WARNING - To reduce the risk of burns, fire, electric shock, or injury to persons. 2 Alwys unplug the mchine from the electricl outlet when mking ny djustments mentioned in the instruction mnul: To unplug the mchine, switch the mchine to the symbol O position to turn it off, then grsp the plug nd pull it out of the electricl outlet. Do not pull on the cord. Plug the mchine directly into the electricl outlet. Do not use n extension cord. Alwys unplug your mchine if the power is cut. 3 Electricl Hzrds: This mchine should be connected to n AC power source within the rnge indicted on the rting lbel. Do not connect it to DC power source or inverter. If you re not sure wht kind of power source you hve, contct qulified electricin. This mchine is pproved for use in the country of purchse only. 4 Never operte this mchine if it hs dmged cord or plug, if it is not working properly, if it hs been dropped or dmged, or wter is spilled on the unit. Return the mchine to the nerest uthorized deler or service center for exmintion, repir, electricl or mechnicl djustment. While the mchine is stored or in use if you notice nything unusul, such s n odor, het, discolortion or deformtion, stop using the mchine nd immeditely unplug the power cord. When trnsporting the mchine, be sure to crry it by its hndle. Lifting the mchine by ny other prt my dmge the mchine or result in the mchine flling, which could cuse injuries. When lifting the mchine, be creful not to mke ny sudden or creless movements, otherwise you my injure your bck or knees.

4 5 Alwys keep your work re cler: Never operte the mchine with ny ir openings blocked. Keep ventiltion openings of the mchine nd foot control free from the build up of lint, dust, nd loose cloth. Do not store objects on the foot controller. Do not use extension cords. Plug the mchine directly into the electricl outlet. Never drop or insert ny object into ny opening. Do not operte where erosol (spry) products re being used or where oxygen is being dministered. Do not use the mchine ner het source, such s stove or iron; otherwise, the mchine, power cord or grment being sewn my ignite, resulting in fire or n electric shock. Do not plce this mchine on n unstble surfce, such s n unstedy or slnted tble, otherwise the mchine my fll, resulting in injuries. 6 Specil cre is required when sewing: Alwys py close ttention to the needle. Do not use bent or dmged needles. Keep fingers wy from ll moving prts. Specil cre is required round the mchine needle. Switch the mchine to the symbol O position to turn it off when mking ny djustments in the needle re. Do not use dmged or incorrect needle plte, s it could cuse the needle to brek. Do not push or pull the fbric when sewing, nd follow creful instruction when freehnd stitching so tht you do not deflect the needle nd cuse it to brek. 7 This mchine is not toy: Your close ttention is necessry when the mchine is used by or ner children. Do not use outdoors. 8 For longer service life: When storing this mchine, void direct sunlight nd high humidity loctions. Do not use or store the mchine ner spce heter, iron, hlogen lmp, or other hot objects. Use only neutrl sops or detergents to clen the cse. 11 Needle nd presser foot section Needle threder (for s equipped with the needle threder) (pge 28) b Buttonhole lever Lower the buttonhole lever when sewing buttonholes nd br tcks. c Presser foot holder The presser foot is instlled onto the presser foot holder. d Presser foot holder screw Use the presser foot holder screw to hold the presser foot holder in plce. e Presser foot The presser foot pplies pressure consistently on the fbric s the sewing tkes plce. Opertion buttons The opertion buttons help you to esily perform vrious bsic sewing mchine opertions. The opertion buttons differ depending on the sewing mchine. Reverse/reinforcement stitch button Press the reverse/reinforcement stitch button to sew reverse stitches. Reverse stitches re sewn by keeping the button pressed down to sew in the opposite direction. For detils, refer to Sewing reinforcement stitches (pge 42). Buttons provided on some s b Strt/stop button Press the strt/stop button to strt or stop sewing. The mchine sews t slow speed t the beginning of sewing while the button is depressed. When sewing is stopped, the needle is lowered in the fbric. For detils, refer to Strting to sew (pge 4). c Needle position button Press the needle position button to rise or lower the needle. Be sure to rise the needle before threding the needle. Use this button to chnge the sewing direction or for detiled sewing in smll res. Pressing the button twice sews one stitch. d Sewing speed controller Slide the sewing speed controller to djust the sewing speed. 9

