Rock Guitar Basics instructor Rick Mollindo B.A Rick Mollindo T he scope of this course is to introduce you to the basics of playing Rock Style Guitar. Elements of Scales, Chords and Rock Rhythms will be presented to give an overall course of this Popular Music Style.
Parts of the guitar Optional yet very helpful gear The following items are not required for the course, but are used widely by guitar players. Some of these parts will be referred to during the course. It will be good to know these: Nut, Frets and Neck. Capo-changes the pitch of the guitar to help with vocal ranges or easy transposition (in music termsa key change). Picks-helps to strum sound louder than fingertips. Music stand-makes reading music more convenient so you remain in a comfortable position for longer periods. String winder-helps to change strings quickly. It also has a built-in peg remover that is handy for changing some steel string guitars. Just fit the box end over the tuning key and crank it. To remove the string peg (after the strings are loosened), slide the indented part of the string winder under the peg and lift it out. Tuning fork, pitch pipes or electronic tunerall help to tune the strings to the correct pitch. Metronome-helps to keep a steady beat when counting. String Winder Picks Capo Music Stand 1
Tuning your guitar The Guitar goes out of tune frequently, even while you re playing a song. It s best to eventually learn how to tune by ear. Here are some alternate methods. For Internet help on tuning your guitar, go to: Memorize String Names and Numbers! Electronic Tuner-Either plug in your guitar cable to the available jack or use the built-in microphone. Pluck a string and watch the needle on the meter go to the center. Tighten or loosen the string as needed. Tuning to a piano-if you re familiar with a piano s keys, the low E string is the same as the E just below middle C. Low E A D G B E Middle C Pitch pipes-blow the labeled pipe to the corresponding string and match the sounds. 2
Relative Tuning- Tuning strings to each others pitches. Tuning A String Tuning D String Tuning G String Tuning B String Tuning E String 4th Fret 5th Fret 5th Fret 5th Fret 5th Fret E A D A D G B G B E 3
Memorize Hand Labels! I M A P Left Hand Right Hand What you need to know to play Rock music Music in general is a combination of three things: Pitch or Melody, Harmony or Chords and Rhythm or a Beat. Melody can be the guitar solo or the singers tune. It is made up of several pitches or individual notes. Usually one guitarist in a band plays the solos. Sometime two or more can harmonize with each other. Harmony tells us which chords (three or more srtings or notes played together) and melodies sound good together. A rhythm guitarist backs the lead guitarist during a solo or when the singer is performing. Rhythm is the pulse that makes our feet tap or the beat we dance to. You will need to know how to read some music in order to play songs that others have written. 4
Introduction to Types of Guitar Music There are three common ways to write music for guitar: Chord Charts, Tablature and Standard Notation. Chord Charts The Chord chart is picture of the fret board. The Nut of the guitar is on top and the thick E or 6th string is pictured on the left. The horizontal lines are the Frets. The Dots represent finger placement. The X s mean don t play this string. The O s mean play open string (no fret). This is by far the easiest way to notate guitar music. After you play these chords a few times they are easy to recognize by the chord name alone. Once you know some of them, it s easy to look at a music book and begin playing a song right away. By recognizing chord names, you can accompany vocals or other instruments using their music. 5
Tablature or TAB is good way to write music to show more than just the chords like a chord chart. TAB can show which individual strings to play and at which fret. You can write out songs, melodies, lead guitar solos or show finger picking patterns. There is an incredible amount of TAB on the Internet, magazines and books to help you learn new songs. TAB is a picture of the six strings on a guitar. In music, the lowest sound is written on the bottom. So, the lowest string pictured is the Low E or 6th string. The one on top is the High sounding E or 1st string. The numbers mean which fret to play on the string. The O (zero) means play the string open, with no fret or finger. When the fret numbers are stacked on top of each other, it means play the noted strings together in one strum. When the fret numbers are written side-by-side, it means play strings one at a time. 6
