Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Highlander s Pride Approx. Time: :40 Carl Strommen Carl Fischer D Major 4/4 quarter note=44.5 This is a march played with short, detached quarter notes. There is a variety of articulations, dynamics, and bowings throughout this piece including accents and ties. There are passages that require both legato and staccato bowing. Pizzacato and arco are both used and there are places where students will play up bow followed by another up bow. The optional tambourine percussion part adds a lot to the character of this piece! 2. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Somerset Overture for Strings Approx. Time: 2:6 James Swearingen Arco/Barnhouse String Publications G Major 4/4 quarter note=2 There is an optional st violin solo that occurs twice in this piece. First violins will use the E string or third position on the A string in some places. This piece contains legato and marcato bowing, accents, slurs, loure bow stroke, fermatas, and caesuras. The Bass and Cello part are exactly the same. 3. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Sky Islands Approx. Time: 2:00 Todd Parrish Highland/Etling G Major 4/4 quarter note=08 Sky Islands has independent parts throughout with staggered entrances. There are melodies and counter melodies for every part. The style is staccato quarter notes contrasted by legato half notes and slurred eighth notes. There are G string notes and E string notes. It can all be played in first position except for the Bass part. 4. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Winds of Change Approx. Time: 2:5 Jeffrey Frizzi Kendor Music Inc. E minor 4/4 quarter note=2.5 This is an exciting piece that uses both legato and staccato bowing. Melodies are spread throughout all sections of the orchestra so that everyone gets a turn! There are accidental C# s and lifts. This is a good teaching piece for bow placement within various articulations. 5. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Contemplation Approx. Time: 2:53 Larry Clark Carl Fischer D Major 4/4 quarter note= 80/24.5 Violin 2/Viola parts are doubled. Cello/Bass parts are doubled almost the entire way through and Violin is an independent part. This piece is great for teaching young musicians phrasing and how to produce a good tone. There are simple notes and rhythms throughout and students can learn how to truly make musical lines. There is a combination of arco and pizz and there is a tempo change in the middle.

Time: :40 Doug Spata Highland/Etling G Major 2/2 half note=00.5 This is a heroic sounding piece in cut time. Technical demands include slurs, repeats, endings and string crossings. There is staccato and legato bowing. Every time the melody comes around, two of the sections will have it together, and they are not always two sections of the orchestra you would expect to have the melody together. The way this piece is constructed will help kids listen across the orchestra. 7. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Sleigh Ride in the Park Approx. Time: 2:00 Chris Thomas FJH Music Company Inc. G Major 4/4 half note=90 This is a fun holiday tune in a fast four that should be conducted and felt in two. It has both a bells part and jingle bells part (these add a lot to this festive piece!). Legato melodies are passed around so that everyone gets to play a melody at some point. There are some accidental C# s and accents with a lift at the end for all. Cello and Bass parts are doubled for the entire piece and Violin 2/Viola parts are doubled for half of the piece. It is lively and cute tune for a holiday program. 8. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Patriotic Salute (4 Patriotic Pieces) Approx. Time: 6:30 Samuel A. Ward Arr. Timothy J. Isham Kendor Music Inc. D Major/G Major/ D Major 4/4, 3/4, 2/2 quarter note=84 half note=00 quarter note=76 This is an arrangement of four recognizable patriotic pieces: America, The Beautiful, My Country Tis Of Thee, You re a Grand Old Flag, and The Star Spangled Banner. You can perform the entire work, or it would sound fine if you chose to only do two or even one of the pieces. Each piece ends with a complete break or a fermata. There are key changes and meter changes between each new patriotic piece. Violas will have high 3 s on the G string, Cellos will have extensions, and Bass will play in half position. 9. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Arco-ology Approx. Time: :8 Joseph Compello Carl Fischer D Major 2/4 quarter note= This is a great piece for beginner students to get them playing with more bow as well as developing their tone. Rhythms include quarter notes and half notes. Violin 2 and Viola parts are doubled. Cello and Bass parts are doubled. This a piece that will help reinforce crescendos and dynamics. It will teach students how to balance the melody and harmony. 0. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Zombie Dance Approx. Time: :45 Michael Story Belwin E minor 4/4 quarter note=34.5 There are optional percussion parts that add a fun layer! This is an enjoyable piece that will help teach students to count rests. Technical demands include rests, starting up bow after rests, D.S. al Coda, and shifting for Bass. The notes are mainly on the D, A, and G strings and there are accents at the very end.