12 KNOWING YOUR SEWING MACHINE Opertion pnel <For s equipped with 2 font types of chrcter stitches> The opertion pnel, locted on the front of the sewing mchine, llows you to select stitch nd specify how the stitch will be sewn. (Press the side to reduce the stitch length; press the + side to increse the stitch length.) d Stitch width djustment key Press this key to djust the stitch width. 13 Spool pin As shown, press down on the spool pin lever with your finger to rise the spool pin. Storing the spool pin When plcing the cover on the sewing mchine before storing or if the spool pin will not be used, return the spool pin to its storge position. Remove the spool from the spool pin, nd then fold up the spool pin, s shown in the illustrtion, until it snps into plce to secure it. Do not grb the br to rise the spool pin, otherwise, the spool pin my bend or brek. Storing the spool cp The enclosed spool cp (lrge, medium, smll) cn be stored by ttching it to the spool pin s shown in the illustrtion. When ttching the spool cp, position it with the rounded side towrd the spool pin.

14 KNOWING YOUR SEWING MACHINE Instlling the spool pin If the spool pin hs been removed from the mchine, insert the tb on the spool pin into the hole on the bck of the mchine, s shown. Flip chrt You cn check the pttern numbers of the stitches using the flip chrt on the mchine. Hold the notch with your finger to flip the chrt. For s equipped with flip chrt on the top pnel b Hole b Tb Push the spool pin down until it locks into plce. For s equipped with flip chrt on the front pnel tch 2

15 USING YOUR SEWING MACHINE Power supply precutions Be sure to observe the following precutions concerning the power supply. WARNING Use only regulr household electricity for the power source. Using other power sources my result in fire, electric shock, or dmge to the mchine. Mke sure tht the plugs on the power cord re firmly inserted into the electricl outlet nd the power supply jck on the mchine. Otherwise, fire or electric shock my result. Do not insert the plug on the power cord into n electricl outlet tht is in poor condition. Turn off the min power nd remove the plug in the following circumstnces: When you re wy from the mchine After using the mchine When the power fils during use When the mchine does not operte correctly due to bd connection or disconnection During electricl storms Use only the power cord included with this mchine. Do not use extension cords or multi-plug dpters with mny other pplinces plugged in to them. Fire or electric shock my result. Do not touch the plug with wet hnds. Electric shock my result. When unplugging the mchine, lwys turn off the min power first. Alwys grsp the plug to remove it from the outlet. Pulling on the cord my dmge the cord, or led to fire or electric shock. Do not llow the power cord to be cut, dmged, modified, forcefully bent, pulled, twisted, or bundled. Do not plce hevy objects on the cord. Do not subject the cord to het. These things my dmge the cord nd cuse fire or electric shock. If the cord or plug is dmged, tke the mchine to your uthorized deler for repirs before continuing use. Unplug the power cord if the mchine is not to be used for long period of time. Otherwise fire my result. 3

16 KNOWING YOUR SEWING MACHINE Power supply Insert the plug into wll outlet. Foot controller Insert the foot controller plug into its jck/socket on the rer side of the sewing mchine. 2 Min power switch b Jck/socket connector Set the min power switch to I. b The sewing light comes on when the mchine is turned on. Memo When the mchine is turned on, the needle nd the feed dogs will mke sound when they move; this is not mlfunction. Foot controller jck/socket When connecting the foot controller, be sure to turn off the sewing mchine in order to prevent the mchine from ccidentlly being strted. When you press the foot controller down lightly, the mchine will run t low speed. When you press hrder, the mchine s speed will increse. When you tke your foot off the foot controller, the mchine will stop. c To turn off the mchine, set the min power switch to. The sewing light goes off when the mchine is turned off. te If power outge occurs while the sewing mchine is being operted, turn off the sewing mchine nd unplug the power supply cord. When restrting the sewing mchine, follow the necessry procedure to correctly operte the mchine. (For U.S.A. only) This pplince hs polrized plug (one blde wider thn the other). To reduce the risk of electric shock, this plug is intended to fit in polrized outlet only one wy. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contct qulified electricin to instll the proper outlet. Do not modify the plug in ny wy. You should mke sure tht nothing is plced on the foot controller when the mchine is not in use. Slower Fster Do not llow pieces of cloth nd dust to build up on the foot controller. Doing so could cuse fire or n electric shock. te When the foot controller is plugged in, the strt/stop button cnnot be used to strt sewing (only for s equipped with the strt/stop button). 4

