2 oreword My students and love beginning a new lesson book. t s a adventure similar to beginning a new school year. Starting The ntermediate Trombonist means that you re in a very secial lace in your trombone laying. No longer a beginner, you are ready to make a big jum orward in your skills and musical understanding. You ll love getting better! There s a lot about The ntermediate Trombonist that teachers will love, also. This book like all o Brad Edwards books is well organized and logical. New inormation is resented in an aroriate order with excellent instructions. Lesson lans will hel you know exactly how to organize the exercises throughout the book into 40 rogressive lessons. Many older intermediate books written beore any o us were born contain instructions that are outdated. ortunately, not so with Dr. Edwards book. Also, unlike many older methods, The ntermediate Trombonist includes exercises that are tuneul and interesting. The ntermediate Trombonist along with an excellent instructor, a metronome, a tuner, and a way to record yoursel will be a erect way to move your trombone laying orward to an exciting new level. oe Dixon San Antonio, Texas oe Dixon is a nationally recognized trombone clinician and a reciient o the 2018 oundation Award rom The oundation or Music Education. 8 7 Part One: Li Slurs Li slurs are vital! They hel you develo control over your embouchure (AHM-bo-sure). Go smoothly rom note to note with a steady stream o air. Changes in the osition o your lis should be NSDE the rim o the mouthiece. According to the lesson lan, each o these 20 slurs will be done across two units. se the slower temo during the irst unit and strive or the aster temo during the second. t's ine to choose slower or aster temos to it your ability. #1 q = 4 b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b 6th... you can't reach 7th osition, omit this. 7th... ree samle ages - The ntermediate Trombonist
9 1 Have you looked at Aendix 1, "The Overtone Series and Tuning" yet Maybe you should... While listening careully (and ossibly using a tuner), you need to make small osition adjustments on some notes to correct itch roblems on the trombone. The # symbol means 'bring in the slide' (to correct a note that is lat). The b symbol means 'extend the slide' (to correct a note that is shar). Don't overdo these corrections. Let your ear be your guide. # 6 b 6 6 Why aren't the itch corrections always marked in Because every instrument is a little dierent. Listen careully (maybe use a tuner) and make them a habit. #11 q = 6-76 # b 6 6th... b 5th... b b b b b b b b b b b 4th... b b b b b b b b b # # # b b b b b ree samle ages - The ntermediate Trombonist
10 2 Part Two: Pattern-Building Think o a scale as a attern o whole stes and hal stes. Get to know your instrument well enough that you can lay these atterns without having to write in numbers or slide ositions. Kee at it every day and you'll have a great understanding o your instrument! The exercises in this section DO NOT have temo markings. Choose a seed at which you can lay cleanly. Hal stes (H) and whole stes (W) Hal stes are the smallest interval. On trombone, this is oten a change o one slide osition. These are all hal stes: b 1 H 2 2 H 1 # 5 H 4 2 H b Sometimes, hal stes use slide ositions that aren't next to each other: 6 H 7 H b 1 2 H b 1 H n 4 H H 2 1 # 5 Two hal stes add u to a whole ste. These are all whole stes: W W b W # Major scales and tetrachords you think in terms o whole stes and hal stes, there is only ONE major scale: W-W-H-W-W-W-H. b W W H W W b W H b Every major scale is made u o the same two tetrachords (4-note grous): W-W-H b W W W Here's another examle (dierent notes, same intervals): W H W b W H b H W W H ree samle ages - The ntermediate Trombonist
11 28 liing key signatures with tetrachords Some key signatures are mirror images o each other. By 'liing' the key signature to its mirror image, the notes all change even though they are on the same lines and saces. E-lat major has lats (B b, E b, A b) and 4 naturals (, C, G, D). b b # b # # # E major has our shars ( #, C #, G #, D # ) and three naturals (B, E, A). Some alternate ositions are marked but more are ossible. Look or those close legato hal stes. 13 4 Part Three: Lyrical Legato There are duet arts available or these etudes. Check out TromboneZone.org or details. Legato Tonguing Trombonists ace a unique challenge with legato. While other instruments can simly ress keys or valves, we oten have to use a light legato tongue to revent a glissando (gliss) or smear between notes. n the exercises below, you will see a "d" indicating when this light legato tongue takes lace. Think o a little d, with lots o OH. Like this: doh-doh-doh. Mini-Exercise: Blowing Air, then Buzzing on the Mouthiece The "T" symbolizes a "toh."
