Remember to bring a carving for Show and Tell. Do you have carvings or related things that you would like to donate to our auction? They would be much appreciated. Remember, also, that guests are always1 welcome.

2 JANES SWAN SONG Maybe because the swan makes such haunting sounds. It s been fun trying to make a few bad funnies each month. Calling people by the wrong name and seeing if you can read my bad spellin. Since Bob Rudkin has been coming to Thursday night carving, he must be out of the Federal Pen and Lennie was never caught; now it s my turn to pay off my credit cards. The April 9 meeting of the Idaho Woodcarver s Guild was called to order in our spacious allotted space at WoodCraft. Since the Artistry in Wood committee meeting was still making lots of noise in the Library, President Frank Capshaw went ahead without them. There were 21 people present including two guests, Shellie Seteia and Ken Petersons. We were also revisited by Swede Lisk. Hope to see a lot more of you Swede. Treasures report: Lennie reported a starting balance of $ A check was written to the show Committee for $ Other bills were paid leaving us with a balance of $ Secretary s report: was approved as printed in newsletter. Old Business: Show Committee: A call was made for all old show tables, we need at least 10. People are needed for. Show setup and take down. Brown s Gallery must be emptied before set up can begin. Rob Bosley reported that Flyer/posters would be placed by a business called Thumb Tacks. Remember you can register on line for $3.00, and at the door on Friday for $4.00. The other clubs joining in this venture are giving us good support. Demonstrations have been arranged for both Saturday and Sunday. Elections: Nominations were taken from the floor for 2nd and 3rd, Vice Presidents. We took in a whopping $71 dollars. Program: Monte Dick presented a owl carving class. He had blanks and patterns for all of us. He also had examples of several styles of finishing for us to look at. Most members went home with a an owl that was almost finished. Good job Monte. Respectfully submitted, Jane Eubanks Out going Secretary Show and Tell Roy Bosley shared a scene carved in spruce. He called it Canyonland Utah Prospector. His goal with this carving was to produce an exaggerated 3D effect. Using size of characters to create the illusion of distance. An interesting point is the flecks of gold in the prospector s pan are real. Steve Mareno brought a work in progress fish which he had carved recently in a power carving class taught by Virgil Butler, up in McCall. Steve recommends the class. Monte showed 3 birds he had carved with the able help of Beck Beus and Carver s Illustrated Holiday Issue. Great job on your first birds, Monte. 3

4 Show and Tell, cont d From Walt Mifflin, I just want to express my appreciation for the privilege of sharing my carvings at our Show & Tell each month, even though I haven't been able to continue my favorite carving effort. I certainly miss doing the carvings that I've shown at our meetings. My appreciation extends also to being able to see and admire the variety of carvings of our members. It has been a pleasure to share my carvings with such an excellent carving group. Thanks to all, Walt Walt Miflin shared his beautiful Pin-tailed Duck with us. As he stood up Walt said, It s time for duck 101 again. The Pin-tail is elegant as it sits high in the water. It s name comes from the long tail feather. It is the most wide spread duck on our continent. One was known to live to 17 years old. Walt, thanks for providing our continuing education on our feathered friends Gene Fuller is full of surprises. Gene says in his house are large windows and from time to time he hears a thump and finds that another bird has tried to fly thought the clear panes. He said that some little kids picked up one and Gene carved a base to put it on. He proceed to open a large coffee can and request that Lennie help him lift the unfortunate little critter out of the can. Now for some reason Lennie was not to excited about retrieving this natures tragedy. Brave Jane Eubanks agreed to Gene s request by saying, Knowing you, Gene, sure I ll lift it out. He had carved what he called a Clean Window Victim. It was a very bedraggled Blue Jay. He got the idea from Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine. Great work! Beck Beus shared a great Cottonwood Bark carving. This is the first bark carving in which Beck carved out the back. He finished the carving with two coats of lacquer. He also, shared a little Dove. 4

5 Idaho Artistry In Wood On May 2 and 3, an amazing event took place here in Boise. Artisans, who create by manipulating various forms of wood into works of art came together. The first annual Idaho Artistry In Wood held a judged show at Brown s Gallery in downtown Boise. There were examples of woodcarving, woodturning, woodburning, scrolling, fine woodworking, marquetry, gourds and intarsia. What a wonderful opportunity to share our passions with each other and the people of Boise. The following are some photos taken at the show. 5

6 Idaho Artistry in Wood, cont d Upcoming Events Woodcarver s Jamboree On the Memorial Day weekend, May the Woodcarvers Jamboree will once again be held in Twin Falls, Idaho on the College of Idaho campus. The cost for the weekend is $200 and will cover three full days of carving and painting with an instructor of your choice. Woodcraft Open Carving The chips and tall tales fly rampant from 6:30pm until everyone leaves on Thursday nights at Woodcraft. We meet each Thursday night, except our normally scheduled IWG Meeting.
