1 Volume 40 No. 1 September 2018 Parksville Quilt House Quilters Guild PO Box 1177, Parksville, BC V9P 2H2 Purpose of the Guild: To promote and encourage interest in the excellence of quilting MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT It s September already! Where did the summer go? Oh yeah, enjoying family and friends who all want to be island bound. Our 13 th quilt show was a stellar success. Enough thanks can t be given to all of you for your time and involvement. Our guild is so strong because of you. Now it s time to get going again. We have a lot of plans for the coming year. The program team has the year set, workshops are planned, retreats are filling up, Comfort Quilts is working on the kits and production. We have just secured a larger storage unit for the guild and it will make all of our pick-ups and drop-offs easy. For those who use it for show items, quilt days, Comfort Quilts, retreats and the many other items we store, it is well organized and easy to access all of the items you need. We have a lot of photos in storage that need to be looked at, maybe digitized and perhaps even books made up for each year. Any skilled person/people interested? We are working on the revised website and thank you to all who responded to the survey. More on that next month. The Facebook page is up and running thanks to Chrisanne and Marlene. Check it out on the Parksville Quilt House Quilters Guild page. I look forward to seeing you all next month as we start the year off on Sept. 17 th. ~ Elaine Next Meeting September 17 Doors open at 12:30 pm Day meeting 1:00 pm Evening meeting 6:30 pm (doors open at 6:00 pm) Parksville Community Conference Centre 132 Jensen Ave E, Parksville Coffee & Treats If your last name begins with one of the following letters, please bring treats to whichever meeting you attend: S T U V W X Y Z Coffee and tea by donation Please bring your own mug Remember Coffee Mug and Food Name Tag Membership Card Before you leave home, check your for a possible meeting cancellation. 2 SEPTEMBER PROGRAM Not only is Kismet Quilts, from Port Alberni, our merchant for September, but they are also taking over the stage as our presenters. Lynne and Bruce from Kismet are long time supporters of our Guild. Kismet really does it all. They stock some of the most beautiful quilting fabrics on Vancouver Island, have a fantastic selection of notions, teach a wide range of classes, and are happy to help you finish your project with their Long Arm service. There is no question that the Kismet team truly loves quilting. Their presentation will provide that extra little nudge you need to get your creative juices flowing for your fall and winter projects. Sharing the September Program is our amazing Comfort Quilt Coordinator, Chrisanne Kotzian. You may have seen Chrisanne taking pictures at some of the Comfort Quilt gatherings. Now, you will see the outcome. Chrisanne has promised a funny behind the scenes look at Comfort Quilts. ~ Debra Wortley Needed: Evening Refreshments Volunteers Our evening Refreshments group has moved on to Comfort Quilts so we need 2 or 3 people to take this on. 16 SEW-ALONG Topsy Turvy Sew-Along 60 x 72 by Sara Medd Choosing your fabrics: I envisioned this top as a scrap project, but some solids distracted me so that's what my sample is made of. I asked my mom to make another version and she chose 30's reproductions and used a piano key border. Each of our examples uses a uniform background, but a scrappy one would do as well if the value is consistent. We chose light backgrounds with mediums and darks in the blocks. This would also work with the lights and darks reversed. At the September meeting, please take a photo of each of the tops to aid in choosing your fabrics. I will have the tops present at each meeting till the end of the year. Unfortunately, I won't be at the September meeting but the tops will be! There will be six steps, one each month starting in October, with the last one having the border options. I will do my best to write clear instructions, but please ask if me if you have any questions! The instructions will be on the website early in each month. The blocks I used are all old favorites except the big ones, which I learned were from a now-defunct magazine, Hearth and Home. I loved the varied but simple elements. They are a bit involved but the results are nice. This top has great practice in HST s. The stitch and flip corners have cut-offs large enough for a bonus project! I am a pretty thrifty cutter. These are the approximate amounts I used: 3m background and inner float border.5m mediums for blocks 2.2-3m darks for blocks.2m for optional flange 1.8m for optional solid border and binding (I don't like pieced outer borders) 118 scraps, med or dk for optional piano key border, cut 2 1/2 x 4 1/2.6m for binding of a piano key border to coordinate with your fabric choices I hope you'll join in. I can't wait to see the varied results! ~ Sara Medd Page 16 Quilt Talk September 2018