17 Sewing speed controller (for s equipped with the strt/stop button) Slide the sewing speed controller to the left or right to select the desired sewing speed. Slide the sewing speed controller to the left to sew t slower speed, or slide the speed controller to the right to sew t fster speed. Chnging the initil needle position rmlly, the stright stitch (left needle position) is utomticlly selected when the sewing mchine is turned on. The mchine cn be set so tht the stright stitch (center needle position) is utomticlly selected when it is turned on. Turn off the sewing mchine. Sewing speed controller The speed set using the sewing speed controller is the foot controller s mximum sewing speed. Chnging the needle stop position rmlly, the sewing mchine is set to leve the needle in the fbric when sewing is stopped. Insted, the mchine cn be set to leve the needle rised when sewing is stopped. Turn off the sewing mchine. Hold down the side of (stitch selection b key) on the left nd turn on the sewing mchine. After turning on the sewing mchine, relese the side of (stitch selection key). Hold down the + side of (stitch selection b key) on the left nd turn on the sewing mchine. After turning on the sewing mchine, relese the + side of (stitch selection key). The initil needle position chnges to the center needle position. Memo The specified initil needle position is mintined even fter the mchine is turned off. Perform the sme opertion to chnge the initil needle position to the left needle position. The needle stop position chnges to the rised position. Memo Perform the sme opertion to chnge the needle stop position to the lowered position. 5

18 KNOWING YOUR SEWING MACHINE Cncelling the opertion beep When the sewing mchine is purchsed, it is set to beep ech time key is pressed. This setting cn be chnged so tht the mchine does not beep. Turn off the sewing mchine. Hold down the side of (stitch width b djustment key) nd turn on the sewing mchine. After turning on the sewing mchine, relese the - side of (stitch width djustment key). The mchine is now set so tht it will not beep. Memo Perform the sme opertion to chnge the setting so tht mchine beeps. 6

19 THREADING THE MACHINE Winding the bobbin This section describes how to wind the thred onto the bobbin. For detils on the fst bobbin winding, see pge 20. b c Bobbin-winding thred guide Bobbin winder shft Bobbin Only use bobbins (prt code: SA56, SFB: XA5539-5) tht hve been designed for this sewing mchine. Using other bobbins my cuse dmge to the mchine. We designed the bobbin tht comes with this mchine. If you use bobbins from other s, the mchine will not work properly. Only use the bobbin tht comes with this mchine or bobbins of the sme type (prt code: SA56, SFB: XA5539-5). Actul size.5 mm (7/6 inch) This Other s As shown, press down on the spool pin lever with your finger. The spool pin swings up. Remove the spool cp. b Do not grb the br to rise the spool pin, otherwise, the spool pin my bend or brek. Spool pin b Spool cp Be sure to rise the spool pin when winding the bobbin. The thred my become tngled if the bobbin winder is used without rising the spool pin. 7

20 KNOWING YOUR SEWING MACHINE c Fully insert the spool of thred for the bobbin onto the spool pin. Slide the spool onto the pin so tht the spool is horizontl nd the thred unwinds to the front t the bottom. Memo When sewing with fine, cross-wound thred, use the smll spool cp, nd leve smll spce between the cp nd the spool. c b d Slide the spool cp onto the spool pin. If the thred is too short, not pulled tut or held t n ngle, injuries my occur when the thred is wound round the bobbin. Turn on the sewing mchine. i While holding the end of the thred, gently j press the foot controller or press (strt/stop button) (for s equipped with the strt/ stop button) to wind the thred round the bobbin few times. Then stop the mchine. te If the sewing mchine is to be operted using the foot controller, connect the foot controller before turning on the mchine. When the foot controller is plugged in, the strt/stop button cnnot be used to strt sewing (only for s equipped with the strt/stop button). te Mke sure tht the thred is pulled s fr s possible into the pre-tension disk, otherwise the bobbin my not be wound clenly. Put the bobbin onto the bobbin winder shft h nd slide the bobbin winder shft to the right. Turn the bobbin clockwise, by hnd, until the spring on the shft slides into the notch in the bobbin. Mke sure to pull out 7 to 0 cm (2-3/4 to 3-5/6 inches) of thred from the hole on the bobbin. Spring on the shft b tch c 7 0 cm (3 4 inches) k Trim the excess thred bove the bobbin. Pull cm (3/8 inch) of thred from the hole on the bobbin. cm (3/8 inch) Mke sure you follow the instructions crefully. If you do not cut the thred completely, nd the bobbin is wound, when the thred runs low it my tngle round the bobbin nd cuse the needle to brek. 9

While holding the thred tht wrps round the pre-tension disk with your left hnd, use your right hnd to wind the free end of the thred clockwise round the bobbin five or six times. 20

