The strop is busy as we attempt to rid ourselves from the dreaded fuzzies. There are scattered dabs of paint here and there on the kitchen table. In the next room, your patient spouse eagerly awaits your assistance in getting the holiday decorations from the attic. Ahhh, life is good. Too bad you didn t start these promised projects in June when you were just sitting around. Well perhaps there is a hint of a New Year s resolution. Sound familiar? There s but a few days before the Idaho Woodcarver s Annual Holiday Feast and handmade gift exchange. So you better get cooking twice.once for the potluck and secondly for the gift exchange. Thursday DEC 6:30pm This year it will be held at the Wright Community Congregational United Church of Christ. The church is located at 4821 Franklin Road; near the SE corner of Franklin and Orchard Sts. We will use their kitchen including cutlery and dishes, so no paper plates this year. If you come a little early, you can help set up and if you come a little late you can help cleanup. MENU There will be turkey and ham provided by the club treasury and cooked to perfection by carvers with the least amount of membership time as well as most likely the most. Perhaps we can judge their culinary carving styles and expertise. The club will also furnish beverages. GIFT EXCHANGE The gift exchange items are not limited to carvings but they are supposed to be handmade/homemade using your own innate talents. I m looking forward to an evening of fun and fellowship with a few surprises too. 1 Steve

2 November 2009 Minutes At 6:32 President Steve Moreno welcomed 23 members of the Idaho Wood Carvers Guild to the November meeting. He first announced that the Turners and friends had turned and finished 1,250 pens for the men in service. That s a lot of turning. The minutes were approved as written in the last newsletter. The deadline for paying dues is tonight. David Sharp will continue to send newsletters to unpaid members by e mail. Steve reminded the group to show up for the carve in at the Boise main Library from 10:00 to 1:00 on November 20. Steve announced that the Christmas party would be December 9 at 6:30. This year the party will be at the Congregational Church, Just past Orchard going East on Franklin. Cleve volunteered to cook the turkey and Amy will bring a ham. Don t forget your wrapped gift. Steve has been contacted by someone who would like a fish design carved in a tree trunk. Any takers? The program for the January meeting will be wood burning. The members were asked to bring their burners; Sharon will lead us in hands on demo. Roy told us the result of his survey. When all is said and done the group were most interested in Caricature and Birds. The information gathered may help us later in choosing a class s. There was some discussion about the money we have in savings. One idea was to help members pay for the spring Jamboree. Cleve suggested a class in carving Cypress Knees. He volunteered to contact a teacher and see what would be available. The committee for training show judges has found very little information. They will look further to find a curriculum. If anyone know where they could find such information please let us know. Gene reported the show prospectus was finished and the committee has eliminated some of the categories. Eric will be working with Toni on our new web site. Don Brigham asked if there was any interest in our teaching Veterans to carve their own canes. A call was also made for more walking sticks. The raffle was short and sweet with only two items. We are sending out a plea for more good stuff or ideas for future raffles. As always a wonderful Show and Tell followed the meeting. Remember to bring your Show and Tell to the Christmas Party. The meeting was adjourned. Our program was given by Cleve. He handed out patterns and wood then showed us how to make a guard for our knives. In the absence of our Secretary I have submitted these minutes. Jane 2

3 Show and Tell Amy Linkert thrilled us with her beautiful Nativity Scene and a great caricature. Beck Beus shared his fisherman. Monte Dick re carved his large Santa and shared it with us. Great job! Robert Anderson showed us a cowboy, which he carved in one of Cleve s Classes. Safety tip Avoid breathing sanding/grinding dust, especially if you are working with spalted wood. Microorganisms are often present in spalted wood that have been known to attack the lungs of woodcarvers resulting in incurable lung disease. Dust masks and/or dust collectors should be used without fail. Gene Fuller shared 4 caricature bottle stoppers and a hillbilly pulling flower petals to see if, she loves me. Doug Rose is making great progress on his Duck. David Sharp showed his first attempt at cottonwood bark carving. Carving tip Some inexperienced carvers have a sense of dread and a fear of cutting themselves to the extent that it limits their potential carving ability and enjoyment. A carver's glove worn on the holding hand will eliminate the necessity for extreme caution and lead to more carving enjoyment. These gloves have metal mesh in the fabric and afford excellent protection. Some users of safety gloves have had difficulty gripping the work piece. A thin coat of rubberized caulking compound applied only to the surface of the glove that comes into contact with the work piece will greatly reduce the problem. 3

5 Carving Tip Body proportions are determined by using the RULE OF THREE below the head in the following formula: Shoulder to Waist is one third; Waist to Mid Knee is one third and Mid Knee to Bottom of Feet is one third. Maybe And just maybe I ll hide tomorrow too Open Carving We continue to meet on every Thursday evening, except the 2 nd Thursday, at 6:30 pm, at Woodcraft. Just bring whatever you are carving and join in the fun, great conversation and it s a good chance to learn from other carvers. Take advantage of all that s offered by our Club. 5

6 Upcoming Events February 19, Saturday Carve In Garden City Library INVITATION TO ARTISTS WHOSE WORK INCLUDES WOODTURNING WOODCARVING WOODBURNING MARQUETRY SCROLLING FINE WOODWORKING GOURDS AND INTARSIA You are invited to participate in the 2011 IDAHO ARTISTRY IN WOOD SHOW The 2011 Idaho Artistry in Wood Show will be held Saturday, February 26 and Sunday, February 27 at the Holiday Inn Convention Center, 3300 Vista Ave., Boise, Idaho. Competitors from all skill levels, Beginner Expert, are invited to submit their entries for display and judging. The show will also include vendors, a banquet and auction. The Idaho Artistry in Wood Show continues a cultural tradition and competitive exhibition that has been one of the leading displays of wood art in the Western United States. Registration will take place on Friday, February 25, 2010 from 12 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn. Detailed information on the show will be available in the coming weeks at Woodcraft in Boise and from the following member groups of the Idaho Artistry in Wood Association: Idaho Woodcarvers Guild, Treasure Valley Scrollers, Southwest Idaho Wood Turners Association, Ada County Woodworkers and Idaho Gourd Society. Each group will have registration forms and a prospectus available. The cost of participation in the show is $3 per entry for pre registered pieces and $5 for registrations at the door. Youth age 16 and under may compete without cost. 7 Upcoming Classes Weekly Wood Carving with Lennie Williams Lennie teaches on Tuesdays from 6 pm 8 pm. Learn the basics of wood carving any style: relief, architectural, realistic, caricature, wildlife, coastal Indian, chip carving. Beginning students will work on a practice piece to learn the basic techniques of carving, overview of carving tools and their care, and an overview of different styles of carving. Upon completion of the basics, students may work on a carving in the style of their choice on an on going basis. New students need to meet with the instructor one week prior to their first class. $30.00/class or 4 class punchcard for $ Class fee does not include materials.