Time: 3:2 Bud Woodruff Carl Fischer D Major 4/4 quarter note= This is a very well written, slower piece for young musicians. It begins and ends with an optional bass solo that goes up to an E on the G string. This piece has simple phrases, lifts, slurs, and a wide range of dynamics. Students can do a lot with this musically. Everyone gets a chance to play the beautiful melody (yes, even the basses!!). There is a down, down bowing with staccato and legato markings in the melody. If you have an all-star bassist or bass section, this piece will feature them!. 2. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Three Tchaikovsky Themes Approx. Time: :45 Pyotr IIyich Tchaikovsky Arr. Douglas E. Wagner Belwin E minor/g Major 4/4 quarter note=52 This arrangement features recognizable excerpts from Symphony No.4, The Nutcracker Suite, and 82 Overture and is very playable by young musicians. It begins in E minor and changes to G Major. There are lots of G string notes for Violin 2 and Viola. There is melody in the st Violin the entire way through. The Cello and Bass parts are exactly the same and Bass shifts for only one note. 3. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Coronation of the Queen Approx. Time: 2:5 Susan H. Day Highland/Etling C Major/G Major/C Major 4/4 quarter note=20.5 This piece reinforces F natural and C natural. The rhythm quarter eighth eighth half is found throughout in all parts. It begins in C Major, changes to G Major, and then goes back to C Major. There are many dotted half notes in this piece and there is tremolo at the end. Violin 2 and Viola double a lot of the time especially in rhythm. There is divisi in the cello part. Violas have a couple of notes on the C string and Cellos have some as well. 4. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade A Mozart Allegro Approx. Time: :50 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart/Carrie Lane Gruselle FJH Music Company Inc. C Major 4/4 quarter note=32.5 Originally composed in the key of Bb major by Mozart, this popular melody is arranged here in C major for young string players. It begins with a pick up note and is a good teaching piece for a light, separated style. Emphasis should be placed on the first note of two slurred notes. There are simple phrases and contrasting dynamics throughout. Articulations include legato, staccato, and slurs. There are some accidental F# s and C# s. Violin 2 and Viola parts are identical to each other. Cello and Bass parts are also doubled. Violin has an independent part. This arrangement can be played in first position for all instruments. 5. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Viennese Waltz Approx. Time: 2:20 Eugenia Goldman Soundwave Music D Major 3/4 quarter note=60.5 This is a waltz based on a D Major scale with a few arpeggios. It will teach young string players a strong sense of beat in triple meter. The Violin section is showcased throughout. Violin and Cello are the only parts that get the melody. Violin 2, Viola, and Bass are the accompaniment. Articulations include legato and staccato. There are caesuras, rallentandos and an a tempo.

