Ldies nd John, As I ws looking t my clendr tody, I relized tht it is time to begin to think bout officers for According to our guild bylws, t the September executive meeting the president is to ppointment member to hed the nominting committee. Then the chirperson is to sk two people to serve on the committee. Help mke the nominting committee's job esier by volunteering if you hve specil interest in prticulr re. We re mking quite lot of progress on plnning for the 2014 Quilt Show. Shwnee, our show chirmn, will be mking report t ech meeting beginning in October. Hving show will tke lots of work nd time, but I think it will be well worth the effort. Don't forget to bring your ugly fbric quilts to the cookout! I cn promise you tht mine will be the ugliest! Not only did I get REALLY ugly fbric, I hve quilted it myself...so you will see some REALLY ugly quilting s well. Also, remember to bring your ft qurters for the drwing nd your September Secret Pl gifts. Looking forwrd to seeing ech of you on September 21st! 2 Volume 1, Issue 8 pge 2 September 2013 September Progrm: Our progrm nd meeting for September will be Sturdy the 21 st, which is the dy of the picnic. We will hve our meeting t 9:30 nd then hve progrm/workshop on lef pounding following the meeting. If you hve never done or even herd of the lef pounding technique, it is done by pounding pigment out of the leves onto muslin fbric. We will lern nd do the step-by-step procedures, which will include prepring the lef nd fbric nd the proper wy to pound the lef to get the design to sok into the fbric. **Ech member needs to bring flt hed hmmer nd n old bth towel (tht is not thick).** Everything else will be provided. This will be very informtive nd fun workshop so we hope you will be there! September Refreshments: There will be no refreshments for the month of September s we re hving our first ever LSQG picnic! We will hve coffee nd brekfst pstries t the meeting in the morning. Members who hve indicted they re ttending the cookout hve signed up to bring n item. September Drwing: Hlloween When witches go riding, nd blck cts re seen, the moon lughs nd whispers, tis ner Hlloween. The September drwing will be ft qurters with the Hlloween theme or colors. Congrtultions to the winner of our August drwing, Anit Fountin! She won big o bg o btiks! Thnks to ll of our guild members for bringing so mny embellishments to our meeting nd mking our surprise progrm in August success! We hd five smll bins of embellishments to use nd lots of knit nd fleece fbric! All of you were such good sports when you found out tht our surprise progrm ws going to be working on our community service project, chemo cps nd wrps! We hd relly good time working on them! Working together nd contributing smll mount of our time nd some cretivity is wht mkes our projects even more specil to those who receive them. Thnks gin for being such gret group our guild hs to be, without doubt, the best!!! Guild Cookout Don t forget our cookout Sturdy, September 21 st! We will strt the dy with our monthly guild meeting t 9:30.m. nd then we will hve our lef pounding workshop. Our cookout will begin round 2:00 p.m. Remember, the guild will be providing the hmburger met nd hot dogs s well s ll of the pper products for the mel. A food sign-up sheet for the dditionl food items needed for the cookout ws vilble t the August meeting. Mny of the members did not hve chnce to sign up before they left nd hve signed up by clling or emiling Crolyn. If you hven t signed up yet, plese do so by contcting her. We need s ccurte count s possible to ensure we purchse the right mount of met nd lso so tht we know wht food items no one hs committed to bring. Don t forget, spouses re invited to ttend the cookout nd we look forwrd to hving them there! Agin, if you hven t signed up, plese do so nd be sure to let Crolyn know if your spouse will be there, too! Ugly Quilt Chllenge Prticipnts DON T FORGET YOUR UGLY QUILTS HAVE TO BE FINISHED AND READY TO SHOW AT THE SEPTEMBER MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 21 ST!!! Meet Shnnon Howrd Shnnon ws born in Grnts, New Mexico nd moved to Ls Cruces in 1973 when