2 Drw lrge circle on the bord. All the numbers you write inside the circle follow certin rule; none of the numbers outside the circle follow the rule. As you dd numbers inside nd out, students try to determine the rule. The esiest exmple is evens in the circle, odds outside the circle. Other possibilities include fctors of 12; multiples of 4; divisible by 3 or 5 or... ; primes nd composites; two-digits in the circle, one- nd three-digits outside; numbers less thn 20, numbers greter thn 20; regulr qudrilterls in, irregulr qudrilterls out. Or try trick question on the kids: only numbers written with stright lines (1, 4, 7) in the circle, only becuse they hve both stright nd curved lines. More possibilities: ½), numbers in the circle double the tens plce less) thn the number in the ones plce (i.e.: 32, 98, 76, or 23, 45, 67; to mke it more chllenging, try 1098, 5432) t dd to certin totl (57, 183, 48) Digit Plce Gme (STRAND: Mthemticl Resoning): The gol of this gme is for students to use logicl resoning to deduce secret three-digit (or, more difficult, four-digit) number. The techer (or leder) writes down threedisclose it. Students tke turns guessing the number. With ech guess, the techer gives one of the following clues for ech digit in the number:: correct digit nd in the correct plce correct digit but in the wrong plce no digits re correct (but sk students wht vluble informtion this provides) As students get more informtion bout the number, they strt mking educted, rther thn rndom, guesses.

9 Slute (STRAND: Number Sense-Addition/Multipliction): division or subtrction. Ech group will need deck of crds with fce crds removed (ces = 1). One plyer is the judge. ddition. The judge gives ech plyer crd, fce down. When the judge forehed so the judge nd the other plyer cn see it. The judge then nnounces the sum (using the proper word-sum) of the two numbers. The first plyer to correctly nnounce his/her own number wins the two crds. The other plyer must sy their number lso. The gme winner is the one with the most crds. For exmple, if plyer A sees tht Plyer hs 7 nd the judge nnounces the sum s 13, Plyer A knows tht her crd is 6 nd sys so. Slute works the sme wy for multipliction. To mke the ddition gme more chllenging, ply with four plyers. The judge nnounces the sum nd ech plyer hs to look t two other numbers before deciding wht his/hers is. Ech plyer should be sked to stte his/her number. Twenty-five (STRAND: Number Sense-Add/Sub): fce crds removed (ce = 1) for ech group of plyers. efore plying the gme, review the number pirs tht dd to 10. Then hve the students look for wys to use this knowledge to help them dd nd subtrct fster. Del out ll the crds, n equl number to ech plyer. The crds re left fce down in pile in front of ech plyer. The first plyer turns over the top crd nd plces it fce up in the center of the ply re nnouncing the number. The next plyer turns over crd, dds the number to the crd lredy plyed, sys the sum out loud, nd plces the crd on top of the previously plyed crd. The next plyer turns over crd nd dds the number to the sum of the first two crds. Ply continues in this wy until someone hs crd tht, when dded, will give sum greter thn 25. When tht hppens, the plyer must subtrct rther thn dd. Ply continues until someone gets sum of exctly 25. The plyer, who gets sum of exctly 25, wins tht round nd goes first in the next round.
