1 Homespun Quilter s Guild Pieces & Stitches Newsletter December, 2013 Temporary Co-editors: Rose Schroeder and Joyce Jones Merry Christmas everyone! Thank you to everyone for helping with the newsletter. It is amazing what quilters can do when they come together to get something done. Linda Buckner is helping to put something together for our advertising. Please be patient and we will have that up and going soon. Please support our advertisers. Stitches: GUILD MEETING: Christmas Parteeeeeey! Monday, December 16th at 6:30 p.m. at Lakewood Christian Church BRING POT LUCK! We will have drinks, paper goods, ice available. PROGRAM for December: More information listed below. BOARD MEETING: No board meeting is scheduled for December. Please feel free to come early and visit. Pieces: PROGRAM Information: Hi everyone! I hope that you enjoyed Jolene Mershon's trunk show and tips for entering your quilts in quilt shows! I was so blown away by her talent and the way she presented her quilts!! Many thanks to Joyce Jones for suggesting Jolene for our guild presentation!! CHRISTMAS PARTY!! Yes, it's almost time!!! Don't forget to bring your favorite covered dish and your projects (remember, we're having both a "regular" show and tell, and a Christmas/Holiday show and tell. Your holiday show and tell projects don't have to be a quilt any holiday sewing projects would be great!! If you have any questions, please feel free to me! (suepanderson@gmail.com) See you next week! UPCOMING PROGRAMS: January David Werther, Quilters Connection David is a Singer Featherweight historian, salesman, and repairman from Quilters Connection in Dallas. He will speak to us about the history of and general information on Singer Featherweights. If you have a Singer Featherweight with a specific
2 problem, lease let me know at OR call me at , as he will be glad to stay and see if he can fix your Featherweight's issue after his presentation! February- Patty Pickle Patty will share her technique for "Interfacing Turned Invisible Machine Applique". I had the opportunity to meet her at the TAQG meeting in November she is knowledgeable and a real hoot! I think you will love her! March - Scrappy Quilts Quilt Challenge! During the judging, we will be honored to have Officer Steve Dietrich from the Waco PD. Officer Dietrich will give a presentation on personal safety. April - Pending May - Mary Ruth Smith, Ph.D., Baylor University Dr. Smith is a Professor of Art at Baylor, whose area of expertise is fiber arts and fabric surface design. She will give a presentation of her work, as well as other quilters' work. She will also speak to alternative quilting materials and techniques. We are really honored to have her! COMMUNITY SERVICE Information: From Karen Woodward: THANKS to those who have turned in fabric for our Community Service projects. It is greatly appreciated. Please keep it coming. If you will be cutting the fabric for us, please turn in 5 and/or 6 inch squares and 2.5 stripes with a minimum of a 6 inch length. We will have pillowcase kits and quilt kits to put together at the December meeting. We have 3 quilt tops completed that now need to be quilted and bound these will be available for pick-up also. At the December meeting there will be several pieces of ultra suede fabric, a PVC quilt frame and a silver studded pillowcase top available to the highest bidder. These items were all donated to the guild, so all money collected will be going to the guild. The items will be labeled with the size of the piece on a table set-up with a bid sheet for each. Please just follow the directions on the bid sheet. I will announce at the meeting when the bidding will stop. There were a couple of small pieces that I put together into some scrap bags that will also be available for bid-great for appliqué! We can still turn in Christmas stockings for Care Net. Please bring to the meeting any small size toiletries and /or small baby items that can be used to fill the stockings. Feel
3 free to also donate money and I ll get items to fill the stockings and take to Care Net before Christmas. Are you doing the charm square exchange each month? If you are and not quite sure what to do with some of the colors you are getting back, feel free to donate them to Community Service!! We will add them to our grouping of 5 inch squares to make some scrap quilts. Baby Quilts this will be our first Sit and Sew project on January 25 th. We will have several kits cut-out and ready to put together. But if you have your own fabric that you want to donate or work on at the Sit and Sew, please have them be around 36 inches square. We are using a piece of flannel and cotton. They can be with or without batting depending on the fabric and how light or heavy it is. We will be using a pillow case type of method on making these baby quilts so they don t need to have binding. Instructions will be available and we will demonstrate how to do these if needed. We have several printed flannels and could use some solid colors on the cotton piece if you have some to donate. As a reminder here are the dates and details on what we will be doing for our upcoming Sit and Sews. Dates for the Sit and Sew in the 1 st quarter of next year are listed below. Times will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; we can be flexible with this timing if 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. works better. Come whenever you can during this time if you can t make the whole session. 1/25 Saturday Baby Quilts 2/13 Thursday Baby Quilts 2/22 Saturday Bibs and Burp Pads 3/13 Thursday Bibs and Burp Pads 3/22 Saturday Walker Caddies What you need to bring: sewing machine and whatever you usually need for sewing; straight pins, rotary cutter and mat ( if you need to cut or trim up fabric), walking foot to do quilting on the blanket, thread, safety pins for your quilt sandwich, a corner point turner ( if you have one), and your name tag. We will have pillowcase kits and a couple of quilt tops ready to be put together at November s meeting. On the quilt tops, we are grouping cut blocks that go somewhat together. Please feel free to be creative and add fabric you might have to either enlarge or enhance the look of the quilt. Return the completed top to us so we can then get the batting and backing for it. However, if you are so inclined, feel free to also complete the quilt! We will also have some quilt tops at our Sit and Sew in case we get finished with all of the precut kits and need more to work on. Thanks, Karen.
