Since 1974 our club has promoted the art of woodcarving. Our shows have been held in Shawano, Appleton, Manitowoc, Neenah, Green Bay, Menasha, New London, Darboy, Madison, Oshkosh and surrounding areas. 2 2018 Tops Off Six Year Run for Chippers Show in New London!! For the past six years, hundreds of people have gathered in New London each Spring to enjoy woodcarvings and related arts at our show. Many artworks have been sold by show exhibitors. Artistry and craftsmenship in the woodcarving arts have competed in our competitions and judges have awarded many ribbons for the best carvings. This year marks our sixth consecutive show at New London. Crystal Falls Banquet Facility has been a wonderful host, but we look forward to more room for presentations and an expanded show next year at The Oshkosh Convention Center. Mid-Wis. Chippers Club Table Can Answer Your Questions The Mid-Wisconsin Chippers (MWC) have a Show Club Table with our Club Ambassadors ready to answer any questions about the show & how to get started in woodcarving. Budding and experienced carvers are encouraged to join our club to share their talents and learn from others. Stop by to learn more. Also, at the Chippers Club Table: the Club Newsletter for May, handouts on the Woodcarving Competition, New Member perks, a limited number of vintage ChipChats (one per attendee please!), and bench full of advice. Current members may also go to the Club Table to renew membership for next year & get a free patch for early renewal. Our Treasurer thanks you! Over the summer the Club Program Committee and Board will be planning presentations, demonstrations, activities & events for our club year. Please let us know your ideas! Whether you want to do a demonstration or tour or know of a class, teacher, or have another suggestion, etc. drop a note to a Board member of Officer. New members for 2018! Just drop a note to the Secretary, Newsletter editor, Website editor, or anyone on the Board Meeting Schedule - Hold these Dates: Our preliminary Mid-Wisconsin Chippers Woodcarving Club meeting schedule for our next Club Year is out! Our kick off meeting is August 26th. The remaining dates are October 7, November 4, December 9, January 6, February 3, March 3, April 7, and May 12. Our normal meeting date is the first Sunday of each month. The September meeting is moved ahead one week to August 26th due to Labor Day. The December meeting is moved one week later for our potluck due to a Church function. Our May meeting is one week later because May 5th is our show date.

4 April Club Report President Gene Bengel opened our meeting on the Sunday after Easter with greetings to the 48 members and visitors in attendance. Following the Treasurer's report, elections were held. Elections Elected to the Board were: Rodney Manthey, Lee Belanger, Steve Binder and Denis Hoffmann. Cedric Richeson was elected Secretary replacing Peter Fronsee who will remain on the board for the next club year. Thanks to all who ran and to retiring Board members Bob Doepker and Peggy Holzknecht for their service on the Board and to Peter Fronsee for his service as Secretary. 8th Annual Oshkosh Bird Fest - Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Menominee Park, Oshkosh, Wisconsin Last year the Mid-Wis. Chippers set up an outdoor club table (no fee) at this event which runs from 6 am to 2 pm (exhibitors go from 8am to 2 pm). Chippers also had a table at the Oshkosh Bird Fest HQ events at the Oshkosh Masonic Center, 204 Washington Avenue (next to the Oshkosh Public Library) during that evening's Saturday Night Out Gallery Walk from 6 pm to 9 pm. At the April 8th meeting exhibit several Chippers signed up for this event, but there is room for more. If you want to join us at the either or both the 8-2 event and the 6-9 event, please call Gene Bengel at (920) For more event information on the Oshkosh Bird Fest check the website: MWC Club Table at Stevens Point The Chippers will have a Club Table at the Wisconsin River Show in Stevens Point. At the May meeting, there will be a sign up sheet for (a) people staffing the table & (b) people submitting works to be judged. There was some sentiment that people staffing the table should have priority for submission of carvings for judging (6 per table). Chris Rigotti secured the Table following a vote to do so at the April meeting. Board to Review By-Laws & Competition Rules The Board plans to hold a summer meeting for the Board or subcommittee(s), at a date to be announced, to review Club By-Laws and Competition Judging Rules. Trailer The club trailer repairs have been completed by Badger Trailer at a cost $606. The Club also authorized payment for storage of the trailer. The trailer will be stored at Stuff-In Storage in Neenah for $23 per month (by renting for a year the club received one month free). The club also voted to obtain and pay for a spare tire and jack for the trailer.

