1 Three Movements or Guitar Trio Michael Lukaszuk
2 I Thorns II Giuliani III Canto This work was written seciically or the Interaces roect, hosted by The Euroean University Cyrus. The comositional rocess was quite enoyable, as the guitar has had a very imortant role in my develoment as a musician. My goal was to create a window into the world o contemorary music, while at the same time roviding young layers with something that oers edagogical value. My intention was to write or the guitar in a way that was suitable or a 6-10 year old who has been laying or at least a year I considered asects such as the actual hysical size o a guitarist that age and their hands, but the material might be challenging or an absolute beginner. These three ieces are miniatures, but they would ideally all be layed together. The irst iece, Thorns has a bit o a strained character. It is very much about cooeration, incororating some hase shiting eects in which layers move in and out o synchronicity. The second iece, Giuliani, is based on a common technique exercise based on a C maor and G7 areggio, very much reminiscent o the book 10 studies or the right hand by the early 19 th century virtuoso, Maruo Giuliani. The starts with somewhat banal areggios but gradually weaves more comlex sonorities into the mix, such as olychords and tone clusters, mixing styles old and new. The third one, Canto is melodic and has some beautiul moments, but intermittently weaves a strong sense tension into the harmony via scordatura. NB in each o the ieces, guitar should be layed by a teacher or more exerienced guitarist. Notation Guide/erormance Instructions mute with alm. Note heads with an x should be muted with alm o the right hand, but the itch should still be discernable... b Number enclosed in a circle indicates the string used to lay a note.
3 natural harmonics are notated according to where you would lay that note on the guitar, the sounding itch is not notated. So, or examle, this A would be layed on the 7 th ret o the th string. a.h. #O a.h. = artiicial harmonic, in which you will ress your inger down on that articular C# - the harmonic will be ound high u on the A string (16 th ret) # Guitar w detune The third guitarist is required to detune strings throughout the rd movement. The idea o this scordatura is to rovide harmonic colour and tension, so i the string does not arrive at the next note 100% in tune then it is OK, you can continuously adust to a more exact tuning i the oortunity resents itsel later in the iece. # O The ties that are not attached to the note mean that the note should die naturally, and reely within measure means that you can luck the notes in this order, only once each, whenever you wish as long as they occur within the start and end o the measure. gtr. 1, lay notes reely within measure # # #
