1 It took me years to figure out that the stamps didn't have to all go on the front - that some could be put on the back too so as not to cover the entire painting! The backpack: I pack all the art supplies in my small back pack. I balance the metal box and paper block on my knees when I sit on the curb, a step, or the street or on the ground. Sometimes I stand or lean. I pack paper towels along with plastic containers of water. I will purchase a couple of bottled waters, drink them, and then use my knife's scissors to cut them and use their bottoms as containers. I have been known to forget the paper towels; in that case I take some extra paper napkins from a restaurant or a roll of toilet paper from the room. I figure it all goes for a good cause! President s Message The Practical Side of Painting Postcards While David Cook and I were on a "plein air" venture, he suggested I write about what I do when I paint and mail back postcards from those far off locations. So here goes. Suitcase: I pack everything I use in my one checked bag. I mark the metal case of the supplies as Art Stuff. I buy the 7x 10 watercolor paper blocks by Aquarelle and pack them - one hot and one cold press. One time I found a note the bag had been inspected - I hope they found my metal case, opened it and learned that it was indeed filled with art stuff! Metal box with art supplies: The brushes, paint tubes ( it holds several), pencils, pens and Swiss army knife (a must) go into in a small (8 x10) metal case. This box was designed and sold for the purpose of taking a few art supplies. It includes a nice little tray that fits over the other things and is a palette. 8 inch x 10 inch Aquarelle by Arches watercolor blocks: They are 7" x 10," the size various post offices like, do not cost too much to mail, and they are a nice size and the correct paper weight to do a painting on. The local post office: I wait until all paintings are complete and ready to be mailed. Usually it's a chore to find the post office (they're disappearing learned nowadays). The personnel are great for the most part. They usually speak in their own language. We have some phrases to try to explain what we are trying to mail. After we place the stamps, they postmark and mail the postcards. Then It's up to the mail gods! Once I mailed three postcard paintings in a mail box without stamps and they were lost forever! This process and the post office stories are all on my web site, postcard-art-gallery.com.