5 Weatherbee Class Approved The Rich Weatherbee Caricature Sculpting & Carving Class had 9 people who said they would attend. The class has a 8 person minimum, so the club authorized proceeding to commit to hold the class. See details below. Melzer Gourd Carving Class Approved Signup sheets were passed around and there was sufficient interest shown for Keith Melzer to teach a Beginner Gourd Carving Class in August (Details below.) 44th Annual Show Prior to the April meeting 44 tables had been registered by 40 different exhibitors and vendors. Special thanks to the 33 exhibitors and vendors who registered early by the end of our March meeting (and who received/will receive a free club patch for doing so.) Early registrations are a tremendous help to coordinating the show! Raffle Notes: Over 40 items were donated for the 44th MWC Show Bucket Raffle including 2 club carved Friendship Canes, a Colwood Detailer Woodburner donated by Colwood, 2 Bench Hooks (one is left handed), a sharpening strop, a woodburned Cribbage Board with the Club logo, and bird carvings galore: Black Capped Chickadees, European Bee Eater, a comfort bird, a Swan cutting board, a woodburned Junco, an Oriole statue, handmade vases, baskets, Cardinals, Hummingbird, a wood car, a wood tractor trailer truck, a Hobby Horse, carving books and Ramelson carving tools, caricatures, a snowman (get it before it melts;) airbrush compressor, wine, coin collection from 1968, football, golf equipment, and more!!!!! Show 'N Tell Lots to see! First The Friendship Canes, made by the Club. Thanks to Bill Tuchscherer for assembling these unique works of art from the blocks created by the Chipper artists.

6 Show 'N Tell continued Bill Tuchscherer woodburned rock on an unusually cut piece of basswood. Dick Turner shows his longhorn steer. 3 baby raccoons woodburned by John Goheen. Jeff Breier suggested painting the eyes to make woodburnings stand out. Jim Goheen carved this panda for his 100 year old aunt. Irene Petrik burned the bridge in Winneconne. Keith Melzer showed three of his carvings from the recent Betsy Popp class. Peter Fronsee's pyrography of ducks and bulrushes was woodburned during classes at the Oshkosh Senior Center. Bill Tuchscherer was a visiting artist at this class offered by Gene Bengel & Dick Christenson.

