1 Bach Choruses for Feasts and Seasons LENT Aus tiefer Not (from S. 38) Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Continuo realization by Gary Harney Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir, Herr Gott, erhör mein Rufen; Dein gnädig Ohr neig her zu mir Und meiner Bitt sie öffne! Denn so du illt das sehen an, Was Sünd und Unrecht ist getan, Wer kann, Herr, vor dir bleiben Text and Translation From deep affliction I cry out to you, Lord God, hear my call; incline your merciful ear here to me and be open to my prayer! For if you ant to look at this, hat sin and injustice is done, ho can, Lord, remain before you Psalm 130:1-3; paraphrased by Martin Luther (1524) Translation by Francis Brone. Used by permission. Presented by Bach on a Budget
2 Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (from S. 38) The Cantata Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (From deep affliction I cry out to you) is part of Bach s second Leipzig cycle (the so-called chorale cantata cycle of ), receiving its first performance on 29 October 1724, on the Tenty-First Sunday after Trinity. The outer movements use Martin Luther s paraphrase of Psalm 130, hile the inner verses (by an unknon librettist) provide commentary. There is much to admire about this cantata. In addition to the magisterial opening chorus, the ork contains one of only three trios Bach included in his Leipzig cantatas (arguably the best of the three), as ell as a striking beginning to the final chorale. In this case, instead of beginning the chorale ith the tonic e minor chord one ould expect, Bach chose to start ith an E Major seventh chord in 3 rd inversion (D-G#-E-B, from bottom to top)! Further, in addition to the use of the chorale tune in the first and last movements, the melody makes an appearance in the continuo part to the fourth movement recitative - a highly unusual practice. This chorale had long been associated ith the Tenty-First Sunday after Trinity, and it is clear from this cantata that Bach held a special affinity for its possibilities. The Chorus Aus tiefer Not is the primary choral movement of S. 38. It is ritten in the stile antico motet style. (Interestingly, all the motet-style movements of the cycle are based on Luther chorales, as is the case here.) More than simply providing a previe of the chorale phrase to be sung (by sopranos in augmented notes in this movement), the loer three parts take on a life of their on. Indeed, at the beginning one could easily believe there as not going to be a long-note cantus firmus, but rather that hat the loer voices ere presenting as going to the sole melodic material. The chorale is in the Phrygian mode, one hich involves a half-step beteen the first and second notes of the scale. This lends itself to a special tonal quality and suggests the chromaticism Bach employs to especially good effect in measures Throughout, this chorus reveals a master at ork. The Accompaniment All the instruments (except the continuo) are used in this chorus to double the voices. The original instrumentation consisted of trombones, oboes, strings, and continuo. The only colla parte instrumental activity is in the continuo, hich hile it generally matches the bass voice also deviates on occasion, creating an independent fifth voice. For this edition, all doubling has been dispensed ith, and a simple continuo realization for a single manual has been provided. Of course, players are free to create a more elaborate continuo part, if desired.