23 e Pull the thred to the right nd pss it through the slit in the bobbin winder set. j Cut the thred, slide the bobbin winder shft to the left, nd then remove the bobbin from the shft. f Slit in bobbin winder set (with built-in cutter) The thred is cut to suitble length. Be sure to cut the thred s described. If the bobbin is wound without cutting the thred using the cutter built into the slit in the bobbin winder set, the thred my become tngled in the bobbin or the needle my bend or brek when the bobbin thred strts to run out. Spool pin b Mrk on the hndwheel When threding the upper thred, crefully follow the instructions. If the upper threding is not correct, the thred my become tngled or the needle my bend or brek. Never use thred weight of 20 or lower. Use the needle nd the thred in the correct combintion. For detils on the correct combintion of needles nd threds, refer to Needle types nd their uses (pge 3). Turn on the sewing mchine. b Rise the presser foot using the presser foot lever. c Rise the needle by turning the hndwheel towrd you (counterclockwise) so tht the mrk on the wheel points up, or press (needle position button) (for s equipped with the needle position button) once or twice to rise the needle. or Presser foot lever Mrk b Needle position button If the presser foot is not rised, the sewing mchine cnnot be threded correctly. Using the needle threder (for s equipped with the needle threder) Follow steps through m of the procedure in Upper threding to thred the mchine to the needle br thred guide. Lower the presser foot lever. b c The needle threder cn be used with 75/ through 00/6 home sewing mchine needle. However, the needle threder cnnot be used with 65/9 home sewing mchine needle. When using specil thred such s trnsprent nylon thred or metllic thred, the needle threder cnnot be used. Thred with thickness of 30/20 or thicker cnnot be used with the needle threder. The needle threder cnnot be used with the wing needle or the twin needle. If the needle threder cnnot be used, refer to Upper threding (pge 25). While lowering the needle threder lever, hook the thred onto the guide. n Thred the needle from front to bck nd pull out bout 5 cm (2 inches) of thred. 5 cm (2 inches) Needle holder b Needle threder lever c Guide 28

31 Fully lower the needle threder lever. d Pull the loop of the thred pssed through the g eye of the needle towrd the rer of the mchine. If the thred does not pss through the eye of the needle, strt from step c gin. Rise the presser foot lever. h Hook b Thred f While lightly holding the thred, relese the needle threder lever. The hook will pull the thred through the needle. Presser foot lever i Pss the end of the thred through the presser foot, nd then pull out bout 5 cm (2 inches) of thred towrd the rer of the mchine. 5 cm (2 inches) te If you incorrectly feed the thred you my cuse sewing problems. 29

Upper thred While holding the end of the upper thred, b rise the needle either by turning the hndwheel towrd you (counterclockwise) so tht the mrk on the wheel points up or by pressing (needle position button) (for s equipped with the needle position button) once or twice. or Upper thred b Lower thred For s equipped with the quick-set bobbin You cn begin sewing immeditely without drwing up the bobbin thred. When sewing gthers or drts, you cn drw up the lower thred by hnd so tht some thred will be left over. Before you drw up the lower thred, put the bobbin bck in. Pss the thred long the slit in the direction of the rrow, nd leve it there without cutting it. 33 REPLACING THE NEEDLE This section provides informtion on sewing mchine needles. Needle precutions Be sure to observe the following precutions concerning the hndling of the needle. Filure to observe these precutions is extremely dngerous. Be sure to red nd crefully follow the instructions below. Only use home sewing mchine needles. Use of ny other needle my bend the needle or dmge the mchine. Never use bent needles. Bent needles cn esily brek, possibly resulting in injury. Use the bll point needle for best results when sewing ptterns using monogrmming foot N. The fctory recommended needle is HG-4BR (Orgn). Schmetz needles JERSEY BALL POINT 30/705H SUK 90/4 my be used s substitute. Trnsprent nylon thred Use 90/4 to 00/6 needle, regrdless of the fbric or thred. The pproprite fbric, thred nd needle combintions re shown in the tble on the previous pge. If the combintion of the fbric, thred nd needle is not correct, prticulrly when sewing thick fbrics (such s denim) with thin needles (such s 65/9 to 75/), the needle my bend or brek. In ddition, the stitching my be uneven or puckered or there my be skipped stitches. Incorrect needle If the distnce between the needle nd the flt surfce is not even, the needle is bent. Do not use bent needle. Flt surfce Replcing the needle Replce the needle s described below. Use the disc-shped screwdriver nd needle tht hs been determined to be stright ccording to the instructions in Checking the needle. Rise the needle by turning the hndwheel towrd you (counterclockwise) so tht the mrk on the wheel points up. (With s equipped with (needle position button), rise the needle by pressing once or twice.) Checking the needle Sewing with bent needle is extremely dngerous since the needle my brek while the mchine is being operted. Before using the needle, plce the flt side of the needle on flt surfce nd check tht the distnce between the needle nd the flt surfce is even. or 2 Mrk b Needle position button Turn off the sewing mchine. b Flt side b Needle type mrking Correct needle Before replcing the needle, be sure to turn off the sewing mchine, otherwise injuries my occur if the foot controller or the strt/ stop button is ccidentlly pressed nd the mchine strts sewing. 35 Lower the presser foot lever. c e With the flt side of the needle towrd the rer of the mchine, insert the needle until it touches the needle stopper. d Presser foot lever Before replcing the needle, plce fbric or pper under the presser foot to prevent the needle from flling into the hole in the needle plte. Hold the needle with your left hnd, nd then use disc-shped screwdriver to turn the needle clmp screw counterclockwise to remove the needle. te The needle cn be removed by simply loosening the needle clmp screw bout one turn. (If the needle clmp screw is loosened too much, the needle clmp (which holds the needle) my fll off. Therefore, do not loosen the needle clmp screw too much.) Needle stopper While holding the needle with your left hnd, f use the disc-shped screwdriver to tighten the needle clmp screw by turning it clockwise. Instll the twin needle in the sme wy. Disc-shped screwdriver b Needle clmp screw Do not pply strong force when loosening or tightening the needle clmp screw, otherwise certin prts of the sewing mchine my be dmged. Be sure to insert the needle until it touches the needle stopper nd securely tighten the needle clmp screw with the disc-shped screwdriver, otherwise the needle my brek or dmge my result. 33