7 Show 'N Tell continued Linda Gomach's first Show 'N Tell carving is a bluegill that Linda carved and painted in Dick Christensen's class in Oshkosh. Mike Rammer made these comfort birds using laminated wood from Woodcraft in Appleton. The laminate is normally used in woodturning. Gene Bengel, Club President, is a Master carver, but in addition to teaching classes, Gene takes a few too. 8 Rich Weatherbee Caricature Class June 12 & 13! Nationally known carver Rich Weatherbee will teach Caricature Carving & Sculpting Classes in this Mid-Wis. Chippers sponsored event on June 12 & 13 (Tuesday & Wednesday), Students may take either beginning clay caricature sculpture or an intermediate & advanced class in caricature wood carving. Students should have hand tools such as carving knife, palm chisels & gouges. A selection of patterns will be available. The combined classes will have a maximum of 12 students. The cost is $150. An additional materials fee of $15-$30 is paid at classtime. Extra cutouts will be available for an extra fee. Classes will be held at St. Bernadette Catholic Church School in Appleton. Here are some examples of Weatherbee student work from MWC club members. "I started carving at a very early age. My father, an excellent carver himself, let me carry a jackknife, taught me the basics of grain direction and stop cuts. I started carving and sculpting the same time around I'm a member of the Caricature Carvers of America and teach wood carving and design throughout the United States. My hope is that my talent and experience will help wood carvers reach their potential and keep the excitement of this great art form alive! I reside in beautiful Colorado Springs Colorado." - Rich Weatherbee Rich Weatherbee is a founding member of the Caricature Carvers of America. Keith Melzer Beginning Gourd Carving Class With a whole bunch of caveats that make Keith sound like a Philadelphia lawyer, he has agreed to teach a Beginning Gourd power carving class August 2, 3, 4, and 9, 10, 11. These are consecutive Thursday, Friday, Saturday classtimes from 8-4 for 6 full days. Classes will be at St. Mark's Lutheran Church at 140 South Green Bay Road in Neenah. Class size will be limited to eight students maximum. Cost To Be Determined. Keith says the gourds should be ready for carving by August. Dust collectors will be required. 9 Woodcarving & Woodburning Classes Carving & Pyrography Classes held at the Oshkosh Senior Center (OSC) North Building Woodshop, 200 North Campbell Road, Oshkosh, WI tel: (920) Gene Bengel Woodcarving Class - Open Project This carving class is open to anyone who would like to work on any carving, chipping or burning. Master Carver Gene Bengel is available to assist with your project. Cost covers machine access. Wood is available for purchase. This popular class always fills up fast! Mondays, April 30, 2018 to June 25, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to noon (No class on May 28). Cost $20 for residents and $25 for non-residents. The class size will be a maximum of 14. The last class filled up super-quick, so do not wait. Registration begins on April 23th. Gene Bengel & Dick Christensen Beginning Woodburning Techniques & Tricks This pyrography (woodburning art) class is open to beginners who would like to learn how to burn images on wood using modern variable temperature woodburners with several different designs of wire pen tips. Students may make an oversized "Wooden Nickel" and/or mallard refrigerator magnet (Hmm, what will the design be????). Practice woodburning techniques under the guidance of experienced pyrographers. A limited number of woodburners and pen tips are available for use in class or bring your own. Cost covers wood. Basswood is available for purchase in the woodshop for other projects. Fridays, May 4-25, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Cost $15 Oshkosh residents; $20 non-residents) No daily user fee. The class size - minimum of 5 & maximum of 7. Registration opens April 23, Deadline is May 3, 2018.

10 Gene Bengel & Dick Christensen Intermediate Woodburning - Colored Mallard Drake This intermediate pyrography class is open to experienced pyrographers or those who have completed the Beginner Class. This project will woodburn and then color a mallard duck using colored pencils. The project will focus on creating multiple contrasting tonal values and shading by woodburning and add color with pencils. A limited number of woodburners and pen tips are available for use in class. Students will need to supply their own colored pencils, which will not be needed for the first class. Cost covers wood. Basswood is also available for purchase in the woodshop for other projects. Thursdays, May 3-24, 2018 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Cost $15 Oshkosh residents; $20 non-residents) The class size will be a maximum of 14. Registration begins on April 23th and the deadline is by May 1, Gene Bengel Woodcarving Class - Beginning Relief Carving - Covered Bridge Learn relief carving with three depth levels to produce shadows. Large gouges will be used two handed or with mallet. Use your bench hook or clamp the blank to table. Mallets and clamps provided. A variety of gouges will be available for use. If you have your own tools please bring them, a 4 & 10 mm V tool (60º preferred) and two gouges (sweep #3 in widths 5 & 12 mm) are recommended. Finishing will be discussed, but class will focus on each student completing an unfinished relief carving. Mondays, April 30, 2018 to May 21, 2018 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Cost $45 Oshkosh residents ($50 non-residents) Fee includes 9" x 12" x 1" wood carving blank. The class size will be a maximum of 7. Registration opens on April 23, 2018.

