1 Newsletter: October, 2015 Next Meeting: Tuesday, October 27, 6:30pm, Westerville Public Library, Meeting Rooms A/B Presentation for upcoming meeting: Judy Anderson Judy Anderson lives in Westerville and has been a lifelong artist. She creates works in acrylic and watercolor that demonstrate her ability to use color and shape to create imaginative and beautiful art. She has been an illustrator, exhibited at Closson s gallery in Cincinnati, exhibits at Hayley s Gallery in New Albany, and she teaches, judges and critiques art. She recently had an exhibit at the Westerville Community Center. For more about her work, please visit artbyanderson.com. Judy shares that her presentation will be about the lines and shapes that make up a good drawing. Using just the black and white of the pencil or pen, we will have the freedom to play with the composition and concentrate on values without being distracted by color. Placement, proportion and perspective will show us different ways we can highlight the subject. I will bring a couple of set-ups but you are welcome to work with your own material; photos you have taken or objects (3 to 5) you relate to. Besides your pencils or pens, bring a stump, sketch book or paper, erasers and a transparent ruler. A couple sheets of tracing paper are also helpful. Let's explore the possibilities! 2 Artist of the Month: Lori Andrews What medium(s) do you work with? (oil, pastels, watercolor, sculpture, woodworking, glass, etc.) I mostly carve in wood and use acrylics to paint the pieces, if it s called for. I have recently been working digitally in PhotoShop as well, but have dabbled in all the above mentioned mediums at one time or the other. How long have you been painting, etc.? I have been carving now almost 30 years. What are your artistic influences and/or what inspires you or has been an inspiration in the past? For 2D inspiration - Children s book illustrators of the golden age like Rackham, Dulac, Norman Rockwell as well as Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Eric Sloane, Alphonis Mucha, James Gurney, Don Maitz, NC Weyth, Frank Frazetta and for 3D, numerous different carvers and sculptors. Classic sculpture like Greek and Roman, Renaissance and any realistic sculptors. Your opinion about what makes your creation a complete work? When I can think of nothing more I can add to it or that I have achieved the feeling or look that I was aiming for. Do you have one style or many? Realism even if the image or creature is imaginary Describe anything unique about your style. Attention to detail in capturing the form of the creature. What inspired you to choose this style(s) of art? I love to draw, paint and now carve animals. The more life-like I can make them the better. Wood allows me to be able to sculpt very delicate features that can not be done in other 3D mediums. How long does your creation generally take from beginning prep to end? That will depend on the size and complexity of the piece. Some will go quickly 8-10 hours, others will take months or years to complete. Do you tend to do work in long stints or short spurts of time? When roughing out a carving about two hours is all that I can take at a time. You are constantly checking the shape and form making sure you are taking off enough but not too much and that takes a lot of concentration and checking of your reference. When I get to the detailing, everything is in place and so I can spend over 6-8 hours non-stop on it. Would you say that most of your work is small, medium, large or a mix? Most would fall into the small to medium range with a few large ones thrown in. Large ones need to be a special piece of wood or a glue up that takes more planning. Small and medium pieces fit available wood much better.

3 WAL Recognition: President Terri Ruh presented Past President John Cameron with a certificate of recognition at the September Westerville Art League meeting. John served for two years as President of WAL, from His vision, dedication, hard work, sense of humor, and love of art have made him a great President and member of the league. We thank you, John, for all you have done for WAL! Past Meeting/Minutes: Below are pictures of Bill Westerman providing critiques of member work at the September WAL meeting. Westerville Art League Meeting, September 22, Minutes President Terri Ruh opened the meeting at the Westerville Library at 6:45 and welcomed all. The attending officers were introduced, Kathryn Bubenchek Vice President, Kathryn Smithson Treasurer, Mary Pat Turner Secretary was not in attendance. Artist of the month, headed up by Kat Bubenchek, was discussed and Kat stated that there were openings in the months of January, Feb, March and April. October s Artist is Lori Andrews, November s Artist is John Cameron, May will be Gail Paulus. If you would like to volunteer yourself or someone else, please contact Kat. Art in Public Places Chair, Mary Pat Turner, absent. Other committee chairs were announced as Lynn Carty and Karen Chambers co- chairs for Programs and Presenters. Nancy Hoffman has taken over Terri s position of writing the Newsletter. Refreshment Chair is Karen Shank and a sign in sheet was passed around for that. Renee Kropat continues to chair the Website. The Spring Show will be co- chaired by Nancy Hoffman and Kat Bubenchek. Many more volunteers are welcome to help them. John Cameron stated that Friday, September 25, would be the last Arts Alley and Fourth Friday event for Westerville for this year. They have room for artists to display up to 72 paintings and also tables to display other works. He encouraged

4 anyone to attend even if you don t pre- register. Arts Alley is on the North Side of the Hanby School along the sidewalk. Fourth Fridays start in April and go through September. Terri stressed that the purpose of the Westerville Art League is to promote and support visual art and artists in Westerville. There are many opportunities to display your art and be active in the organization. The membership is made up of a variety of skill sets. Treasurer Kathryn Smithson stated that there was $ in the treasury. A presentation of a plaque was made to the outgoing past President John Cameron for his two years in office and for his service to the Art League. The Presenter for the evening was Bill Westerman, past president of Central Ohio Plein Air Society and noted artist, professor and judge. After a brief explanation of who art critics are, he critiqued all the work brought in by the WAL artists. His critiques were very complimentary and gave very helpful insight to each work. Karen Chambers announced the agenda for next month s meeting and told those who would be attending to bring pencils, pens, paper, etc to be able to participate in a drawing class by presenter Judy Anderson. 5 Member Exhibitions/Art Shows: The Worthington Area Art League has an all members art exhibit at the Church at Mill Run, 3500 Mill Run Drive, Hilliard, Ohio until October 27. A number of WAL members have their art work entered, including two pieces each by Kathryn Bubenchik and Lynn Carty. It s well worth a visit to see the variety of art work on display! John Cameron has a "one person show" at the Westerville Community and Recreation Center for the month of October, consisting of 54 watercolor paintings. Also, as a member of the Central Ohio Watercolor Society (COWS), John had 3 paintings accepted into a juried show at the Franklin Park Conservatory, along with several other COWS members. Their pieces will be part of the Conservatory's annual holiday festival entitled "Merry and Bright" that runs from November 21, 2015, through January 3, Proposed: "The Westerville Art League Winter 2016 Exhibit" at Inniswood in January Artwork to be hung on Thursday, December 31, 2015; with take down on Thursday, January 28, Mediums represented will be watercolor, pastel, oil, photography and acrylic.
