3 Welcome to the 2017 Stanton Drew Flower show. This is not just a village flower show, any more, it has grown to be a village fun day with something for all the family. Not just flowers, but paintings, drawings, cakes, jams, photographs, home-made toys, arts & crafts and much more. There will be games for the children, sweet stalls, a bouncy castle, and welly wanging and the return of the popular Pet s corner in the paddock. Ice creams, barbecue, Thai food stall to tease your taste buds, and a bottle bar. From 2:30pm to 4pm the Church tower will be open. You can take a tour upto the Ringing and clock chambers, with a final climb to see the bells themselves in the belfry. The Church also houses displays of Arts and crafts, photographs, and children s entries. If you want a break from all the excitement, chill out with teas and homemade cakes in the Village Hall Tea room. Also in the hall will be the Village Business Links table, displaying adverts from anyone who would like to bring flyers, business cards or promotions for their village based business. Please promote your business, and please support the others when you can. This programme should provide you with all the information you need to enter the show, (see page 16). The middle pages can be removed and used / copied for the children s colouring entries (classes 87 & 93). There are two entry forms and rules under the middle pages for you to tear out. The Schedule of all the classes can also be detached from the centre. All can be photocopied to give to friends or family. This programme (in colour) can be found and downloaded on A very big thank you to all the businesses that have generously sponsored this year s Flower Show. 5 Making the most of your exhibits All over the UK folk are preparing to enter a variety of flower and produce shows. These are very much a part of our heritage, with Chelsea Flower Show regarded as the most prestigious in the world, while Hampton Court Flower Show is the largest annual flower show in the world. We must congratulate Blackmore & Langdon s for winning Gold again at this year s Chelsea show. Whatever the size, a show needs exhibitors and you do not have to be an expert to exhibit. It is the exhibitors who enter the show and the visitors who come to the show that make a flower show a success plus a little luck with the weather. Stanton Drew Flower Show committee make every effort to create a schedule of classes to encompass something for everyone from fruit, vegetable and flower classes to arts and crafts, cookery and photography and children s classes. This year we may have been caught out by the lack of rain in the early summer which may have given your vegetables a hard time, But remember everybody else has the same problem, so enter them any way. The judges are all experts in their field but are not looking for world class standard, simply the best of those exhibits presented to them. Exhibitors should get up early to select their best produce, be it fruit, flowers or vegetables while the cooks can put the finishing touches to their culinary creations. The committee and helpers will also be up with the lark preparing the marquee, church and village hall, and there is an air of expectation as folk start to arrive bearing their exhibits which all have to be checked in. Timing is tight to get the exhibits booked in, displayed, judged and the results collated and prize cards distributed before the show opens, so please try to arrive in good time to register your exhibits. Take time to read the schedule carefully, especially regarding the stated number of items in a particular class. When selecting items for a particular class look for uniformity, freshness and freedom from damage. Beans should be matched for length, beetroot of roughly the same size or carrots of the same length and thickness. Tomatoes should still have the stalk on as this gives an indication of freshness. Runner beans should snap crisply rather than bend. The children s classes are very popular with visitors and show amazing creativeness in classes such as the miniature gardens and an animal created from fruit or vegetables, while decorated fairy cakes show considerable culinary skills and flair. Above all, enjoy the day and who knows you may arrive to find that your exhibit has received a prize card when you least expected it. So don t think that your produce is not good enough - have a go you never know. Mary Payne MBE 5

6 Not good with flowers or veg? How about creating something for our arts and crafts display which we show in the church. Enthusiasm counts more than anything else, you don't need to be an expert. If you like to paint or draw then your artworks will be very welcome. Perhaps you like to work with fabric then what about a small piece of patchwork, a cushion cover or a homemade soft toy. All you yarn workers out there, how about a knitted or crocheted piece, maybe even something needle felted? Maybe paper is more your medium? Then try making cards, a scrapbook or some origami. If you fancy trying your hand at jewellery making, don't forget you can make your own beads with air drying clay Fimo or papiermâché. Anyone out there who fancies a larger project could try making a dolls house or a child's sit on toy. The writers among you have not been forgotten, express your feelings about Brexit in our class 71 a short poem about Stanton Drew and Brexit. Still not sure? Try the Photography classes, again, you don t have to be an expert, just present your photographs well and have a go. Sue Elsbury Zara s winning miniature garden 6

