Thanks for picking up the gavel! 1
President s Notes Most of you probably know me from chairing the Community Service committee for the guild, my name is Karen Woodard. I didn't want the guild to be without a president, so I volunteered...and now I'm a bit nervous about it. But we have a great board of officers and other chair members, so I'm sure together we can move the guild forward into its next year. Because there are some great co-chairs on the community service committee, I will be able to continue to chair this committee with their help. I feel that we have some good momentum going so I want to follow this through for at least another year. A little about myself since I still feel very new to the guild and Waco - after a year being here I still get confused on Valley Mills road! I joined the guild last year in June since I had just retired from Frito- Lay and now living here during the week - no more weekly commuting up to Frisco (Dallas area) for work. I started garment sewing when I was 7 making the usual pair of PJs. Then took actual sewing classes and made my first dress - I still have a scrap from that dress. In high school I took "Home EC" so I would have time to sew. With my teacher's help, I made a pink linen lined suit. It turned out great and I was pretty proud of myself. Too bad I grew out of it so fast! Then in 1969 I married my husband Jerry and informed him that one of the first major purchases we would make was a sewing machine. Surprisingly he was perfectly okay with that, so I bought a Kenmore. I continued to do all types of garment sewing for myself and family. But in 1993 I took a quilting class at a store that opened very close to our house in Houston. And as the usual saying goes, the "rest is history". I haven't stopped quilting since then. I still do some garment sewing particularly for my granddaughters. I have just loved all of the camaraderie and friendships I have made over the years with my quilting. Belonging to a quilt bee and participating regularly is so much cheaper than going to a psychologist to tell your troubles to! Your friends help you through the difficult times and will cry and laugh with you when needed. They will give advice freely too whether you want it or not. So together let's continue to make this guild a fun and friendly group. Encourage others to join us. There is always something new we can learn from each other, so the more the merrier. Any ideas you might have for the guild, please let myself or someone else on the board know so we can discuss it A big thanks to Sue Anderson for some great programs she lined up this past year and we are off to a great start with Sue Nickels in June. You won't want to miss this meeting. See you there. Happy quilting to all of you, Karen. 2

Hi Guild Members Program News Submitted by Sue Anderson, 1 st Vice President Programs Since this is my last report as Programs person, I just want to say thanks to all of you for making this experience really great for me! It has been fabulous to meet and get to know you all. Thanks especially to Rose, Debbie Dewey, and all of this year s board members, and to Barbara B., Karen C., Jerry M. and all of my new Bee friends. You gave me lots and lots of support, help and most of all, friendship! THANK YOU! Best wishes to Tina for a wonderful new year of programs! I am so excited for Sue Nickels visit in June! We are thrilled to have Sue speak to us at our June meeting, and she will do her Raw Edge Machine Appliqué workshop for us the next day, Tuesday, June 17 th. I will have the sign-up sheet and copies of the general information and supply list for the workshop at the May meeting. Sue s guild presentation will be on Machine Quilting for Today s Quilts. She will share her progression from hand quilter to the machine quilter she is today. This personal journey includes slides of Sue s quilts and her sister, Pat Holly s quilts as well as quilts from machine quilters who have influenced the current machine quilting trends. Sue will bring a selection of her quilts to share and provide time for discussion at the end, so be sure to bring your machine quilting questions! Sue s workshop will be Basic Stitched Raw Edge Machine Appliqué. Learn all about stitched raw edge machine appliqué in this workshop. A small amount of fusible is used to seal the edge yet leaves the block soft. The machine blanket stitching makes this project secure for washing. Students will work on a practice sampler of ideas in class to learn the technique. Feel confident to work on any appliqué pattern after taking this class! The cost is $40 as of May 16 th ; we only have 5 spaces left!! July Guild Garage Sale We re having a Garage Sale! Purchase a table for $10 to use to sell your old sewing Stuff (table money will go to the guild), ( Stuff $$ goes to you!)!! You still have a couple of months to clear out those out-ofcontrol sewing areas! (If you have fabric that you want to ditch, please don t forget that you may donate it to our great Community Service group.) Don t have enough Stuff to have a table of your own? No problem, share a table! We would like to raise some extra money for our guild and our new board, so let s do it! I ll have table reservation sheet at our next meeting!! August, - Dixie Bradbury, Easy Half-Square Triangles with Template Techniques Dixie and her husband, Frank, bought an existing sewing machine sales and service business in 1990 in San Antonio. She hired a lady to teach quilting classes, and the business which started with 100 bolts of fabric eventually became 3700 bolts. After the passing of her husband, the quilt shop became her reason to keep going. What was the store name? Seventh Heaven Quilt Shop in San Antonio. Dixie owned her business for nearly 23 years, finally retiring towards the end of A few years before her retirement, Dixie purchased the copyright from Shirley Grenridzig of Templates Techniques. These templates help the quilter make accurate, easy and fast half-square triangles. Dixie is now able to go to guilds, quilt shops and quilt shows teaching and introducing these great templates to many more people! It keeps her in touch with her joy of quilting and the wonderful people she has met and continues to meet. We are really excited to have Dixie share her templates and her stories with us in August! September or October Community Service Sew-In! Karen Woodard will provide additional information at a later date 4
