1 one of the reasons that I started to paint watercolor myself. My junior high art teacher showed us a film about John Marin, painting himself, and I never forgot it. Shortly thereafter, I painted an abstract landscape watercolor with wax resist, while I was still in junior high. It was one of the paintings selected from Wichita, Kansas art students to travel in an exhibition to New York. I still remember watching that film to this day. President s Message What is your earliest memory of watercolor? I am so excited when I see very young visitors at our MSW meetings. They are special young artists, and I think that they should have front row seating. I guess that s because my earliest recollection of becoming interested in watercolor is not in college, as an adult, or after retirement; rather, I remember being amazed at how the water and paint mixed together on paper at a very early age. My earliest memory is when my mother took me to an art demonstration at Hutchinson Junior College when I could barely see to the bottom of some painter s easel. The person doing the demonstration was mixing water and paint together on paper. My mother later lost me at that demonstration, because I went back to watch my eyes were eye level with the paper and I loved watching the way the red and browns and blues all ran together as he passed his brush, that was full of water, over the paper. It is ironic that the Arkansas Arts Center recently acquired 290 watercolors and drawings from his estate, making it the second largest repository of his drawings and paintings in the world. The Arts Center is currently planning a major exhibition of Marin s works, tentatively scheduled for some time in 2016 or I m anxious to see this exhibition! In both of the instances above, I m sure that these artists, individuals, and teachers have no idea to this day of how they influenced me today as a painter of watercolors. So I hope that you will try to bring visitors to MSW demonstrations, of all ages and walks of life! Who knows how we and MSW will influence the artists of tomorrow. What does not impede is the knowledge that others are and have been on the same path. While our stars may not, for the time being, shine as bright as Monet s or Georgia O Keefe s, we are nevertheless of the sisterhood and brotherhood. We re not alone. [Robert Genn, Painterskeys.com] Jeannie Fry President, Mid-Southern Watercolorists Later, I was influenced by John Marin, an early American modernist, also at an early age. It is

Box Little Rock, AR Thank you, Peyton Bishop and Mary Anne Garnett THERE ARE MORE THAN PEOPLE out there than those NAMED CLINTON OR BUSH! Our MSW nominating committee has been given the task to assemble a list of nominees for President-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer for the year by March 1, Each of these positions serve one-year terms, as outlined in our By-laws. This year s Nominations Committee consists of three Past Presidents: Marlene Gremillion, Selma Blackburn, and Reita Miller. If you would like to volunteer for one of these three Board positions or would like to nominate someone to serve in one of these three Board positions, please contact a member of the nominating committee. As Barbara Bush once stated, Surely there are more people than people named Clinton and Bush out there who can serve!

3 WHY DID YOU PAINT THIS? ANNE LYON First off...my name is Lyon, and I've been painting, drawing and collecting lions for a very long time now, alongside my sister and brother. We have amassed quite a few! I've been given gifts of lions as well, and this gift was a lion door knocker, which I had placed on my patio iron table one day to put up outside. I was sitting there just looking at it, then got my camera and played with the composition. I then proceeded to try to discover the perfect grey or greyish color in which to paint, and after much experimentation... this is the result! SANDRA MARSON Painting is a creative expression, I know the principles and elements of design. I follow my intuition, l paint bold and free. I chose not to imitate but to create. GEORGE WITTENBERG " Lion-comes-a-knockin!" I did this early postcard when we took our daughter on her first trip to France. I like this image. I did it because I LOVED this building, its history and its setting. Of course we sat on the wall at dusk and watched boaters floating the river with their kerosene lamps! I never forgot that scene. It comes from sitting a while in front of a building or a scene and putting it down on paper. I was mailing these drawings back as "postcards" as an experiment and because I liked the results - the stamps (which I have always loved), the postmark and the recording of the moment. The Morocco Rooftop "postcard" was done for the same reasons! On that trip I was involved with MSW and was learning how

4 to put more color and paint down on the paper. This image as compared to the last one is more of a "painting". The earlier "postcard" is more of an Illustration with paint added to it. I show these two for historic reasons: for you to see the growth and the application of watercolor. Which one do you like better? Hmmmm...!
