1 UPDATED HYDROCARBON Hydrocrbon is poncho-style cowl in bulky-weight yrn, worked in the round. It ws designed to be s prcticl s it is stylish, with shping tht covers the neck nd shoulders nd the ese nd length to wer with bckpck. This pttern ws designed specificlly to show off Clover's MONOCHRONICLE STRAIGHT, but should lend itself well to ny yrn of similr weight nd properties. Finl mesurements Neck circumference: Length (top of neck to hem): Hem circumference: 47 cm 43 cm 100 cm Yrn 5 blls of Clover MONOCHRONICLE STRAIGHT Needles etc mm stright needles for tubulr cst-on 10 mm circulr needles 3 distinct types of mrkers (1 of A; 3 of B; 2 of C) Don't hve tht mny? Use sfety pins, kids' hir elstic, or dot nil polish on your mrkers. Guge (in lrger needles, 10cm) 11 stitches nd 14 rows in stockinette 10.5 stitches nd 16 rows in slip-stitch smocking About MONOCHRONICLE STRAIGHT Bulky Weight, on the ft side 37 meters /40g Woven texture 60% wool 40% crylic

2 Slip-Stitch Smocking in the round ws dpted from Brbr Wlker's "Second Tresury of Knitting" (Contributed by Hildegrd M. Elsner) Stitch Pttern Slip-stitch smocking in the round = repets of 8 stitches over 8 rows (S3 from hereon) sl1 = slip yrn with yrn in bck R1: *sl1, k4, pss slipped st over the 4 knit st, p3*. Repet ** to the end R2: *k1, p1, p1 under the running thred, p1, k4*. Repet ** to end. R3 & 4: *K1, p3, k4*, repet ** to end. R5: k1, p3, *sl1, k4, slip 1st stitch over the 4 knit stiches, p3*. Repet ** to the lst 4 stitches, then sl 1, k3, slip mrker (A), k1 nd pss slipped st over the 4 knit st. (i.e. The "lst" stitch of this round is ctully the 1st stitch of R6). R6: k4, p1, p1 under the running thred, p1, *k5, p1, p1 under the running thred, p1*. Repet ** to end. R7 & 8: *k5, p3*, repet ** to end. Instructions CO 56 stitches using the tubulr method, with the smller needles. Complete 2 prep rows. Work row 1 of S3 using the lrger needle. At the end of the row, PM (mrker A), nd join in the round. I used TECHknitterʼs method: Neck section Work 24 rounds. On the lst round, plce mrkers: B mrkers: After stitches 3, 28 nd 31 C mrkers: After stitches 8, 32 A & B mrkers now divide the cowl into 4 sections of 3,, 3 nd stitches. The 3-stitch sections will be referred to s 'tringles'. C mrkers indicte strt of S3 sections. Increse rounds, first set For the next 8 rounds, work s below t the sme time: Continue working S3 in the 16 stitches fter the first mrker C, nd the 8 stitches fter the second mrker C (i.e. stitches 9 24 nd stitches 33 40) Work the rest of the round in knit stitch (st. st) On every odd-numbered round, dd 4 stitches in the tringle only. First set of increses complete, 88 stitches on needle. Both mrkers fll t the strt of the 8-stitch rep, first row I worked double increses t ech end of the tringle by doing bckwrd-loop cst-on before & fter the 1st & lst stitch of ech tringle. Simple chrts included on lst pge, for esier relity checks & mods.

3 Body, 1 Work in S3 strting with row 1. The extrusions should fll into the pttern; remove the C mrkers s you go. Work totl of 2 complete reps, or 16 rounds. On the lst round, plce the C mrkers fter stitches 32 nd 72. Increse rounds, second set This is identicl in process to the first set of increses, except for the plcement of S3. For the next 8 rounds, work s below t the sme time: Continue working S3 in the 8 stitches fter the first mrker C, nd the 16 stitches fter the second mrker C (i.e. stitches nd 73 88). Work the rest of the round in knit stitch (st. st) On every odd-numbered round, dd 4 stitches in the tringle only. Second set of increses complete, 120 stitches on needle. Body, 2 Work in S3 strting with row 1. The smocked sections should fll into the pttern; remove the C mrkers s you go. Work 10 rounds. Finishing Bind off loosely. With CO til, sew up the gp left by tubulr CO. Block nd wer, folding the neck out, in or not. I used EZʼs sewn bind-off. If I hd more yrn or using light, solid colorwy, I would hve gone for the tubulr bind off. Mking Modifictions This is pttern of 8ʼs. The S3 is repet of 8 stitches nd 8 rows. Every increse row dds 8 stitches, or 1 full rep. So, I. If you wnt more girth to strt with, just dd multiples of 8, to the non-tringle sections. II. Wnt to dd length? You cn dd third set of increses fter Body 2, or or work more rounds of S3 in both body sections. III. Wnt the S3 extrusions somewhere else? Think bout the lst round of n increse set. Find stitch tht: 1) flls t the beginning of the 8-stich rep (i.e. stitch 9, 17,, 33 etc., etc.), 2) lredy exists in the first round of the increse set (i.e. not ʻMʼ) nd 3) is followed by 7 or 15 (or 23 or 31 for tht mtter) stitches tht lso meet condition 2 Plce mrker C before tht stitch insted. You cn lso do prtil extrusions, by cesing the S3 before the lst row of the increse set (nd in corollry, strting them some wy into the increse set). This hs the dvntge of letting you position extrusions without worrying bout hving them mtch up to the next body section.
