11 More Aesome String Orchestra Pieces Oriental Strings What better than a entatonic ear-orm to hook the orchestra right aay? Oriental Strings is based on a 16 measure melody that is orchestrated dierently ith each reetition (in an eic style). It is a un iece to erorm hile oering an interesting aroach to some o the basic string techniques. Viejos Tiemos Viejos Tiemos as comosed in The iece has been erormed in North and South America and in Euroe. It is a 6-minute long iece or string orchestra in the style o Barber s Adagio. The comosition as insired by my adventures as a young traveling musician. It can very ell serve as an overture or a illing iece in a tonal concert. Viejos Tiemos has been erormed by roessional and student orchestras.

12 Ready or Battle It takes disciline to become a good musician. But to stand u ater a breakdon you need more than that. Ready or Battle tells the story o a musician ho doesn't give u on her dreams. She is committed to beat the obstacles and ight or a chance to reach her ultimate goal. The iece is about courage, assion, and the inner arrior ho lives inside all artists. I dedicate it to my students ho ere the irst to hear it live. Mati I irst erormed Siegried's Idyll as an undergrad, and hen I learned that Wagner rote it or his ie ater the birth o their son, I kne I'd do something similar hen it as my turn. In the same sirit, Mati is a lullaby or my irstborn Mateo. The iece took me a bit over a month to rite and it resembles the tenderness and innocence o our young Mateo.

13 Elegy or String Orchestra Elegy or String Orchestra as comosed by César Avilés over the course o one year, being inished in the summer o The iece takes the listener through the stages o losing a loved one unexectedly; it as ritten in memory o the comoser s mother. The comosition begins by setting the atmoshere o the tragic event. A sorro section ollos resenting the irst theme ith high eeing strings. This theme transitions through contemlative harmonies into an angry orte (the loudest section o the iece). The music roceeds to a meditative segment in hich the memory o the lost one is echoed. A eaceul and serene ascent is then resented in the inal art o the iece. The elegy concludes ith an ambience o accetance and hoe.
