3 President's Message Hi PSCC Members, We have just had our 2018 Year End Banquet with a very tasty dinner and many members being honored with service and photography awards. Officers were elected and Kelsey Barnes, a University of Washington student in Museum Studies, provided a program about the photography of former members Paul and Shirley Kovac. If you missed the banquet this year, I hope you can attend next year. Election of officers for several positions included: Margery Robison for President, Jack Broom as Vice President, Chris Currie as Print Director, and Henry Heerschap for a second two-year term as Member-at Large. To facilitate recruitment of new officers and to meet requests for more education, the Board has restructured the Vice President's job to have it focused on educational programs while Henry Heerschap, in his Member-at-Large position, will take on planning and advertising field trips. Please think about volunteering to be on the new Field Trip Committee to work with Henry. The digital, print and photo journalism awards given out for our amazing photos are listed elsewhere in this newsletter. As your newly elected President, I'd like to tell you a little more about myself. I have been a member of PSCC since April 2014 and Vice President for one year. I was introduced to photography during childhood as my father and both grandfathers were active amateur photographers. I loved helping Dad in the darkroom and learned about light meters and f-stops early on. Didn't make it easy when my friends with Brownie cameras were getting better photos, but now I'm ever so grateful for that start. Photography as a hobby came and went over the years while family and career responsibilities were taken on. Currently I enjoy landscape, macro, and night photography. As club VP this past year, I've had an opportunity see what is involved in keeping the organization operating and enjoyed getting to know other officers and club members better. Even with this experience, the presidential role will be new and I'll greatly appreciate all of your patience, assistance and good wishes. Finally, I'd like to personally thank Lauren Heerschap for her enthusiastic and capable leadership as President the past four years and hope to continue at her high level. Following a very successful field trip to Dunn Gardens in May we are taking a bit of a break from formal field trips for the summer. If you have the urge to help plan one during this time, please contact Henry Heerschap at henry@heerschap.com. Our next social event will be the Annual Ice Cream Social on Digital Night, August 13. Be sure to bring your favorite topping and the Board will provide the ice cream. 5 2018 PSCC Year End Banquet and Awards Another great PSCC party commemorating great photography and good friends, not to mention delicious food. We elected Margery Robison as President, Jack Broom as Vice President, and Chris Currie as Print Director. Henry Heerschap agreed to stand for reelection as Member-at-Large. Dave Patzwald (Digital Director), Mary Tevis (Secretary) and Yvonne Shimek (Treasurer) will continue in their positions. Big thanks to Lauren Heerschap and Al Koskie for their contributions to the club. UW Museum Studies graduate Kelsey Barnes put on a wonderful presentation featuring the work of late PSCC members Paul and Shirley Kovac, putting their work together in the context of the Seven Elements of Art. She presented us with examples of Paul s printed black and white work as well as a slideshow of Shirley s Crystal Photography. Kelsey also made available money to fund a new award for 2019: the Paul and Shirley Kovac Creativity Award for uniquely creative work by PSCC members. Kelsey was presented with a card signed by members present as well as a print of one of Shirley s crystal photographs. Outgoing President Lauren Heerschap presented the Lucille Ainsworth Service Award to incoming President Margery Robison for Margie s great work as Vice President, putting together wonderful education events and field trips. The George Ferrara Mentor award went to Bill Ray for his education efforts, both inside the club and beyond. See the next page for the winners of the Print, Digital, and Photojournalism Awards. 5

7 Upcoming Events Education Night July 30 Maplewood Presbyterian Church 7 to 9 PM. What s in Your Image with Bill Royce Join Puget Sound Camera Club for an exciting and informative evening of learning more about image analysis and several new techniques available in Lightroom Classic CC and Photoshop CC taught by our own award-winning member Bill Royce. Bill has recently become certified by PSA as an Instructor of Image Analysis and has great skill using Lightroom and Photoshop. One of the exciting topics he will cover is ways of fixing boring skies. For this demonstration, Bill needs a few images (reasonably high quality JPG) with boring sky. So bring one on a thumb drive if you wish. Several will be selected to fix. The meeting will be held at Maplewood Presbyterian Church, th Ave W, Edmonds, We will be taking free-will contributions of $5 from each attendee to help offset the costs of future education nights. For examples of Bill s photographic art, see Useful Web Links Digital Asset Management guru Peter Krogh has a very interesting system for digitizing old photos using a DSLR (or mirrorless camera) and Lightroom. He sells a whole course on his techniques, but has an excellent summary in this video recorded at B&H Photo in New York City. He worked this out while digitizing his own family archive. Well worth watching all the way through if you re considering doing this yourself. There are lots of great resources on landscape photography on the web, dealing with technical issues, gear, and the rest. Creativity is an area that can always use more emphasis. That s covered in the article Five Advanced Landscape Photography Tips by photographer Spencer Cox. Another creative tool is the notion of conceptual contrast. Instead of contrasting colors or tones, you look for contrasting subjects. Wet and dry, soft and rough, hot and cold are all examples. Here s a good article on the subject: 7
