2 Fall- Winter 2012 Courses Fresh Faces at the Academy! We heard your requests for new classes, new teachers and more ways to learn. This year, we ve implemented those changes and made those enhancements so you can continue to build on your techniques with new teachers or spread your wings and try something completely new! We have five new instructors joining two respected veterans and we re offering a mix of standard and new classes. We believe that with a new perspective, you ll continue to take your skills to the next level. - we hope you agree! Artwork of Jane McElvany Coonce Drawing and Painting for Teens & Youth $275 for 10 weeks Students will work with pastel and/or acrylic. Materials, techniques, composition, value and color will be discussed. Students will work on individual projects with one-on-one and group instruction. Class projects will be presented and are optional; students can also work on their own projects and ideas. Students should bring a canvas to each class; instructor provides all other materials, including paints and pastels. A $25 fee is payable to the instructor on the first day of class. Materials, techniques, composition, value and color will be discussed. Students will work on individual projects with one-on-one and group instruction. Studio projects of still-life setups and figure drawings of clothed models also will be presented. All levels of art students are welcome. A supply fee will be collected at the first class. Are you stymied by what brush to choose, how to mix colors or how to sketch a scene? Painting is a wonderful way to express Artwork of Bryan Jernigan yourself artistically and everyone has to start somewhere! Take the first step into the world of acrylic painting in this basic techniques class. Discover the elements of composition, how to use a color wheel to create a harmonious or contrasting finished piece, and how both representative and abstract works share some of the same characteristics. Find a new way to balance your life by taking the first steps to discover your creative self. Students should bring a canvas to each class (4 total); instructor provides all other materials, including paints and easels. In four

3 Fall-Winter 2012 Courses sessions, students discover various tissuepaper collage techniques to create beautiful pieces, with each session building to the next starting with simple tissue placement techniques that follow Jungian theory. Custom Artwork of Bryan Jernigan tissue-paper creation techniques follow and graduates to working with found imagery. By using rudimentary materials (including tissue paper, watercolor artist paper, glue, liquid medium and spray sealants), teen and adult students will discover how to allow themselves to play while learning more about their creative selves in the process. A $20 materials fee is due to the instructor on the first night of class. Class size is limited to 8 students. Class #BJ12412 Tues 7:00 9:30 pm begins Oct 23 Class #BJ13115 Tues 7:00 9:30PM begins Feb 5 Mixed Media Collage This class explores techniques by collage artists Carrie Burns-Brown, Mike Bernard, Nancy Reyner and Ann Baldwin and demonstrates how to incorporate representative aspects into abstract works by adding acrylic paint and acrylic mediums to tissue-paper collage. This is a perfect opportunity for first-time artists to get their feet wet while allowing artistic veterans to get a handle on new techniques to further their own work styles. Teen and adult students will use acrylic Artwork of Bryan Jernigan paint, matte and gloss mediums, found objects and a variety of acrylic products to create one new piece at each class. A $20 materials fee is due to the instructor on the first night of class. Students should purchase four canvas boards, but teacher provides paints and all other materials. Class #BJ12413 Tues 7:00 9:30 pm begins Nov 27 Class #BJ13116 Tues 7:00 9:30PM begins Mar 12 Creative Collage Workshop Discover exciting methods for creating your own distinctive collage papers in this 4-week workshop. Develop collages with stamped and acrylicpainted papers, acrylic skins and free-forms. Explore several stamping methods, try imagetransfer techniques, and Artwork of Linda Maldonado hone your design and composition skills. Some papers, materials and tools provided, as well as instructional handouts. A supply list will be ed upon registration. A $20 materials fee to be paid to instructor at first session. The class will include elements of papercutting design, basic cutting techniques using an X- Acto knife, Artwork of Dave Jenkins and methods of mounting finished work on backgrounds. Students will first cut designs provided by the instructor, then work to develop and cut their own designs. The course will also explore silhouette making and various papercutting traditions from

Join us for this class, where the basics of watercolor painting will be introduced with a step-by-step approach, with demonstrations and handson applications. Artwork of Sandra Hill We will explore color- mixing, brush-handling, and classic watercolor techniques such as value control, washes, glazes and masking. In the first class, the instructor will provide information on a basic watercolor set-up (i.e., paper, paints, palettes and brushes) and will provide some materials as well as loaner brushes so students can begin experiencing the joy of watercolor painting from the very first session. A materials fee of $20 is due at the beginning of the first class. Additionally, each student should bring a roll of VIVA paper towels and a roll of toilet paper to the first class. Loaner brushes, paint and paper will be supplied. This class is limited to adults and teens 14 years of age and over. A $10 supply fee is due at the workshop. Our emphasis will be on creative interpretation and developing a unique point-of-view. Students receive individual attention, demonstrations and critique. A $15 supply fee, and an additional $15 for those who do not have their own paints and brushes, will be due at the first Artwork of Mary Phelan class. Class size limited to 8 (minimum 3). Work with line, color, and form to discover your inner artist. Use acrylic paints to apply multiple layers to canvases and create a dialogue between you and your evolving painting. While your final works may resemble a vase, horse or country landscape, you ll be totally surprised by the finished result. A $20 materials fee is due at the first class. About the Arlington Artists Alliance and the Academy Formed in 2000 as a non-profit, the Arlington Artists Alliance grew from an idea by several working artists who sought to make the arts a more visible part of the community. The group currently includes more than 100 members who exhibit on a monthly or bimonthly basis at a variety of Arlington venues, including government offices, community organizations, churches, businesses, restaurants and cafes. The Alliance also hosts several annual exhibits, including a week-long art festival at Fort C.F. Smith. Since 2003, the Alliance has operated the with classes and workshops for both children and adults.