36 KNOWING YOUR SEWING MACHINE Sewing with the twin needle We hve designed your mchine so you cn sew with this needle nd two top threds. You cn use the sme color or two different colors of thred for mking decortive stitches. For detils on the stitches tht cn be sewn with the twin needle, refer to STITCH SETTINGS (pge 8). Twin needle b Extr spool pin Use only twin needles tht hve been mde for this mchine (prt code: ). Other needles could brek, nd dmge the mchine. Do not sew with bent needles. The needle could brek nd injure you. You cn not use the needle threder to thred the twin needle. Insted, thred the twin needle by hnd, from front to bck. Using the needle threder my dmge the mchine. When using the twin needle, be sure to select n pproprite stitch, otherwise the needle my brek or the mchine my be dmged. Select stitch width of 5.0 mm (3/6 inch) or less, otherwise the needle my brek or the mchine my be dmged. b c Instll the twin needle. For detils on instlling needle, refer to Replcing the needle (pge 32). Thred the upper thred for the left needle. For detils, refer to steps through l of Upper threding (pge 25). Mnully thred the left needle with the upper thred. Pss the thred through the eye of the needle from the front to the bck. d Insert the extr spool pin onto the end of the bobbin winder shft. Bobbin winder shft b Extr spool pin c Thred spool e Instll the thred spool nd thred the upper thred. Memo When setting the thred spool, set it so tht the thred winds off from the front of the spool. 34

Without pssing the thred through the g needle br thred guide, mnully thred the right needle. Pss the thred through the eye of the needle from the front to the bck. j k Select stitch. For detils on selecting stitch, refer to Selecting stitch (pge 39). For detils on the stitches tht cn be sewn with the twin needle, refer to STITCH SETTINGS (pge 8). After djusting the stitch width, slowly turn the hndwheel towrd you (counterclockwise) nd check tht the needle does not touch the presser foot. If the needle hits the presser foot, the needle my bend or brek. Strt sewing. For detils on strting to sew, refer to Strting to sew (pge 4). Two lines of stitching re sewn prllel to ech other. Attch zigzg foot J. h For detils on chnging the presser foot, refer to Replcing the presser foot (pge 36). te Models equipped with needle threder You cnnot use the needle threder to thred the twin needle. Insted, thred the twin needle by hnd, from front to bck. Using the needle threder my dmge the mchine. When using the twin needle, be sure to ttch zigzg foot J, otherwise the needle my brek or the mchine my be dmged. Turn on the sewing mchine. i te When using the twin needle, the stitches my become bunched together, depending on the types of thred nd fbric tht re used. If this occurs, increse the stitch length. For detils on djusting the stitch length, refer to Adjusting the stitch length nd width (pge 40). When chnging the sewing direction, be sure to rise the needle from the fbric, nd then rise the presser foot lever nd turn the fbric. Otherwise the needle my brek or the mchine my be dmged.
