CLAY BLACKMORE S POSING GUIDE BROUGHT TO YOU BY:
Clay Blackmore, a Canon Explorer of Light, is recognized as a leading portrait and event photographer. Many professional photographers follow his tips on creating beautiful portraits and wedding images that make a lasting impression and sell. Use his posing, lighting and camera angle strategies, to create and master the craft of portrait and event photography.
#2 Studio Hasselblad camera and 150mm portrait lens #1 Indoors, Budapest Canon Mark III and lens The exposure was f 8 at 1/8th of a second. The camera position is profile and the camera height is at waist level to capture the elegance of the bride with no distortion. I first picked the background which was not the church alter, rather the entrance of the church, showing a less cluttered view of the cathedral. Once I had determined the exposure and color balance for the scene I carefully placed the subject into the composition. The three Quantum Q flashes had 85 b gels to correct the daylight balanced strobes to the existing tungsten, fluorescent mix. I placed the main light in a back 45-degree position giving me my favorite loop lighting on the face. A second strobe was placed behind my camera slightly to left of center as a fill light 2 f stops less than the main light. And finally a backlight was positioned to illuminate her veil, pointing towards the lens of the camera. This image is the first portrait I made in my new studio, thus the affection of seeing it in this set of images. I am always looking for ideas and I found a book a cover created by Robert Freeman of the Beatles. I decided I would use that as my direction and inspiration. After carefully studying the portrait I realized that the Fab Four were photographed individually and composited together. Using Ilford black and white film, I created individual portraits of each person, using one Profoto strobe and a reflector. Then, we scanned the negatives and built the final image. It is the only way that the light could be consistent across all four faces.
#3 Outdoors Canon Mark III and the lens Playing around with engagement couples is a constant assignment around the studio. I always start with the familiar utilizing the best poses for the couple. Once we have exhausted many of the poses in my wheelhouse, I look for unusual angles like this one. The couple is seated on the edge of a dock looking out into their future. The high camera angle placed them in the reflection of the water. It was a cold clear morning creating the mirror like reflection. #4 Outdoors Canon Mark III and a L lens This family portrait has everything going for it and is exactly what I am looking for when I go outside. The first thing you see is that the background is non descript and recedes with cool tones of green and blue. The family is in the shade at the edge of the trees creating soft light on their faces and nice directional hair light coming in from the setting sun. A Quantum Q flash is placed to left of the camera and is carefully adjusted to one f stop less than the ambient light.
#5 Outdoors Canon 1DS mark III converted to infrared, with a 14 mm lens This image might be my favorite of all time. This couple was married the day before so they were ready to have fun, no stress of the wedding to day to hold us back. As I went low the sun hoisted the veil above their heads. I went to my knees and shot the image from underneath the veil. A strong Quantum Q flash is just to camera right at full power to keep up with the noon day sun. The exposure was 125 at f 16. #6 Onstage Canon Mark III with a 50 mm 1.2 at 1.4 This image was made while working live on stage in front of an audience. I have simply covered a sheet of plexi glass with glitter and suspended it above the face of my subject, Min Young. Using the modeling lights of the strobes allowed me to work at a shallow depth of field creating the three dimensional effect with the only a portion of the image that is in focus, the mask of her face.
#7 Outdoors, Sunrise in Paris Canon 5d classic converted to infrared with a f4 lens #8 The model was lifted on top of a wall to give her the illusion of mirroring the Eifel tower. The sun is directly behind her back. I used an infrared camera with no flash to create the silhouette. Outdoors Canon 5D camera and lens A real wedding with 24 inches of snow! I love the energy of this image and the memories of the giant snowstorm on the wedding day are unforgettable. The image is made using the Canon 580 flash system with the new pocket wizards to set the flashes remotely from camera. I had one flash on camera and an assistant place one flash in a back 45-degree position to illuminate the umbrellas.
#9 Studio Canon Mark III L Lens During a recent class at our studio we built a white box out of spandex large enough to place the subject inside. Once the model was ready to step inside the rest was easy as the lighting was soft, shadow-less and all natural. #10 Outdoors ID Mark 4 and a f 2.8 lens During a fall day I found this area on a golf course to place the bride and groom for a dramatic photograph on their wedding day. Posing the bride in the 2/3 view of her face, with the groom in profile I was careful to keep the shoulders at 35 to 45 degree for each subject to show the bridal clothes.
#12 Outdoors Canon 1D Mark lens Wedding Party marching up Pennsylvania Avenue is a winner. With the setting sun at my back the image is all available light. We timed the image just right with the one-way traffic. Once the light turned red, we all jumped out in the middle of the street and marched up the street. #11 Outdoors, Canon 5d classic converted to infrared with a f4 lens I am really in love with the infrared images from several of the weddings and this is a favorite. After posing many pictures of the couple, I asked them to walk around the lake while I made 20 to 30 images, looking for that one natural moment where it all seemed to come together. #13 Indoors Canon Mark III with L lens at 800 ISO During the first dance of the bridal couple I took a high camera angel from the stage that the band was performing on to capture the shot of the night. When he picked her up and swung her around we were there with three Q flashes illuminating the scene to show detail in the crowd just behind them helping to capture a stunning moment from the wedding.
#14 Outdoors Canon 5d Infrared ISO at f 11 During the wedding day we stopped at the Washington DC Monuments for this amazing image. Using a 15 mm fish eye lens on the 5d Mark III to capture the expanse of the interior of the DC War Memorial I placed a bare bulb flash right over the lens to illuminate the scene evenly. #15 Outdoors Canon 5d Mark III hand-held at 10,000 ISO This image is made at night time and I never thought that it would be possible. However, this is one of my favorite images from the entire wedding. The headlights of a car illuminated the dress at the last second, giving me the title for this image, Auto Exposure.
About PICSERA Picsera is a passionate team of digital imaging artists and technology innovators assisting photographers by streamlining their entire post production workflow. We enable professional photographers with more personal time and more profitability. Photographers had an old adage, If you re in the darkroom you re not making money, now it s If you re at the computer!, said Blackmore By choosing a post-production service provider photographers can delegate the more mundane tasks like culling, color correction and album making and at the same time can deliver faster, increase their suite of offerings, and perfect their unique craft. Every photographer has to work with technology, but they don t need to master every aspect to be successful. Today s imaging programs such as Photoshop and Lightroom are very advanced and can take years to master. Photographers should take advantage of the capabilities these tools offer, but they should maximize their time by delegating image enhancement activities to experts who have experience with the latest and greatest imaging software available on the market. Running a business is a balancing act. At my studio I have had ten different employees over the past couple years and each person has their own way of doing things, Blackmore said. With Picsera we ll have a new standard of production that is streamlined. Picsera offers photographers a wide range of post-production services that are available as a complete bundle or on an individual a la carte basis.
