1 DPIC - SUNDAY 10TH FEBRUARY 2019 Contrary to what usually happens when photographers in the South West congregate in a darkened room for the whole day - the SUN DID NOT SHINE! Instead, we were treated to strong winds and rain! Perfect. Perhaps that s why the hall was even more packed than I remembered it from years gone by? Judged by three skilled National PAGB judges - Gwen and Phil Charnock (who both hold an FRPS and an MFIAP) from Wigan in Lancashire and Peter Young (LRPS CPAGB APAGB AFIAP) who hails from Blaina in nearby Wales, all coped well with the 1,026 image entry with practiced efficiency. Let the judging begin! Left to right - Gwen Charnock, Phil Charnock and Peter Young. Some attendees, who may be more used to the average camera club judge deliberating over an average competition entry before arriving at their decisions, may be forgiven for wondering how such a large entry could be assessed so apparently quickly. Please bear in mind that judges of this calibre regularly judge Salons and other National and International competitions - some with much larger entry numbers. These people are highly skilled at assessing images quickly and expertly. So be assured, every image was afforded a high degree of scrutiny when displayed, before being scored. Some comments have been made expressing a wish for feedback which would not only be appreciated - but important. A competition at this standard is not where pointers to where an image could be improved - or why it failed to gain a higher mark - can be made. Time pressure is one reason - but more importantly, if you d like this sort of feedback on your work - maybe you should consider attending an Appraisals Day, organised throughout the year by the PAGB within their various Federations?

2 The forthcoming Photography Show at the NEC is another good source of advice and guidance on your work - and Fotospeed run regular Print Workshops with well known photographers, who will dedicate time to helping you. It all costs money, of course, but if you REALLY want to improve your work - there are so many ways to go about achieving this - but certainly its NOT by expecting a hard pressed judge at these competitions, to be able to offer individual advice or feedback. However, with the above thoughts in mind, I like to ask our judges during the lunch break for their thoughts on the day - and for their opinion on the standard of photography in our Federation. Without exception, all were full of praise for the superb organisation and the welcome they received. The room had been well blacked out, so important for digitally projected image competitions. The projection was easy to see by all in the packed room due to the very large screen, and calibrated projector. On the whole, all images seen on the day were of a very high standard - but there was a word of caution! A low score may have been made because processing let it down. Creative images were another instance where care and thought needed to be employed. Even though an image may be creative, to be totally successful, it still needs to have a degree of believability. Surprise was expressed at the relatively low number of sports entries. At National and International level, judges are used to seeing a much higher number of these - but when there were sports images, they were of a very good standard. The Nature category was a really strong entry with an extremely high standard. Like the proverbial swans - the backroom boys and girls all appeared calm, serene and in control - but sometimes paddled a bit! New kid on the block - Alex Hamer seen here backing up the back-

Grateful thanks to all who kindly donated - especially from the lucky winners! During his introductory speech, President Ian Bateman had some exciting news to pass on! At the AGM back in October, the idea was raised of starting a WCPF Print Competition for clubs. It was envisaged that it would follow a similar format to that of DPIC. At the moment, the Federation does not have a formal method for selecting the two clubs to go forward to represent the WCPF at the PAGB Print Championships in Blackburn, and the new competition would allow for this. Ian was very pleased to announce that a team from Dorchester Camera Club have volunteered to run this new event, with the first one taking place on 11th August 2019 in Dorchester. Helen and Stephen Jones are heading up the team, and will be sending out an to all clubs soon. So - keep an eye open for this. Ian also mentioned the forthcoming Judging Seminar, organised by John Tilsley, and due to be held at the Judith Teller Centre, Exmouth in April. At the time of speaking, there was only one place left! However, there may be the possibility of reserve places to allow for absences for various reasons.