she mrried. Lter she lived in Germny. In 2001, she nd her fmily decided they needed culture shock nd moved to Jcksonville. She lter went through divorce, strted college (trying to decide wht she wnted to be when she grew up), sold her home nd strted new life! In 2007, Shnnon remrried, strted business nd lost her son in cr crsh. Shnnon hs enjoyed the good times nd endured the bd with the love nd support of wonderful church fmily. Finlly, Shnnon ws ble to complete college in 2008 nd tught Fmily nd Consumer Sciences (most of us know s Home Economics) t Plesnt Vlley High School for three yers. She lso worked nd tught clsses t Sew Wht quilt shop with Becky Everett for three yers. During this time, Shnnon thinks she probbly bought enough fbric to lst her for lifetime! When she isn t sewing, clening or going somewhere, she spends most of her time s grndmother, wtching her grnd kids while her dughter works. The ltest dventure for Shnnon hs been the recent purchse of long rm quilting mchine, so now she is in the quilting business! Shnnon begn sewing in junior high school. She strted quilting in Germny where she took hnd piecing clss. When Shnnon moved to Albm, she took dditionl clsses t the Rose Cottge t the Old Mill in Oxford. Eductionl Corner Bsic Pressing When pressing sewn strips of fbric or quilt blocks, do not slide the iron, but insted lift the iron up nd move to the next re to be pressed nd put the iron bck down on the fbric. Sliding the iron cn cuse the fbric to become distorted especilly when pressing sems cut on the bis. When pressing sem, first press the sem together. This will help to eliminte ny slight puckering tht my hve occurred while sewing the sem. Then plce the sem so tht the side to which the sem llownce will be pressed is on the top. Next, crefully press the sem llownce to the side from the right side of the fbric. By pressing sem llownces from the front, the quilter elimintes the possibility of pressing fold or plet in the sem. To Stem or Not to Stem Mny quilters feel tht using stem while pressing quilt blocks cn led to more distortion. Other quilters like the nice shrp finish stem gives. The beginning quilter should try pressing both with nd without stem to decide which method she/he prefers. Note: when pressing blocks, which re being pieced on pper, the quilter should use dry iron so s to not distort the pper. When to Finger Press When finger-pressing fbric, the quilter should use the tips of their fingers to press the fbric insted of the iron. Mny quilters wnt to finger press sem open before pressing it with the iron to mke the tsk esier. Or they my choose to finger press delicte or npped fbric tht my be dmged if pressed with n iron.

4 Volume 1, Issue 8 pge 4 September 2013 Community Service Project Updte -- Prior to our lst meeting 25 chemo cps nd 20 wrps were completed nd hd been tken to the Cncer Cre Center. At the August meeting our progrm we hd workshop where we worked in n effort to complete our community service project. Ech member ws rndomly plced in one of four groups to work on the cps nd wrps. The groups were mchine opertors, cutters, finishers nd embellishers. At the end of the meeting we hd completed nd embellished 61 knit cps nd 33 fleece wrps. Additionlly, since the August meeting, 29 cps nd 3 wrps hve been completed. If the clcultions re correct, to dte, we hve finished 115 cps nd 36 wrps. Although we hve not set specific gol, we wnted to mke s mny s possible. Severl members hve indicted tht they hve purchsed dditionl fbric to mke cps nd wrps t home. As you finish them nd turn them in, plese let Mry or Anit know so tht we cn keep totl. If you hve finished ny since the lst meeting, plese bring them to the September meeting on the 21 st. Those we collect will be dded with the reminder of the cps nd wrps nd tken to the Cncer center for distribution to ptients. Thnks to ll of you for your commitment to this yer s project!!! If you re interested in mking more cps or wrps nd need pttern, see Mry or Anit Lick Skillet Quilts By the Lke Quilt Show Updte Plns re coming long for our 1 st Lick Skillet Quilt Show to be held September 11-13, 2014 t the Oxford Civic