Standard Notation is the most complete way to write music. It gives the melody lines, chords and counts of how long to play and hold notes. It will help you study the guitar beyond simple strums and open up new styles of guitar music. Standard Notation showing D chord For this class we ll mostly learn about Chord Charts and TAB. Example of Standard Notation showing Melody, Chords and Rythym Thumb Placement It is important to place your left-hand thumb at the center of the guitar neck. Don t let it hang over the top. Think of Pinching the Neck instead of Gripping the NecK. This allows your fingers to stretch as far as needed. Correct Thumb Placement is at the center of the guitar neck. Holding a Pick Hold a pick between the thumb and index finger. 7
The 5 Chords The 5 Chords are a group of chords used extensively in Rock and Blues. These Chords are played on two strings only. They are sometimes called Power Chords. Songs are made by playing a chain of repeating Chords called Chord Progressions. Some songs only change between two, three or four chords and some use more. You will need to know a few chords and be able to smoothly change between them to play a song. It takes a little practice to be able to change from chord to chord, so don t be discouraged at first. It will soon be second nature. 8
5 Chords (and Barre Chords) on the Fretboard This is an easy way to make new 5 Chords and know where other 5 Chords are on the fretboard. Since there are only two strings and frets used in a 5 Chord, the lowest sounding note or string gives the name of the 5 Chord. For example if you play a 5 Chord on the 6th fret of the 6th string, the 5 Chord is called A Sharp 5 or B Flat 5. If you play a 5 Chord on the 4th fret of the 5th string the 5 Chord is called C Sharp 5 or d FLat 5. 9
String Muting Practice. You hear this type of strum frequently in Rock. The left hand mutes the strings and the right hand contunues the beat. 10
11 Knowing this will help you write songs and figure out other music. It will limit your choices of chords and notes to the ones that sound the most musical for some simple music. You can subsitute chords in place of these, but these will guide your music writing.
Scale Formulas Understanding how major and minor scales are constructed makes it easy to see how other scales are formed. It may not be practical to know all possible scale types, but there are a few that are used frequently in popular music. The Pentatonic Scales and the Blues Scale are used often in Rock, Pop Blues and other styles. Pentatonic Scales get their name from the root Pent meaning five tones. They use five notes instead of all eight. There are several Pentatonic Scales. Here are two types: the Major Pentatonic Scale and the Minor Pentatonic Scale. Their sound is very familiar in Blues and Rock. Major Pentatonic Scale Formula uses the 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 degrees of the scale. Minor Pentatonic Scale Formula uses the 1, flat 3, 4, 5, and flat 7 degrees of the scale. Blues Scale Uses six tones- Hexatonic. The Formula uses the 1, flat 3, 4, flat 5, 5, and flat 7 degrees of the scale. 12

C BLUES SCALES The following Tab is the C Blues Scale in three positions or areas on the Fretboard. Practice them using alternating pick strokes. When your re comfortable use them to play along with the C Blues Song. You can download it from 16
Barre (Bar) Chords Bar Chords are extremely useful. They make it possible to play the Chords you already know, all the way up the fretboard. All styles of music use them, especially Rock music. They take a bit of work at first, but after a few days of practice they become very easy to play. What s different about Bar Chords is that the #1 finger of the left hand stops (bars) all or most of the strings and the #2, #3 and # 4 fingers can recreate the shapes of the chords you know. Practice Tips: Try planting your #1 and #2 fingers first, play them; then place #3 and #4, play them; then plant the last strings with the #1 finger to complete the Bar Chord. Also try playing the chords at the 5th fret. (The strings have less tension further from the nut.) Then when you re comfortable with the Bar Chord try it at the 1st fret. #2, #3, and #4 fingers form the rest of the chord. #1 finger stops all or most strings Barre (Bar) Chord The curve lines mean Bar across the fret. The 2,3 and 4 fingers make the shape of the A Major Chord B Bm B7 The 3 and 4 fingers make the shape of the A7 Chord F Fm F7 The 2, 3 and 4 fingers make the shape of the E Major Chord The 2 and 3 fingers make the shape of the E7 Chord These chords can be moved up and down the fretboard to make other chords. Look at the Notes On The Fretboard chart to see where the other notes are on the fretboard. For example, if you play the B chord on the 5th fret it becomes a D chord. If you play the F Chord on the 3rd fret it becomes a G chord. If you play the Bm chord on the 7th fret it becomes an Em. 17
12 Bar Blues 12 Bar Blues progressions are a standard song format. They are made up of 12 measures or bars and alternate between 3 chords. There are other variations, but this is the basic format: Chord 1 (the C5) is played for 4 measures Chord 2 (the F5)- for 2 measures Chord 1 again for 2 measures Chord 2 again for 1 measure Chord 3 (the G5) for 1 measure Chord 1 for 2 measures then back to the top. 18
