1 Conway Middle School Band Karate The Karate belt system is used in martial arts training to mark the progress a student has made in their study. Similarly, display your proficiency on your instrument by earning belts for Band Karate! You can test for each belt level by scheduling an appointment with Mr. Nichols before or after school. We will do playing tests once a month in class. A completed test includes demonstrating: 1. You know the material, inside and out. 2. You understand the material, and all concepts introduced prior to the material. 3. You can perform the material with 100% accuracy. We will have belt colors for each level of band. Level 1(Karate) Level 2 (Kung-Fu) and Level 3 (Ninja Warrior). Current 7 th & 8 th graders will begin their belts based on where they finished pass offs at the end of last year. For each Level 1, students will receive a belt for their instrument case. Students will earn beads for levels 2 and 3. Some belts in Levels 2 and 3 will warrant an extra prize to go along with receiving the belt. Belt requirements will coincide with some playing tests throughout the school year. Playing grades (40% of term grade) will be based on how many requirements have been completed each term. This is a VERY rough draft of our new playing assessment system. Phase 1 was creating the basic framework and playing requirements for the winds. Phase 2 is creating the percussion requirements. Phase 3 is figuring out what level the 7 th and 8 th graders will grandfathered into. Phase 4 is editing and figuring out the grading system and setting up a way to track the students progress. Phase 5 will be working out the kinks in the system (I plan on doing this at the end of each marking period) When we started pass-off in 1999 or 2000, it took 3 or 4 years to settle in to the system that we used until May of I ask for your patience as we work the bugs out of the system.
