1 Houston Area Woodcarvers Newsletter November 15, 2010 Volume 2, Issue 10 November Class: Carve a Santa This month s class is carving a miniature Santa with John Husband. John has taught woodcarving at the Woodcraft store for the past 15 years. Cost is $1 for the blank. Christmas Party Dec. 18 th Don t miss the fun, 9am 2pm. Pot Luck meal: bring your favorite dish. Drinks, plates and utensils will be provided. Carving Exchange: bring a wrapped carving that you have finished. (Bring a carving to get a carving). Charity Auction: there will be a silent auction of tools, books, and wood to benefit this year s charities.

2 Page 2 Newsletter President s Thank You Note To everyone that attended this year s show and classes, I hope you had a good time. I sure did. It takes a lot of work to organize this event, and I appreciate all of the members who donated their time and effort to make it happen. Thank you show chairs Carolyn and Preston Smith for arranging and organizing everything. Thank you Lorraine Lewis for making sure that all paperwork was completed and checks disbursed. Thank you JoAn Brueggeman for running the competition. Thank you Ronnie Boston for an exciting whittling contest. Thank you Shelley Key and Helen Havemann for providing the refreshments and helping setup. Thank you Pat Felder for selling raffle tickets and helping setup. Thank you Zane Bumguardner and Fred Childers for gopher and delivery services. Thank you Jeff Teter and John Curcio for taking photographs. And thank you everyone who participated. I also want to thank everyone who represented the Houston Area Wood Carvers at the Texas Woodcarvers Guild show. Thanks to Ronnie Boston we had a great looking club table. Thanks to Lorraine Lewis we had a second club table this year that was dedicated to selling charity carvings. Last but not least, I want to thank Brigitte Bosarge for her generous donation to Project Victory. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. Welcome and Let s Carve Welcome to new members Dan Weaver and Randall Clements, and to prior member John Husband. We also welcome visitors Jim Barrackman, Felipe Narvaez, Mari Vitro, Kenan Schultz, Arnold and Mary Moush, and Russ Terry. We hope you come back to carve with us again. Jim Berry updated us on the HAWC bird carving group. On January 15, 2011, they will begin a small scale Canvasback carving. Let Jim Berry or Pete Reittinger know if you are interested in this group. Project Victory is a rehabilitation program for military personnel and veterans who suffer from post concussive symptoms or traumatic brain injuries. Pete will teach a carving class for them. 3 Volume 2, Issue 10 Page 3 Berny Alvarez made these fish from firewood. Fred Childers made these cardinal ornaments. When top notch broke on one, he made a punk cardinal with piercings. Another is a Lady Gaga cardinal. Give him your ideas for new ones. James Goertz carved the pineapple bowl in butternut He used 3 coats of Watco liquid wax for finishing. He calls this fiddle whittle. Jenny Smith carved the wooly rams from cutouts.

4 Page 4 Newsletter Sherry Redfield carved the fish and used colored ink to paint it., then finished it with Danish oil. The Dragon was done with electric torch and woodburner. The pony woodburning has cherry Danish oil finish. The box with inlay is Zuni style. All are her own original artwork she designed. For the colors she uses India ink. Sherri Redfield s Owl was woodburned from her original design. She used Danish oil for the cherry color.

5 Volume 2, Issue 10 Page 5 Elmo McCoy carved the old mahogany man with bowl by hand and power from a picture in Chip Chats. He used a Dremel with a seed sized burr to get the rough finish so it looks like rock. Fred Carter used Texas cottonwood to carve the whimsical house. He used a green wash on the roof and then applied a Feed N Wax finish. Ronnie Boston showed several holding crosses from club members. Dianah Miller did the Rock of Ages cross. He also showed us the twin tower friendship sticks. The bottom of the base lists everyone who did each carving. It will be auctioned off at Kerrville.