11 Woodcarving & Woodburning Classes - Continued Carving & Pyrography Classes sponsored by Capital Area Carvers of Wisconsin (CACW) held at the Sun Prairie Colonial Club, 3018 Blankenheim Lane, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin Details & Registration information at : uploads/6/2/7/8/ /cacw_klublank_classes.pdf David Kublank will teach Scandinavian Flat Plane carving on May 3, 4, and 5, The student will have a few blanks to choose from. Tools Needed: A sharp carving knife with /8 long blade. Finishing materials will be provided. Thursday, May 3, Noon to 4?; Friday & Saturday May 4 & 5, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cost $75 plus $5-$10 per blank. The class size will be a maximum of 10. Registration open. Lynn Kublank will teach basic techniques and safety procedures for woodburning. Wood will be provided. There will be some patterns and transfer sheets supplied. You are welcome to bring your own pattern/project. All skill levels welcome. Tools Needed: Variable temperature wood burner and tips, pen & pencil. Thursday, May 3, Noon to 4?; Friday & Saturday May 4 & 5, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cost: $75 plus $5 and up per project. The class size will be a maximum of 6. Registration open. Carving & Pyrography Classes are sponsored by the Berlin Parks & Recreation Department (920) and held at the Berlin Senior Center, 142 Water St., Berlin, WI Details & Registration information at : The Berlin Senior Center Woodcarvers will teach Beginning Woodcarving Skills. Students will learn first hand carving techniques. The The final product will be either a flat relief carving, a hand carved friendship bird or a musical frog. Students must bring their own leather gloves or garden gloves with palm grips. Woodcarving supplies and tools will be furnished at class. Ages 10 through adult. Wednesdays, June 13, 20, & 27, 10:00 a.m. - Noon. Cost $15 The class size will be a maximum of 8. Code S Diane Frank will teach Woodburning for Adults. Students will make a basswood cutting board with a woodburned design. Students will need to bring a woodburning pen and a heavy duty extension cord. Bring a photo if you want a specific design or the Instructor will have patterns as well. This class is 3 consecutive Thursdays. Ages 17 through adult. Thursday, July 12, 5:00-6:00 p.m. and Thursdays, July 19 & 26, 5:00-7:00 p.m. Cost: $15 plus $13 for materials (basswood & sanding supplies). The class size will be a minimum of 5 and no maximum. 12 Greg Merckx will teach Youth & Adult Carving 101. The ancient technique of carving is used to create a decorative game fish from a block of wood. Using a box cutter type knife, students will make their choice of trout, northern, bass, perch, or bluegill. The piece will then be painted and the finished project set on a display pedestal. All equipment included. *Participants have a choice of taking the Tuesday OR Thursday class. (Three 2 hour classes.) The week long Congress also has 1, 2, 3, and 5 day seminars & classes, and an Awards Banquet. The one day classes run $45, 2 day - $90; 3 day - $135; and 5 day - $225 all plus materials costs. The Doane Experience - July 22, 2018 through July 28, Doane University, 1014 Boswell Ave., Crete, NE. "To promote and continue the art of woodcarving," this 42nd annual week of woodcarving is sponsored by the Mid-America Woodcarvers Association. 17 classes, each a week long, are offered in architectual carving, bark carving, intaglio relief, antler carving, gunstock carving, bird carving, caricatures, chip carving, decorative gourds, swedish flat plane carving and more. Carv-Fest August 9, 10, 11, Annual Minnesota Carving Festival at Alexander Park - Ice Arena, 1816 NW 2nd Avenue, Faribault, Minnesota. 48 workshops over 3 days; Instructors from 6 states. 15 Oshkosh Convention Center Claims 2019 Chippers Show Next year, May 5, 2019, the 45th Annual Mid-Wisconsin Chippers Show, Competition & Sale will be held at The Oshkosh Convention Center in downtown Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