19 The Circle of Giving, Beautiful New Fabrics and Trying New Things Last spring I had taken a friend, a quilter, with me to deliver some comfort quilts. She had made one that had lovely pink fabrics in it. I was going to put it into the Comfort Quilt display at BeDazzled and at the last moment decided it would be lovely to take it to the Chemo Unit as she had personal experience of cancer in her family. Always, when I drop off the quilts, the nurses and volunteers ooh and ahh over them. Around the corner came another member of our group, who had a family member getting treatment and the pink quilt.the pink quilt butterfly border had been donated by that member. It certainly is a Circle of Giving! At the quilt show, we heard many exclaim Those are comfort quilts wow! How lucky was I to deliver them and to present one to a lady on her birthday while she was getting chemo! This spring we had some excitement - large donations of gorgeous, gorgeous fabrics were given to us. How generous people have been to us, and how humbling to know we have been entrusted with these beautiful fabrics for our community Comfort Quilts! It really does feel like a quilt store and ladies.i have the biggest stash in town!!! Although, the talk around some cutting boards indicates some ladies are coming a close second! We have been busy. I could use some volunteers to help with the washing and sorting and ironing. I can provide a bag and bring some to a meeting, you can collect it from my house, or I can drop off/pick up if you live fairly close. Please or call me if you are able to help. We are going to try some new things - making some jelly rolls and layer cakes, packs of matching fat quarters or matching lines to use with your favourite patterns. Our focus will be more on kits to take, as we have fabulous fabrics to make them out of. We want to make use of the co-ordinating lines and offer you some good quality fabric to work with. At the September meeting we will have Christmas stocking kits and placemat kits ready..get yours quickly as they are going to go FAST! For the first couple of months we will have prizes for numbered kits taken at each meeting.$10 dollar gift certificates to quilt stores..i am not above bribery and the monies are not out of our budget but from the garage sale at our meeting in the spring. Our Comfort Quilt Sew day: Saturday, September 29; 8:30ish to 3:30 at the Bradley Centre Our Focus will be BABY QUILTS for the NICU. If you have never been to a sew day this is the perfect one to try.have fun making a baby quilt!!! We will have kits made up, grab a kit and sew..pack a lunch and maybe some goodies to share. Have some FUN with us! Maybe win a prize? Play a game? Bring all your basic sewing equipment to sew. I will have a roll of batting available including backing pieces. There will be tables set up to sew, cut, and baste on, and irons and boards. Please bring your own pins to baste as we don't have any. I will bring some smaller projects too! A couple of reminders: COMFORT QUILTS If you are donating fabric it should be washed and be of good quality when you are making up baby quilts at home please use flannel on the back, I have lots of flannel if you need backing and batting just /phone me the size and I will get it ready for you Thank you to all the ladies who have offered to help with the Comfort Quilt Committee. This year we will have new faces at the table each month. The more the merrier! And thank you ladies for all your participation. And last but not least, WELCOME to Mirella Yanko who will be learning the key aspects of Comfort Quilts in the coming year. ~ Chris Kotzian, Comfort Quilt Coordinator Volume 40 No. 1 19

21 WORKSHOPS FOR THE FALL BOTANICAL BEAUTIES with Sandra Sandvik (This class is full) This design has two wallhanging layout sizes to choose from or you could do a table runner with 3 blocks. The flower petal blocks are created with curved foundation piecing. Acrylic templates with be available to help with the curved cutting process. You will learn free form foundation piecing, working with color (your choice of flowers for color inspiration), mitered corners, working with a small design board, making narrow borders and basic free form machine quilting and embellishing to finish your masterpiece! This pattern works up well in bali batiks, solids and small prints. Or make it modern! DATE: Sunday, October 14, 2018 PLACE: Parksville Community Centre TIME: 9:30 4:00 COST: $ $2 for handouts/ pattern QUILTING LEVEL: All levels BARGELLO TABLE RUNNER with Fran Henney This is a great introduction to Bargello as it makes up quite quickly, but yet looks stunning. The pattern is from the book Twist and Turn Bargello by Eileen Wright. It uses 10 fabrics in one colour group or two, light to dark. As this workshop is in November, why not consider Christmas fabric? DATE: Saturday, November 24, 2018 PLACE: Bradley Centre TIME: 9:30 4:00 COST: $40.00 QUILTING LEVEL: All levels ***NOTE*** Each participant needs a copy of the book Twist and Turn Bargello by Eileen Wright. She will sell copies of her book for less than any quilt store, and they will be $25 or $30 depending on number sold. There are 11 Bargello quilt patterns in the book. Workshops are a great way to learn a new technique or just a new way to create something lovely, and we always have a fun day. Please think about joining us. All info is on our website and at the meetings. If you have any ideas for other classes, drop an to workshops@parksvillequilthousequilters.com. Volume 40 No. 1 21