November Brenda Asmus, certified from Marti Michell educator, lecture and workshop! We are excited to have Brenda Asmus visit our guild in November! She will give a presentation on Tempting Quilts from My Template Toolbox. These will, of course, be Marti Michell s Perfect Patchwork templates! There are lots of fun patterns made with these templates. Also, Brenda will conduct a workshop, on the Tuesday after our November meeting. Stay tuned more details to follow! We have lots of great things going on in the Homespun Quilt Guild!! Spread the word, and bring your friends!! Thanks to all of you for a great year!! Supply List for Sue Nickels' Workshop Fabric:100% cotton (I pre-wash and press my fabrics) Background block- 12 ½ square (starch before coming to class) Appliqué Fabric- 5-6 small pieces (approx. 10" squares) for appliqué flowers and leaves. Cut 1" x 18" bias strip for a stem. Thread: 40/3 or 50/3 weight cotton* in colors to coordinate with appliqué fabric. I like Mettler 50/3ply thread and/or Superior 40/3ply King Tut Tone on Tones by Sue Nickels *Sue will have some King Tut thread for sale in workshop Open Toe Appliqué Foot: A MUST for machine appliqué (sometimes called an open toe embroidery foot) [This foot does not usually come with your machine attachments and will need to be purchased separately. It is a foot that is completely open in front of the needle and gives good visibility for stitching. It may be called something different for different brand machines (open toe embroidery for example). It is the #20 foot on the Bernina. If you have any questions about this foot, please me ] Sewing Machine: Blanket stitch used. Please bring the sewing machine you will be using to do the techniques successfully at home. Sometimes small travel machines don t have the stitches and the ability to do the techniques properly. Bring your sewing machines tray table or extension bar- just having the free arm can make stitching more difficult. Don t forget foot pedal and power cord! Scissors- small embroidery type for precise cutting of appliqué pieces. Sewing Machine Needles- 80/12 sharp (Schmetz brand called Microtex sharp) ½ yard paper-backed Fusible Web- I use Soft Fuse and will have this for purchase in class. Please do not bring Heat and Bond products or Lite Steam a Seam 2 or Steam a Seam 2 (Lite Steam a Seam is fine) Basic Sewing Supplies- straight pins, hand sewing needle, extra bobbins, pencil, pencil sharpener, fabric marking pencil, small tweezers. Spray Starch (I use Best Press, Niagara or Faultless original weight) [THE GUILD WILL SUPPLY IRONING STATIONS, EXTENSION CORDS AND MULTI-PLUT STRIPS] PLEASE NOTE: The very small mini-irons do not work for Sue's technique. Sue s book Stitched Raw Edge Appliqué is a companion for the workshop, not required 5

Community Service Submitted by Karen Woodard Thanks everyone for turning in quilts during our last meeting. We got in a total of 12 completed quilts ready to get donated, 17 pillowcases and several bibs and bur pads. Please keep up the great work even during the upcoming summer months. Unfortunately the needs of the groups we are serving don't stop just because it's the typical time for vacations. SIT and SEWS - we will start up again with the sit and sews in September, with the first one being 9/11. The agenda for this session will probably be baby quilts. More to come on this and the dates for the last quarter of the year. BEES - to get more quilts completed with the fabric that has been donated to us I wanted to ask if any of the current bees in the guild would like to take this on for a project for the next couple of months. Let me know if your group might be interested in helping out and I'll coordinate this with you. SUMMER ACTIVITY - if you are like me, I look forward to having my granddaughter spend some time with me during the summer. And she is into quilting already! So I thought there are probably many other Grandma's (Nana's or whatever the kids are calling you) that will have their grand kids visiting too. If there is enough interest, I can try and organize a sewing session where we can get our grand kids together and have some time with them. I think it would be great for them to sew with other kids interested in the art of quilting / sewing also. Let me know if your interested and what dates you will have them - if you are really lucky they might even live in this area! My address is kawoodardaquilter@yahoo.com. I'll get with you sometime towards the middle to end of June if there is enough interest to make this worth while. UFO Challenge - as you saw at the May meeting two of our members completed a total of 7 quilts between them. The "little push" of the UFO challenge helped get these completed. It's not too late to join if you too need a "little push". You just might get to be on the court of the Queen. The latest court member is Karen Curlee. Happy quilting, Karen. Door Prize Winners $1 Judy Clements (2); Rose Schroeder; Lorene Baker 50 cents Karen Fleuriet; Carolyn Self; Evelyn Hackney 25 cents Carolyn Self (3); Aileen Boucher (4); Kenita Fendley Show & Tell Ginny Quieor Wool Appliqué Evelyn Hackney Cat Quilt, Runner from Class Karen Curlee 4 UFO s Marie Biles Jelly Roll Quilt Jan Rogers 3 Kids Quilts Judy Steward Flag Quilt, 2 12 x12 Quilts Crazy Fools: Currently there are only 3 members: Jackie Lott, Barbara Burr & Debbie Dewey.
