The iece egins with a somer chorale in the woodwinds, with harmonic language insired y Vincent Persichetti. Ater the rass choir lays the theme, we hear a harsh, dissonant chord ollowed y a silence. Suddenly, the and alternates etween violent chord strikes and a statement o the amiliar hymn tune "Wonderous Love," resented in the octatonic mode (alternation o whole stes and hal stes). There are chord strikes, equaling the numer dead in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, CT. The second variation on "Wonderous Love," rings in syncoated, dance-like rhythms around a statement o the tune in the solo alto saxohone, changing the emotion rom rage to urgency. There is also a rominent solo line in the ongos o 50 strikes, which is the numer killed in the Pulse night clu shooting in Orlando, FL. The inal variation is a collective call to action, in which the ensemle rings together the oening chorale melody, the hymn tune in the truets and tromones, and an energetic, ulsing rhythmic groove which uilds and inally culminates in a old, rilliant and owerul close. Carl Holmquist Aril 01 Carl Holmquist is a cooser, conductor, and music educator, currently in his twelth year as Director o Bands at the H-B Woodlawn Secondary Program in Arlington, VA, where he teaches concert ands, jazz ands, ercussion ensemle and AP music theory and serves as Fine Arts Deartment Chair. He earned a BM in Music Education rom St. Ola College, where he studied conducting and coosition with Timothy Mahr and Steven Amundson. He also earned a MM in Instrumental Conducting rom George Mason University, where he studied with Mark Cahouse and Anthony Maiello. As a cooser, he has written numerous works or concert and, orchestra, chamer ensemles, and vocal ensemles, and has een commissioned y middle school, high school, University and community ensemles across the country. His works have een ulished y C. Alan Pulications, Alred Pulishing, Grand Mesa Music Pulishers and Bandworks Pulications. Holmquist contriuted a chater to Volume o the Coosers on Coosing or Bandseries, edited y Mark Cahouse and ulished y GIA Pulications. He was one o three coosers to articiate in the 00 Young Cooser Mentor Project, sonsored y the National Band Association. He also received irst rize in the 006 Claude T. Smith Memorial Coosition Contest or his work, Play!, which was included in Volume o the Teaching Music Through Perormance in Band series. In addition to his teaching at H-B Woodlawn, he maintains an active schedule serving as guest conductor, cooser and clinician with numerous school, community, and honor ensemles.