9 Keep to the size and shape of the cake if it is listed in the schedule. Presentation is important - try to choose a plate which suits what you have cooked. Doilies are optional but some people like to use them! Present the number of items listed in the schedule - your choice of the best in size, evenness of colour, cooking etc. Make sure jars are perfectly clean, the correct size and well labelled. No rusty lids please! Lastly - please be sure your items are in place in good time for judging and are lightly covered in cling film for protection. Cling film can be supplied at the show if you need it. Good luck and have a go! Tips from the Cookery Judge Tours of the Church Tower and Belfry Whilst at the Church, take a tour of the Bell Tower, where you can see and hear about the Ringing Chamber, the Clock Chamber, and the Belfry. Tours from 2:30pm until 4pm. Children under 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult. 9

16 What to do on the day of the show and on Friday evening before. If you plan to exhibit, here s the procedure. Complete one of the entry forms printed in the middle of the programme, following the instructions given. Please use one form per person. If you need more, either photocopy the form or print it out from the website where a special link has been added. Please print your name clearly on the form in the way you would like it to appear on any certificates that you may win. You can enter exhibits in as many of the classes as you like, limited to three entries per class. You can only win one certificate per class. If you plan to enter any exhibits in Classes 56 or above, they will be displayed in the Church. In order to get them displayed to best effect please bring them to the Church between 6pm and 8pm the evening before, with your completed entry form. The form can then be retained by you, and used to make any marquee entries on the Saturday. (Church entries will still be accepted on Saturday) All remaining classes should be brought to the main flower marquee in the village hall paddock on Saturday from 8:00 am. At registration you will be given one display label for each exhibit, with your own entry number and name on it. At the booking in table you will be assisted, if necessary, to write the class number of the exhibit on the ticket. Your name will be hidden until after judging. You will then be told where your entries have to be displayed. It is your responsibility to place them. Ask a steward if you need any assistance. All exhibits must be in place by 10:30 so that judging can begin promptly. Once you have placed your exhibit please leave, until the show opens at 2pm. If you have children who have done some work at the school, it will have been entered for them in the school categories, a few days before. Please encourage your children to enter more exhibits on the day. When they bring those extra exhibits to registration, please let the registration clerks know that your child will already have been assigned an exhibitor s number, through their school entry. If you own, or run a business which operates from the village then please bring any promotional material / flyers and leave them (considerately) on display for all to see, on the Village businesses promotion table in the Village hall from late morning onward. At 2pm the Flower Show opens, judging should be complete and class winners certificates displayed. The category winner s prize presentation and the final Best in Show Cup presentation will take place towards the end of the show. The show closes at 5pm after which it will be appreciated if you could collect your exhibits. Have a wonderful day and Good Luck. 16

29 STANTON DREW COMMUNITY CAFÉ 3rd ANNIVERSARY The Community Café has now been established for over three years. Every month, on the second Saturday, the bell ringing team will summon you to the Community Café. From 10am till midday, you can drop into the Church to enjoy a bacon or sausage butty, with a freshly made cup of coffee or tea, and meet up for a chat with other people who live in the area. You can also buy some wonderful home-made cakes and tasty home-made jams. It s a lovely relaxed and friendly atmosphere. People who have lived in the village all their lives still meet new people, and if you have just moved here, it s a great way to make new friends. All are welcome, and at any age. We put out activities and games for the children to keep them occupied so hard-pressed parents can take time out for a conversation with other people. When it first started, it was hoped that enough money would be made just to keep it going. Well it s done that and more, and so a fund has been started to help pay towards keeping the lovely space within the church up together, and to assist any small village projects that enhance the special community of Stanton Drew and Stanton Wick. We could always do with willing hands to help put out the tables, make the coffee, clear up afterwards, and all the usual jobs, so if you would like to get involved, please let us know. The contact names are below. So if you haven t tried it yet, you don t know what you are missing do come along to find out just follow the delicious smell of bacon sizzling and the aroma of freshly made coffee!