Center. Set up will be the 11 th nd the show will run the 12 th nd 13 th. This will be judged show for quilts submitted only by members of our guild. As we hve emphsized from the very beginning, this is YOUR show nd we need the help of every member for successful show. Quilt show chirperson, Shwnee Weigt, hs been working hrd to form some of the committees nd the chirpersons for some of the committees hve been filled. Thnks to those of you who hve lredy volunteered for committee! If you hven t volunteered, plese be sure to do so. We need every member working on committee for this to be success! Agin, this is YOUR show nd we know you wnt to be proud of the hrd work we will be putting into the show! On August 29 th, Shwnee, Anit nd Crolyn met with Deb Henderson, Cleo Wrd nd Terri Grrett of the Cotton Ptch Quilters Guild. Their guild ws formed in 1985 nd their first quilt show ws in 1995,which indictes the welth of knowledge they hve to offer! Deb nd Cleo re quilt show chirmen nd Terri is chirmn of the hnging committee. We gthered some very useful informtion, ides nd do s nd don ts tht will be tremendous help in plnning nd holding successful show. Beginning in October, Shwnee will be giving monthly updtes on the show plnning, timelines, quilt show meetings, etc. to keep us informed s to where we re nd where we still hve to go! Shwnee s pln is to hve the chirpersons ssigned for ech committee by the October guild meeting! An mendment to the guild bylws will be written to cover ll spects of the show. Additionlly, the plnning committee voted to hve judged ctegory for Chllenge Quilt for the show. The topic will be Bridges nd the chllenge is to crete quilt tht reflects some spect of bridges perhps picture, your imgintion, your pst, sying or metphor, the choice is yours! This mkes ech quilt different, cretive nd cn be interpreted in vriety of wys. A chllenge cn tke you to new height of cretivity! We hope ech of you hve n entry in this chllenge! 5 Volume 1, Issue 8 pge 5 September Quilt Show Opportunity Quilt The end of August quilt committee members, Julie Wells, Bev Schewnick, Shwnee Weigt, Crolyn Dvis nd Anit Fountin mde trip to the Scrlet Thred in Jonesboro, GA to select fbric for our 2014 opportunity quilt which will be presented t our 2014 Quilts By the Lke Quilt Show. Btik fbrics in utumn colors (shown below) were selected nd purchsed for the Str Medllion quilt pttern by Pt Speth. Julie Wells, our opportunity quilt committee chirperson will give n updte t the October meeting on timeline for piecing, quilting nd finishing the quilt nd will updte the guild on the sttus throughout the constructing of the quilt. Agin, thnks to the committee for ll of your work! Lick Skillet Recipe Corner Super Fig Cobbler 5 c. fresh figs, cut into hlves 2 tsps lemon juice ¾ c. sugr 3 Tbsp flour ½ tsp cinnmon ½ tsp nutmeg ¾ c. wter 1 Tbsp mrgrine 1 c. flour ¼ tsp slt 1/3 c. shortening ¼ c. shredded Cheddr cheese 2 Tbsp cold wter Quilter s Humor Yes, I m still sewing! If you re expecting dinner, you just need to go bck to the jungle! Arrnge figs evenly in lightly gresed 6x10 inch bking dish. Spring with lemon juice. Mix sugr, 3 Tbsp flour, cinnmon, nutmeg nd ¾ cup wter in bowl. Pour evenly over figs nd dot with mrgrine. Combine 1cup flour nd slt in lrge bowl. Cut in shortening until crumbly. Stir in Cheddr cheese nd sprinkle with cold wter. Stir with fork until moistened; shpe into bll. Roll 1/8 in thick on lightly floured surfce. Cut into ½ x 10-inch strips nd rrnge in lttice fshion over figs, trimming ends. Bke t 350 for min or until hot nd bubbly. Yield: 6 servings 2013 UFO Chllenge Updte After this month s meeting, there re only two months left to turn in UFOs for the drwing in December! Where re you on your list? The process begins with selection of the Nominting Committee. Thnks goes to Bev Schewnick who volunteered to serve s the Nominting Committee Chirperson. Bev will be forming the committee by soliciting two dditionl volunteers to serve with her. The committee will begin soliciting volunteers in September nd October to run for the Executive Bord positions of President, Vice-President, Secretry nd Tresurer.
