1 Homespun Pieces And Stitches A publication of the Homespun Quilters Guild August 2016 Calendar of Events 8 th MONDAY Board Meeting, 6:00 Clara Jean Matustik s, 2724 Cedar Pt. Dr., Waco All guild members are invited to attend. 15 h Guild meeting/program- Bi Annual Garage Sale 19 th Information for the September newsletter sent to guildnews@hot.rr.com I really enjoyed our program in July. Rita s quilts are beautiful!! I am inspired. Thank you Rita!!! I am looking forward to seeing the creations from the workshop during future Show and Tells. Some use paint. I use fabric. I am an ARTIST! Rita handed out similar tags to everyone at the meeting. Mine will be a permanent addition to my sewing room to remind me that I am an Artist. For a long time I did not consider myself an artist. I believed that to be an artist your work needed to hang in a gallery, be showcased in a special exhibit, be performed in a theatre, or an opera house, you get the idea. I don t remember when my first piece of art graced the fridge but I do remember when I hung that first piece for each of our daughters. The light in their eyes, the huge smile on their face and I swear they stood a little taller, they were so proud. To them that Fridge was more special than the Louvre. I have entered some of my quilts in shows. Many did not receive any recognition, but some did. I remember the very first time I won a ribbon for one of my quilts. I was shocked and I got a little misty, I was just so touched, I am sure I stood a little taller. 1

2 Most of my art hangs on the back of a couch or across a bed, is draped on the lawn at a picnic or waits folded up in the trunk of a car for it s next showing. But I am pretty sure that each time my art is touched it brings a smile to someone s face and that is a felling that I will always treasure. Many of us walked away from the meeting saying, Wow, I could never do that. I believe we do not give ourselves enough credit. The basic definition of an artist is someone who creates. I challenge you all to create something new you may just surprise yourself. The end result may not hang at Houston, but I am sure it will look absolutely amazing on the Fridge. Cheers, Kathleen MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY This year s directory includes: The membership directories will be distributed at the August meeting. Please notice there are several changes and additions. 3 Homespun Quilters <> Membership News Membership is booming. We currently have 101 paid memberships. 53 members were present at the meeting in July and we had 11 visitors, with one visitor becoming a member. Also we had 180 hours of community service. Most of our visitors had been invited by members, so keep inviting your friends. Maybe we can reach 125 members this year. See you in August. 4 Thanks to Sally Johnston for volunteering to help with the Silent Auction at the quilt show. Homespun Quilters <> Community Service News Several quilts and receiving blankets were turned in at the guild meeting, almost all of them being made from your stash! Thanks a bunch, just keep 'em coming. If you were not at the guild meeting you would have missed my request for school supplies for the Family Abuse Center. Please watch for the school ads and pick up a few basic supplies for these kids. The range is from Kindergarten through High School. Besides the basic supplies they can use backpacks and calculators for the different levels of school. I will have a box at the next meeting for collection of these supplies. Thanks in advance for your help with this. During a typical year they will service about 300 children, so whatever you can do to help them will be appreciated by them. Karen W. Please remember to bring school supplies for the Family Abuse center. 4

13 THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES 2mbership Contact: Pricilla Ne Brown, Bee Keeper, (c) The Homespun Quilters Guild sponsors many quilting bees to which members can belong. There are bees that meet at night as well as bees that meet during the day. Some bees may be highly organized where there is always some kind of group effort going on, and there are very hang-loose bees whose members simply enjoy getting together to sew, talk and maybe eat! Some bees meet in public places while others meet in member s homes. Bees may have limited membership because of space. If you are interested in joining a bee or forming a new Bee, please let me know and I will work with you.
