VIEWS October Issue 2014 Mid-Southern Watercolorists, Inc. President s Message Share... What do you think about when you hear the word share? Many of you immediately think of share associated with Facebook. That s what we do when we see something really cool that we want to tell our friends about. It s sort of like the show and tell that we did in elementary school. For some of the non-facebook types, you may first associate the word share with what we were taught at a very young age to do share our toys, share our food, or share our clothes with a younger brother or sister. We passed it on. We also learned at a young age that sharing helped someone. For the leaders of our MSW mini-workshops, sharing means spending a day without any compensation to share techniques or ideas with eager watercolorists or new painters. For those of you who provide a demo at one of our monthly program meetings, like long time watercolorist and teacher Jacqui Kaucher did at our last meeting, sharing means showing others different ways to paint watercolor. Wasn t it cool when we learned last month about negative painting and painting watercolor on tissue paper? MSW provides a way to share ideas with other watercolorists when we get together to paint or just to talk, as artists. We learn about the simple things: like other kinds of paints or other kinds of brushes to try out. We learn about things we never may have thought of on our own, like painting with a credit card! There are many ways we can share MSW with others who enjoy, support or are just learning about watercolor. Share MSW on Facebook, talk about it with your friends and fellow artists, share the new Facebook page Catalyst for Creativity with other watercolorists, bring a young artist to our meeting or tell someone about our meetings, give someone one of the new membership brochures the list of possibilities goes on and on... Take a moment to think back on what brought you to Mid-Southern Watercolorists? In thinking back I recall it was because someone shared MSW with me, told me about it, and made me feel welcome at the first meeting that I attended all by myself. How will you share MSW?

Arkansas Art Education Association Convention November 6th and 7 th MSW will be doing two days of 50 minute demonstrations at the convention. This is in line with our desire to support and encourage teachers to teach watercolors in the art classroom...successfully. We plan to hand out "bare-bones" step-by-step outlinetype lesson plans for elementary, middle and high schools. Since we have members who are teachers they probably have one or two highly successful projects that we could write up and share. All they have to do is get the lesson to me, Barbara Rhodes, in writing or by phone ( ) and I will co-ordinate the handouts. If we have members who would like to demonstrate a technique or one of the handed out lessons, contact me. It would work out great if we have at least 3 members demonstrating and 2 handing out lesson plans and membership forms. If we have a 50 minute collection of 3 quick mini demonstrations with examples of finished products we will keep the interest up and make it fun for all. Samples Legion is donating Yupo paper for our members to try. Come to the meeting in November meeting to receive a sample of the Yupo paper." Board Meeting Bulletin Held on September 17, No items were moved or passed at this meeting. 2. Officer s reports reminded us to ask for volunteers for the November Art Educator s meeting. ARCHIVES Many of you may have objects pertaining to MSW at your home or studio that you would like to find a home for. Doris Mapes established an archive at UCA many years ago, and we would like to begin to fill that archive with more recent information. If YOU have anything you would like to give, bring it to any of our meetings and you will find a container there to put it in. Suzann Waggoner, our archivist, will gather them and deliver them to the university. Objects we can think of are catalogs, newspaper clippings, news announcements, photographs, etc. Exhibitions for 2014/ Special Juried Members Exhibition October 10 December 28, 2014 Christ Episcopal Church Juror: Barclay McConnell ******* 45th Annual Juried Exhibition February 13 April 12, 2015 Arkansas Arts Center Deadline: September 1, 2014 Awards Reception February 20, 2015 Juror: Linda Baker ******* Open Members Exhibition October 2015 Cox Center 3. All other committee heads reported on status of their area, nothing new.

September Meeting Demo by Jacqui Kaucher Jacqui provided 3 pearls of wisdom: Never put your watercolor palette on the roof of your car. Always take your (cut up) credit card with you to paint. Secure your acrylic tube lids with tape. (One can only imagine how these pearls came to be!) The demo in the words of one of our members: Take gloss or matte medium, put on one side of torn pieces of tissue and stick onto 140 pound Fabriano. Use a big brush to paint with as long as you can. A double pointed brush is easy to use since it is less to carry. She also uses the Goliath brush. Choice of yellow is painted on small areas spaced around the page, now turquoise is added be sure to leave white areas. Now allow texture to happen. Next pick pink, allowing them to mix with the other colors on the page when you spritz water in small areas. Purple begins to happen. Now get a dark wash Derwetts pencil to find the subjects - some lillies and lilly pads. Leave these areas alone and use a hair drier to dry some of the areas. Splash some areas with fingers dipped in water. Now paint splashes of color on the page. Softly add layers of paint around the lillies. Keep an abstract formation of the subject. Sprinkle on some salt in the wet areas of paint. In the foreground add lines for the reflection pool area. Use some water soluble color pencils. Value markers are good to carry outside to sketch on trips. Cynthia Schanink An example Jacqui brought from home

Mini Workshop Conducted by Caren Garner: Fall Colors Some of the paintings in process produced. These were examples of her work. And provided lots of inspiration and choices! A colorful day!!!!

Nine sketchbook paged were reproduced, and writer Kirk Montgomery told about the adventure of David's 13 day walk along this beautiful trail astride the Arkansas River in Little Rock and North Little Rock. The state-wide exposure of this newspaper story is sure to encourage more people to also explore this beautiful trail, and to try watercolor as a portable, sketching medium. Also a series of Central Arkansas landscapes of the Arkansas River, Pinnacle Mountain, Woods, forests, fields and barns are now being offered for sale by David at Carmen's Art and Antiques, 1022 Oak Street in Conway. This is the first time David has offered his watercolors for sale through a gallery. All works are matted, but unframed, to enable purchasers to pay a reasonable price for an Arkansas memory. ********** Venice Plein Air Watercolor Workshop (June 14-20, 2015) to be conducted by Marlene Gremillion! The Language of Art (This comes from a deck of cards recently purchased at the Cleveland Museum of Art, copyright Dona Budd) Gothic Named for the Goths who razed the Roman Empire, this term was used by Italians to refer to art and architecture of northern Europe between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries because they thought it crude. After the Romanesque period, emotional and preoccupied with sin, the Gothic spirit celebrated the joys of earth and glories of heaven, a spirit spectacularly demonstrated by the soaring pointed arches and the sculpture of Chartres s Cathedral (thirteenth century). The Ancestors of Christ adorning the west portal, in their schematic procession and formulaic arrangement of drapery, reflect the period s passion for iconography and complex systems of order, while the realistic and individualized faces of these figures incorporate a pleasure in and regard for life in God s daily world. The period also produced high art in the form of tapestries (The Apocalypse, , is singularly splendid), illuminated manuscripts (Tres Riches Heures, , is a magnificent example), and stained glass (Chartres s rose window is wondrous).
