1 Newsletter April 2019 Dear APS members, From the President Happy Burst-of-Spring week! We are surrounded by the glorious colors and fragrances we longed for during winter. This time of the year is the perfect muse for pastelists and Plein Air(ists!). Color is the APS educational theme this year. We had an excellent program at our last meeting given by painter, colorist and educator, Susan Chambers. This will be followed by other stimulating programs and workshops for our APS members. April 27th, Susan Hurst and myself will be presenting a one-day workshop with a hands-on approach to active use of the color wheel for executing successful paintings from photographs. There are still a couple of openings so y all come join us and checkout the other events that have been planned thanks to input from our members (big shoutout also to APS program chair, Susan Hurst). The Casey Klahn 4-day workshop in October still has one or two spaces available. He is a colorist par excellence. Hope to see you there! 2 Next Meeting: Photo Reference Susan Hurst requests that members bring a painting inspired by a photo reference. She would like for members to share with the group how they use photos as a springboard for the finished piece. Also share any aids used, such as a plein air piece, an artist or exhibit that influenced the work. Or perhaps a class or even a new set of pastels was the catalyst. We would be particularly interested in what was changed or manipulated in the photo to make a better painting. She thinks we have an excellent source within our own members to see some creativity. So gather your painting and story boards to share with each other. March Meeting We had an excellent crowd for the talk by Susan Chambers on the use of the Color Wheel. Mini-Workshops Nancy Martin reports that we are about to begin the first of our mini-workshops scheduled for 2019 by Unleashing the Power of the Color Wheel. Susan Hurst and Cathy Nugent will teach this workshop at the Innovation Hub on April 27th. This will be a follow up of sorts to the April APS meeting program. On June 29th, Mary Ann Stafford will lead us to explore the drama of Painting with Pastel On Black Surfaces at the Butler Center. Registration forms for both workshops are included near the end of this newsletter. Be sure and mark your calendars for September 28th when Marlene Gremillion will lead us in exploring how to work outside the box by Using Pastel in Mixed Media. This workshop will be held at the Butler Center and a flyer will be posted closer to the event. Donations received for attending these workshops go towards supporting our national exhibition.

3 From IAPS (via Shirley Anderson) IAPS Convention The 2019 International Association of Pastel Societies Convention is fast approaching. There are very few slots still open, but if you have a chance, don't let this opportunity pass you by. Each Member Society has been asked to participate in the Friday Night Fiesta. If you are planning to attend or if you have ideas on how the Arkansas Pastel Society might showcase our artists, please contact Shirley Anderson at sranderson0930@sbcglbal.net. Travelling with Pastels Pastel artists are increasingly having trouble getting their pastels through airport security, especially when travelling abroad. IAPS created a travel label for their members to attach to pastel boxes when travelling. Download the label pdf: here or print it below. Tiffany Lane s pastel painting Acrobatic Feast was juried into the Small Works National Competition that will be held at the Mena Art Gallery May 1st thru June 1st. The reception for the event will be held Saturday, May 4th at 6pm. As one of the founders of the Arkansas Young Artists Association, Mary Ann Stafford will be honored at their 40th anniversary program at the Statehouse Convention Center, downtown Little Rock, on April 10. The program will include the annual membership competition of student artworks from across Arkansas. Vic Mastis will teach two workshops in June. Both will take place at the Eureka Springs School of Art (15751 US Highway 62, Eureka Springs, Arkansas 72632). Introducing the World of Pastels - Three Day Workshop Date: June 24-26, 2019 Different starting methods like watercolor and alcohol under washes will be taught. You will make one of your own textured surfaces to use during class. Learn about elements of a good painting and how to frame a pastel painting. With lots of one-on-one instruction you will complete 2 or more paintings. Students will use the instructors supplies (included in price) of $ Beginner to Intermediate Take Control of Your Reference Material - One Day Workshop Date: Friday, June 21, 2019 Do you always try to paint or draw exactly what you see in your reference photo? This one day class will help you break this habit and put your own expressions into your artwork. We will do some fun exercises to assist your hand to loosen up and your brain to expand. 7 UNLEASH THE POWER OF THE COLOR WHEEL Mini-Workshop Arkansas Pastel Society/Mini Workshop Saturday April 27, 10-4 Suggested donation $30.00 members; $50.00 nonmembers The Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub, 204 East 4 th Street, North Little Rock Contact Person: Nancy Martin, henson2martin@gmail.com Susan Hurst and Cathy Nugent will lead the group through exercises exploring color themes using The Artist s Mixing Guide Color Wheel. The goal is to learn the importance and power of color choices in ways you may not be familiar with. The first half of the class will explore different color themes in small studies using the landscape and/or still life. The second half of the class will explore the impact color choices have on our painting and in our surroundings. The class will end with a group critique to discuss the studies by the students and how the color wheel helped them make their pastel choices. We will break for lunch from Bring a sack lunch and continue to work through the lunch hour or take a break and visit any of the numerous eateries within walking distance of the Hub. 8 Mini-Workshop PAINTING WITH PASTEL ON BLACK SURFACES Arkansas Pastel Society/Mini Workshop Saturday June 29, 2019, 9:30am 3:30pm The Galleries at Library Square, 401 President Clinton Ave. (The Butler Center) Contact Person: Nancy Martin, Working with pastel has been described either as drawing or as painting depending on the technique. This workshop, led by Mary Ann Stafford, will include both examples while working on black surfaces. Stafford was turned on to working on black supports by a recent workshop with Christine Ivers, and she has made her own black supports as well as using black sanded paper. She usually works from her own photographs, or those given to her by others with their permission. The morning exercise will feature a rendering (drawing) of flowers on 9 x 12 black sanded paper using pastel pencils and/or hard pastels such as Nupastels or CretaColor. We will either draw freehand or use a gridding method to draw from a color 8 x 10 photo. In the afternoon, we will do a painting of a morning or evening landscape scene on foamboard which we have covered with a mixture of gesso and pumice (mixture will be furnished.) The focus will be on composition, contrast, and texture. We will break for lunch from Bring a sack lunch and continue to work through lunch or visit any of the eateries nearby.
