1 Homespun Pieces and Stitches June, 2017 A publication of the Homespun Quilters Guild 12 th MONDAY Board Meeting, 6:00 Clara Jean Matustik s, 2724 Cedar Pt. Dr., Waco All guild members are invited to attend. 19 th MONDAY Guild meeting- 6:30 Guild Challenge- Blocks with Rita, New officers Instillation 22 nd Thursday Budget Meeting with outgoing and incoming 6:30 Lakewood Christian Church 23rd FRIDAY Information for the JULY newsletter sent to guildnews@hot.rr.com. Greetings, I have had so much fun with our guild this past month. First, there was Sit and Sew and then Community Service Night. If you have not attended one of these events please make an effort to attend the next one. Both are fun and fantastic opportunities to get to know your fellow members better. This will be my last note as President of our guild. This last year has been great and I have truly enjoyed my time serving our guild. I was quite nervous when I began my term. But I did not need to be. Our board and this guild are truly the best there is. We have all worked together to grow our guild and fulfill our mission this past year. I am proud of everything we have done. If we were not moving I would happily serve another year. I wish there was enough time to thank everyone individually. Please allow me to express my sincerest gratitude to all of you. You have helped me to grow as a quilter and more importantly a person. I truly appreciate each and every one of you. We hope to return to Texas to retire in a few years. I look forward to when our paths will cross again. Until then may your days be filled with fabric and your bobbin always full. Cheers, Kathleen President's Note 1

2 Block Challenge The June Homespun Quilters Guild will be the venue for the showcase of the projects using the Challenge Block Patterns. So, if you have not finished yours and your project, you still have until June 19 th. [ I still have copies of the patterns. If you missed some, let me know and I will get them to you by return mail.] The categories are as follows: A project containing one to three of the blocks. A project containing four to six of the blocks. A project containing seven to nine of the blocks. A project containing ten to twelve of the blocks. A project representing the Best Use of Color. I am looking forward to seeing what wonderful quilt/quilt/another project you have created. 4 Sew What s New? Submitted by Barbara Burr What does a beautiful red, white, and blue Quilt of Valor, a magical wooden seam roller, and Russian potato vodka have in common? All were topics of discussion when Waco invaded the Friendship Quilt Guild of Brenham, Texas. Quilters love to share their craft, so when the Brenham guild invited our president Kathleen Thompson and president-elect Karen Curlee to speak at their meeting, it was a great excuse for a Road Trip! Kathleen brought her husband, Mark. Lisa Williams, Joyce Jones, and Barbara Burr tagged along with Karen. Opening the program was a surprise gift of the Quilt of Valor for Mark, who- -by the way--is a doctor and the Commander of the Medical Center at Ft. Hood. This one, however, caught the Colonel by complete surprise and he actually blushed as a very proud wife stood quietly by. Kathleen went on to teach all of us many tricks about bindings and demonstrated a fascinating array of quilting tools for sale, including that handy wooden seam roller, of which she completely sold out! Karen followed up with an entire suitcase full of tools, many straight from Harbor Freight, that you would never dream of using with quilts, but which actually work quite well and really come in handy. From the snake light coiled around her neck to the value of skateboarder s tape, her hints and suitcase of secrets were helpful to all. Oh, and about that vodka? Well, just mix it with distilled water and use it as natural starch. With our tummies, full of hot coffee and a variety of home-made cookies, we said our farewells to new friends and headed north to hearth and home. We all know that quilters are a very special breed of people, always welcoming and friendly, loving to learn, and eager to share their knowledge. Aren t we lucky to be among them? 4

5 TAQG RALLY DAY 2017 July 8, 2017, you have a unique opportunity to attend a free day of quilt related fun. That is the date of Rally Day We hope that you have attended a Rally Day in the past, but if you have not let me share with you what will happen at Rally Day This year's event will be held at Mimosa Lane Baptist Church, 1233 North Beltline Rd, Mesquite, Texas. 6 THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES CINDY BRUCE , The Homespun Quilters Guild sponsors many quilting bees to which members can belong. There are bees that meet at night as well as bees that meet during the day. Some bees may be highly organized where there is always some kind of group effort going on, and there are very hang-loose bees whose members simply enjoy getting together to sew, talk and maybe eat! Some bees meet in public places while others meet in member s homes. Bees may have limited membership because of space. If you are interested in joining a bee or forming a new Bee, please let me know and I will work with you. Raffle Quilt 2018: Cindy Bruce and Judy Mathews made the houses. Chris Bryant assembled them in columns. Debbie Dewey is working on the applique which will hopefully be finished by mid-june. The assembly can then be completed by Karen Jeffrey. Linda Buckner will do the quilting. The finishing touches will be done by Rose Schroeder and Melva Magee. The 12 ½ Challenge Blocks will be flowers. Any method can be used. o Examples will be brought to Guild, and some patterns may be in the Newsletter. Bee Keeper: Cindy There were 19 people attending the recent meeting concerning Bees and their possible involvement in making the 2019 Raffle Quilt. Currently there are no volunteers. 2 people want to join a Bee. o Cindy will bring forms to Guild. Karen C. suggested a 2019 Theme of A Quilt 4 All Seasons. Perhaps making 4 small quilts would not seem as intimidating as making a large one. And it could include people from various Bees or those who are not in a Bee. Refer all ideas and suggestions to Cindy Bruce, including fabrics, budget, other themes, etc. The Board would also like to devise a plan to coordinate the Raffle Quilt Drawing in the same year as the Show s Theme. That may mean not making a quilt one year. Submit any suggestions and ideas to the Board. Facebook / Website: Karen F. didn t have anything new to add. Debbie Stubbs is ready to take it over. Nominating Committee: Evelyn We still have no nominees for Education.
