3 hat I had to do Ater the recital, Annie recognized the anxiety in ohn s ace, and together they decided he ould leave the university and enlist in the armed orces as a ilot, thus setting his lie on its extraordinary traectory that attemts to emody the essence o his sirit This anthem serves as the rimary melodic material through various keys and triumhant treatments climaxing in a quote o the hymn Be Still My Soul It is not idely knon that ohn Glenn as also a musician ho rememered sounding Tas on the trumet in echo ith his ather, himsel a veteran o the World War I, at the local cemetery in his youth These exeriences connected Glenn s areciation o music ith his years o service to country and ello man In a triute to these exeriences in his early lie, The resident s On United States Marine Band sounded Tas in echo hen Glenn as interred ith ull honors on Aril, 07 at Arlington National Cemetery In this comosition, Godseed, ohn Glenn, the comoser dras on all asects o Glenn s lie The iece is not rogrammatic in nature, ut is instead an imression o the many comlex acets o his makeu While there are cinematic moments relecting the adventure o Glenn s lie, the iece remains grounded in his humility; artnershi ith his ie; and steadast love and commitment to his amily, his country, and his aith The iece egins very distantly ith an extensive trumet solo This solo is taken u y the tromone and layed in echo rie5ly y the trumet until the to voices 5ind each other The music continues into a layul modal section reminiscent o Glenn s small ton roots and ascination ith 5light ust ater lit-o, the iece dissolves into a reverent anthem While in training as one o the country s 5irst astronauts, ohn Glenn as suect to many trials, tests, and exeriments in an attemt to learn humans hysiological and sychological resonses to the unknon rigors o sace 5light Among these ordeals as comlete isolation or an extended eriod o time Alone in a room ith no light, no sound, and no means o communication, nearing hat must have een its end, Glenn decided the est exercise to ass the time and kee mentally engaged as to rite oetry In comlete isolation, he had to memorize each line eore continuing The olloing is the 5irst and last o seven verses Glenn comosed at this time Uon reading these lines, one thought comes to mind: Mission accomlished To mankind s every roadening store O knoledge, each must give His on eculiar talents, so that all May etter live Then use all your inorn talents, Use them each and every day Add to mankind s store o knoledge, Make them glad you assed this ay
