment helps the instructor plan for the number of cutouts needed. The Club Board frequently offers a scholarship rebate to Chipper Club members in good standing who attend a scholarship authorized, club sponsored carving course. The scholarship amount is decided in advance by the Board for each authorized course. This is one of many club benefit

Chippers 44th Annual Woodcarving Show Date: April 29, 2018 at Crystal Falls Banquet Hall, New London, Wisconsin The Oldest Annual Woodcarving Show in the State of Wisconsin 2018 is our 44th Consecutive Year! 11 Two friendship cane raffle prizes are being constructed with your blocks. "Cane Omega" is an open category. The early returns are giving this cane star power! One block has Marilyn Monroe, Johnny Depp, John Wayne, and Elvis Presley. "Cane Alpha" has a theme: Fur, Fish, Feather, Flora. Choose one, two, three or all 4 for your block! These unique raffle prizes are a big fundraiser for the club! Your club appreciates each member's contribution to these friendship canes. Completed cane blocks should be turned in to William Tuscherer by March 4th so they may be assembled into the final canes. We love to see them at Show 'n Tell too, so don't be shy. If you haven't carved one before, try it. You can shape it so that it is round, polygonal, rectangular, varies from end to end, etc. Don't think that the block has to remain square on the ends. The Annual Krueger Hardware Carving Day - Saturday March 24, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Krueger True Value Hardware Store, 999 Winneconne Avenue, Neenah, Wisconsin. The 22nd Annual Musky Area Wood Carvers Workshop will be held August 14-17, 2018 in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin. The $60 registration fee includes a Tuesday Lasagna Dinner. Classes $55 each. Details and registration information: see carv-fest.com Open Carving : Kruegers True Value Hardware, 999 Winneconne Avenue, Neenah, Wisconsin Wednesdays, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. - Cost: Free. It is always fun to spend the day with fellow carvers and promote our club and the art of carving with all the people who walk through and ask questions. Oshkosh Seniors Center (OSC), North Building Woodshop, 200 North Campbell Road, Oshkosh, Wisconsin tel: (920) Tuesdays & Fridays: Noon - 2:30 p.m., and Wednesdays: 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Daily Fee for Woodshop open hours increased to: $1.50 residents, $2.25 non-residents. The Oshkosh Senior Center Woodshop is well equipped with bandsaws, scroll saws, vises, drill press, stationary sanders, finishing area, etc. Note: OSC open workshop hours can sometimes be noisy depending what type of equipment is being used, but hearing protection is available if needed. Fridays, 9:00 a.m. to noon - Cost: $2 daily fee. New carvers are welcome! We typically have about 6-12 carvers each Friday. 13 Woodcarving & Woodburning Classes : 4 week Carving Class with Lee Belanger - Fridays at St. Bernadette from 9 to noon. The first class was scheduled to begin on February 16th. The cost is $10 for the class plus $5 for materials. Contact Lee for details at This class is run at the same time as the St. Bernadette open carving. Betsy Popp March Woodcarving Class - Pair of Foxes Back to Back or an Otter on its back. A six day class - Thursday, Friday, and Saturday on March 1, 2, 3, and 8, 9, 10, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Bring your own lunch. Carving classes will be held at St. Marks Lutheran Church, 140 S. Green Bay Road, Neenah, Wisconsin. Enrollment is closed. Gene Bengel & Dick Christiansen Beginning Woodburning Project - Ducks & Bulrushes This beginning pyrography (woodburning art) project will have participants wood burn a plaque with a marsh scene of ducks and bulrushes. The class is open to anyone who would like to learn how to burn images on wood using modern variable temperature woodburners with several different designs of wire pen tips. A limited number of woodburners and pen tips are available for use in class. Cost covers wood. Basswood is available for purchase in the woodshop for other projects. 14 Gene Bengel Woodcarving Class - Open Project This carving class is open to anyone who would like to work on any carving, chipping or burning. Gene is available to assist with your project. Cost covers machine access. Wood available for purchase. This popular class always fills up fast! Mondays, March 5, 2018 to April 30, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Cost $20 for residents and $25 for non-residents; no daily user fee. The class size will be a maximum of 14. The last class filled up super-quick, so do not wait for the deadline. 19 Rules and Guidelines for the Mid-Wisconsin Wood Carving Show 2018 A carver may enter any one of the following classifications, but from then on cannot retreat to a lower classification. The classifications are: Under Open to any carver under the age of 18 and must be sponsored by a member of the Novice... Intermediate... Open... Master... For the beginning carver who has not won three (3) blue ribbons in any category. Best of Class or Best of Show at any competition. Carving from Rough-outs and class projects are allowed. For the more experienced carver who had developed skill beyond the novice level. Any carver who has won three (3) blue ribbons, Best of Class, or Best of show in this class must move up to Open Class. Carvings from rough-outs and class projects are allowed. Any carver may enter Open Class. Those who have moved up from the Intermediate Class compete in this class. A carver who has won three (3) blue ribbons in any category, Best of Class, or Best in Show in this class at any competition on must move up to the Master Class. This class is for carvers who have developed their skill beyond the Open Class. Master Carvers compete for Master Class ribbons and ultimately Best in Master Class. 1. All entries must be created and carved in wood. Pyrography may be on various media (wood, leather, gourds, etc. 2. You must have a display table to enter judging. Tables may be shared, but in order to enter judging, both entrants must pay the full table fee. 3. Carvings entered in judging may have been completed in previous years, but cannot have been entered in this show before. 4. All carvings entered in judging must have the date and carvers name burned or carved into the piece. 5. Rule change: You may enter 2 carvings in competition. They may be in the same category or different categories. 6. Best of Class winners will be chosen from the blue ribbon winners from all the categories in each class. (Best of Novice, Best of Intermediate, and Best of Open). 7. Best of Show will be selected from the Best of Class winners from the Novice, Intermediate, and Open classes. Blue ribbon winners in the Master categories compete for Best of Masters. 8. Ribbons from previous years or from other shows may not be displayed. 9. Exhibit tables are available on a first come basis to all carvers. Carvers may rent more than one table. Exhibitors must furnish their own covers and floor length table skirts. 10. Tables must be reserved by April 14. Late entries will be charged an additional $ Please observe show hours. No packing up before 4PM. If you carve at your table, please clean up your area. 12. Entries must be in the judging area between 7:AM and 8:AM so judging can start by 8:AM. 13. If you sell carvings, you are responsible for collecting sales tax. Judging Categories 1. Waterfowl 2.