Day Grand Mesa Music Publishers D Major 4/4 quarter note=44 This is a piece based on a D Major scale and includes rhythms using quarter, half, dotted half and whole notes. There are no eighth notes. This is a good piece to teach students how to start on an up bow while making and maintaining a good, strong tone. Violin 2 and Viola parts double each other. There is some divisi in all parts except Bass. The rhythm quarter half quarter is seen throughout. There are lifts, rit., and a tempos. The dynamics are mezzo forte and forte for the entire piece. There is an optional piano part included. 7. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Edge of the Horizon Approx. Time: 2:00 Jeremy Woolstenhulme Kjos Music D Major 4/4 quarter note=08-6 This piece reinforces everything learned from the first year of instruction. It is based on a D Major scale and is a good teaching piece for bow weight, bow distribution, bow placement, bow speed, and musicality. Dynamics and hairpins play a big role in this piece. There are lots of skips in thirds throughout. Some technical demands include lifts and smooth martele bowing. There is one Violin part. The Violin 2 part is the same as the Viola and the Cello and Bass parts are similar but not exactly the same. 8. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Air of Nobility Approx. Time: :42 James Swearingen Arco/Barnhouse String Publications G Major 4/4 quarter note=08 It begins with a fanfare and is maestoso. This would be a good opener for a program. Articulations and technical demands include accents, bow lifts, slurs, hooked bows, marcato bowing, and legato bowing. There are unison rhythms at the beginning and at the end. Violin 2 gets a melody and so does the Cello and Violin. 9. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade In Grandfather s Arms Approx. Time: 3:8 James Meredith Carl Fischer G Major 3/4 quarter note=84.5 This piece is in triple meter and should be played at a moderate tempo. It features the viola section and low strings in the melody. There is cello shifting and accidental F naturals. The articulation is smooth, legato bowing. There are slurs over three notes or two. This is a good piece to teach bow distribution within slurs, musical phrasing, and dynamics. There are moving lines in all parts and this is a piece that will help students develop a mature tone. There is an optional cello solo and optional Violin solo. The Violin part can be played in first position or challenge them to play in third. There is both pizzicato and arco.

Time: :24 Adrian Gordon Leap Year Music D Major 4/4 quarter note=0 There is a sleigh bell part that consists of constant quarter notes. I would highly recommend someone play the part because it will help keep the piece steady and adds a fun layer! Dynamics of this piece help illustrate the stages of a child waking up on Christmas morning and the excitement that ensues. The style is legato and there are a lot of unison rhythms across the sections of the orchestra. The Cello and Bass parts are identical. There is both arco and pizz throughout and Violin has left hand pizz at the end. 2. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Mixolydian Rock Approx. Time: :5 J. Cameron Law Grand Mesa Music Publishers D Mixolydian 4/4 quarter note=20 This piece sounds bluesy and is written in the Mixolydian mode with the lowered 7 th being C natural. It has an optional drum set part that adds a fun, rock layer. This is a good teaching piece for full bows, accents, building finger dexterity, and emphasizing C natural. Basses are in third position the entire time. The Violin 2 and Viola parts are doubled most of the time while the Cello and Bass parts are doubled the entire time. The upper strings are in unison from the beginning through measure 6 and everyone has staggered entrances at the end. 22. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Journey Approx. Time: 2:4 Eugenia Goldman Soudwave Music E minor 4/4 quarter note=20 2 There is a tambourine, snare drum, triangle/cymbals part. This upbeat piece requires a variety of finger patterns and bow strokes. There are slurs in the middle section for the middle voices with arpeggiated passages. Violas will play on the C string. Everyone gets the melody except for the Bass. The dynamics range from mezzo piano through forte. The rhythm dotted quarter eighth is very prominent in this piece. It ends with unison rhythms. 23. Title Composer/Arranger Publisher Key Signature Time Signature Grade Questions & Answers Approx. Time: 2:30 William E. Moats Tempo Press G Major 4/4 quarter note=00 This is in G Major and can be played all in first position. There are many Down, Down bowings. There is a contrast between legato quarter notes and staccato eighth notes. You will hear back and forth question and answer phrases between Violin, Violin 2, and Viola. There is a D# accidental in the Violin 2 and Cello part. Technical demands in this piece include slurs, ties, along with starting up bow on many measures. There are a lot of unison rhythms between the Violin 2 and Viola parts. The Cello and Bass part are very similar.

Time: 2:0 Chris Thomas Wingert Jones Publications E minor 4/4 quarter note=42 Heavy, marcato bowing is used in this piece. The melody is passed around to every section and there is G string work for the 2 nd Violin and Viola parts. The st Violin part plays on the E string some of the time. There is tremolo, accents, and bass shifting. This piece uses only notes in the G and D Major scales and can be played all in first position except for the Bass part. Bass and Cello parts are doubled. This is an enjoyable piece with dynamic contrasts, warrior cries, and an optional percussion part.
