Thanks for helping to make HQG the *Friendliest Quilt Guild in Texas* PROGRAM NEWS We had a really good turn out to hear last month's program on scrap quilts. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as Glenda and I did. And with so many people taking the workshop, it really made for one of our most affordable programs. A special thank you to Margaret Blanton for opening up her home to Ms. Brown. Next month's speaker has cancelled, so there will be no program. We will be swearing in the new officers, and may have information about our new website. Hope to see everyone at the next meeting. 3 Mark Your Calendars! Deadline for articles and reports for the June Newsletter is Friday, June 21. Thank you! Please send reports to MINUTES OF THE HOMESPUN QUILTERS GUILD MEETING MAY 20, 2013 President Rose Schroeder called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. and recognized Debbie Dewey, Second Vice- President/Membership. Debbie reported 52 members in attendance, including two new members, and 87 community service hours recorded. Karen Curlee, Sunshine & Shadows chairman, stated that Lori Cook has had difficult times recently caring for her ailing mother. Susan Hutyra announced that her daughter Tina had graduated from design school. Lynn Zander commented on the devastating tornado that struck in Oklahoma today. Susan reported that her mother-in-law has been ill, but is doing well. Liz Brisby s grandson has been awarded another scholarship for his vocal talent. Libby Lehman has suffered a massive stroke and cards are requested for her. Joyce Jones reported that Paula Barnes husband had died recently due to a heart attack. Becky Jones is celebrating an anniversary. Karen s son has won an award at Dell due to obtaining seven patents. Lynn Roddy Brown presented Simple Strategies for Scrap Quilts and displayed a number of beautiful quilts illustrating her techniques for creating unique, one-of-a-kind scrappy quilts. She stressed the importance of value and texture and recommended viewing block placement 15 feet from the design wall. She also suggested trading small blocks such as half-square triangles, rails and four patches to increase the range of fabrics in scrappy quilts. Her presentation was entertaining and helpful. After a brief break, the nominating committee submitted the following candidates for office for the coming year: Rose Schroeder, President; Sue Anderson, First Vice-President/Programs; Debbie Dewey, Second Vice-President/Membership; Janine Hoffpauir, Secretary; and Barbara Burr, Treasurer. No nominations were received from the floor and Lynn Zander offered a motion to elect the slate as submitted by acclamation. After second, the officers were approved by voice vote. Judy Steward thanked members for providing fat quarters for goody bags and also thanked Rita Schormann for donating a small quilt for the TAQG Rally Day July 13. Our guild will have a raffle quilt for display and tickets will be ordered. Rose stated if there were no objections, the quilt raffle will be held on the last day of the Heart of Texas Fair. Linda Buckner reported on the guild retreat scheduled for June and indicated that payment is due tonight. Two slots are open and if no members request to use them, they will be go to non-members. Linda thanked members for the bazaar items that have been turned in and stated that checkbook covers are requested for next month. She has directions for the checkbook covers. Karen announced that a quilting frame is for sale for $175 and she has further details for anyone who is interested. She also reported on progress on our new website. University High School students, under direction of their teacher, are competing on this project and it is hoped a decision will be made soon. Karen also noted that they have been promised cookies and possibly a quilt showing in appreciation of their efforts. Rose noted that the treasurer s report is available. She stated that work on the new budget will begin next month. A proposed draft is available and new items could be added if needed. B-O-M blocks were won by Aileen Boucher. A completed incubator cover is on display with Community Service items. A pattern is available if others are interested in making them. Carol Nelson thanked Margaret Blanton for hosting tonight s speaker. Door prizes were distributed to a number of lucky winners. Since our speaker for next month had to cancel, other plans will be made for our program. It was noted that Dawn, Susan and Judy have received quilt donations for disaster victims at West. A large number of beautiful quilts created by our talented members were displayed for Show & Tell. Meeting was adjourned at 8:25 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Jerry Mitchell, Secretary
