October Club Report October 7th Board Meeting - New Competition Rules & Table Registration The Board discussed changes and clarifications to Club By-Laws, and passed changes to the Competition Judging Rules, and Table Registration including fee changes. New Table Registration & Competition Entry & Judging Rules forms have been approved. There are now two forms; one for Table Registration, and one for Judging Entry & Rules. Action on By-Laws was deferred. Copies of the new forms are appended to the newsletter and will be availbale at the next meeting. Highlights of changes: $5 fee increase for non-commercial tables. This increase takes place on January 1st. Each year, the old fees will apply until December 31st and then increase $5; this is to encourage early registration to facilitate preparations for the spring show. The number of carving competition entries was increased from two to four with a maximum of two in the same category. The multiple table loop hole was closed; an extra table fee does not enable extra entries. A maximum of four carvings may now be entered per competitor. This is to encourage a greater number of entries and exposure for our carvers. A "Club Table" has a maximum of 6 entries, but only one per person. Carvings entered for judging must have been completed after the last Annual Mid- Wis. Chippers Spring Show competition. For our 2019 show this means the carvings must be completed after April 29, Masters Class will now compete with all classes in the Best of Show Competition. "Cut Out" and "Rough out" are now defined terms. "Cut outs" are allowed for competition in all classes, but no "rough outs" are allowed in Open or Masters. No class project carvings having instructor carved or instructor painted portions may be entered in either Open or Masters. See the new forms for all changes and clarifications to the fees, rules and guidelines. The By-Laws are under continuing review. The Board prioritized its efforts to focus on changes to the Annual Show Table Registration and Competition Rules. Other matters discussed included membership, the Annual Show, meeting speakers, presentations, and possible carving classes. October 7th Club Meeting Gene Bengel, President opened the meeting with a welcome to new members and introductions. Attendance was 31. Bill Tuchscherer, Treasurer reported there were 61 paid members for the new club year and 23 Tables had been rented for the 2019 Show. An update was provided on Al Jones, Denis Hoffman, Lou McCutcheon. It was also noted that Pat Pelkey was helping with health concerns of his grandchildren and that Greg Wirtz, who has instructed many of our members, had a recent heart procedure. 4 of 18

October 7th Club Meeting continued Club Shirts and Name Tags orders were taken at the October meeting. Betsy Popp donated carving patterns to the club. Betsy also volunteered to give a habitat demonstration at the November club meeting. Betsy also indicated the possiblity of her offering a six day class in Chris Rigotti said that the Wittenberg Sawmill had 10" x 10" x 8 foot long cedar which is useful for duck carving. The upcoming Capital Area Carvers show in Madison was noted. Both Keith Melzer and Gene Bengel plan to have tables there. A preliminary sign up sheet demonstrated sufficient interest for Denny Neubauer classes next May on the three days following the Spring Show. The three one dayclasses will be on: Knife making; sharpening; and "Little People" caricature carving. Gene Bengel gave a presentation on knife & tool sharpening with a demonstration of his power sharpening set up. Gene explains a fine point to Hugo Paulik. From any angle the club was on edge listening to cutting remarks. Show 'N Tell at the October meeting. Betsy Popp led off for Show 'n Tell showing her original chickadees and the resulting resin casts made from them by a casting comany in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Betsy explained one of her approaches to the problem of an artist making money from their work to support their artistic endeavors. It takes a lot of time to create a original detailed wood carving. By using a firm to make excellent quality resin cast copies of her work, Betsy hopes to generate sales of the resin casts. These casts are desired by people who want a model for their own carving efforts or they are painters interested in painting replica birds or in practicing their painting skills. Often the same cast may be employed for not only male and female paint schemes but for similar birds. 5 of 18

October Meeting Show 'N Tell continued... Golden Crowned Kinglets and chickadees. Can you tell which are the originals and which are the painted casts of Betsy's bird art? Linda Gomach shows her blue ribbon grandson pyrography from the Point show. Steve Cousins' Kestrel was a project at Fond du Lac Sr. Center Carving Group. 6 of 18 Mike Rammer's otter rests on lily pads.

October Meeting Show 'N Tell continued... Don Weyenberg's beautifully carved gospel story Jesus cross. Irene Petrick's woodburned and Steve Binder's perch colored Brewers Logo. shows Steve's habitat skill. Gene Bengel took a 3rd in the Advanced Class amongst very talented competition for his otter rising up from the water. Gene also provided an encouraging update on Al Jones. 7 of 18

Your small forge will be heated using a propane torch with special tip and you will learn how to forge a knife blade out of round stock or a drill bit. You will install your forged knife blade unto a handle to form a completed knife. There will be a variety of hardwoods to choose from including cholla cactus for your handles. Class II (One Day) Knife & Carving Tool Sharpening Learn how to get a sharp tool with stones and with power, and also learn various techniques that will make sharpening easier. Denny Neubauer has sharpened tens of thousands of tools and has used many different sharpening systems. He has taught many carvers how to get a sharp tool whether knife, v-tool, gouge or whatever, and he will show you how to sharpen your tools. Also, if you have problems with your own sharpener, whether a Tormex, a Burke, a grinder, a sharpening stone, or a homemade contraption and want help, then bring it along and Denny will show you how to use it and solve your sharpening problems. Denny will also have sharpening equipment for teaching you as well. Class III (One Day) Carving "Little People" Carve "little people" step by step with a knife under the guidance of Denny. Denny's style is strongly influenced by Jack Price and the flat plane style of Harley Resfal. Denny calls his style, "My square approach to round carving." Carvings will be made from a 1" x 1" basswood stick. This is chiefly knife carving, so bring your sharp knife or use the one made in Class I. A variety of sample carvings will be available as models. Denny Neubauer is the founder of Denny Tools and the Denny Knife. Before retiring and selling his business (now known as OCC tools), Denny had made and sharpened tens of thousands of tools, which were sold through a network of over 50 retailers. Denny has also been carving for over 30 years. He prefers to carve miniatures.
