3 1 About the Author Korean Aerican guitarist/cooser aintains a vigorous schedule divided beteen erforing and teaching in a ide variety of usical settings. As a usician, Mr. Shin finds a unique balance beteen his classical training and dee roots in rock and oular guitar styles. This cobination drives his curiosity to seek ne odes of exression through erforance, irovisation, and coosition. Mr. Shin has been acknoledged through nuerous aards, grants and scholarshis, and has been invited to erfor and resent orkshos, asterclasses, and lectures across the U.S. and Canada. A frequent collaborator ith various usicians and ensebles, he is a eber of the Tantalus Quartet and fivebyfive. Mr. Shin is a devoted educator and shares his assion for usic ith students of all ages and levels. He has been invited to teach, resent, and adjudicate for festivals and guitar rogras around the US and Canada including Arkansas State University, Bloosburg University, Buffalo State College, Eastan School of Music, SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Potsda, Great Lakes Guitar Festival, Guitar Foundation of Aerica, Ne Mexico Classical Guitar Festival, UofL Festival (Louisville, KY), and ore. He currently teaches at The University at Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo), Eastan Counity Music School, Music & Arts (Pittsford, NY), and in his hoe studio (Penfield, NY). Preface Portraits and Melodies for the Beginning Guitarist is a collection of four books that contain short ieces for students. These have been coosed and arranged to develo roer technique at a gradual ace and ais to build reading skills along the ay. The ieces dra uon a variety of usical styles and resent unique exressive challenges for students. The use of dynaics and shaing of the hrases should be encouraged. Also, laying ith a strong sense of ulse and rhyth should be ehasized. Most iortantly, it is y ish that those ho lay these ieces find joy in aking usic through the guitar. I ould like to dedicate this collection of ieces to Professor Jaes Sith ho taught and chaired the classical guitar deartent for any years at the University of Southern California.
