Introduced by Lois Woytenko, the ladies represent tradition in quilting and how we should all begin our own quilting journey. I am sure they have some interesting stories to accompany their quilts too! I can t wait to hear them. 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Happy December, members and guests to our Newsletter. November was an activity filled time and I want to reflect on what this means. We started the month with our Quadra retreat. Many thanks to Cathy and Deb for a great time. The venue was rearranged so we could all quilt in one room and that made for more interaction amongst the retreaters. The food was delicious and filling. Always this is an opportunity to get things done and LEARN from our multi talented colleagues. Then we had our New Member Tea. 13 new members came and learned about our guild from Frankie, Nanette, Anne, Rosemary, Lola and myself. Thank you for taking the time to assist. It also gave us and them a better connection with other members. No one should feel stranded when they are new to the guild. And on to Workshops. By all accounts, Lola s presentation was stellar as always. Organized, clear and helpful. We may even see some completed projects at our show and tell. Anne, Marilyn and their team make this happen. Now we are in Christmas mode. Our sale will have happened by the time this goes out and I am confident it will be a success with many hands to make it go. All this goes to show that our volunteers make the guild work. We are still in need of a VP as Frankie is only filling in. Also, we now require a librarian as Sandra has had to step away for health reasons. Ronni has offered to help short term. I hope maybe some of our experienced or not experienced new or long time members will be able to fill the gaps. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. Take time to relax and enjoy friends and family. ~ Elaine Exhausted quilters in various stages of recovery in Homewood s Quadra Island Quilter Rehab area... Page 2 Quilt Talk December 2017

5 Please Note: December 11 Quilt Show Meeting Cancelled Next Quilt Show Meeting January (same date as guild 10:00 AM BEDAZZLED QUILT SHOW CALL FOR ENTRY Some of our members have already submitted their entry forms to display their quilts in our BeDazzled Show in June As our March 29th deadline approaches we are sure that many more will arrive. One of the FAQs is "do I really need to put a hanging sleeve on all entries?" The answer is yes, hanging 300+ quilts of varying sizes and shapes is a huge job and to make the job go as smoothly as possible and to make the show safe and secure we require that all quilts have a sleeve attached. The sleeve requirements are: All quilts must have a hanging sleeve attached: The sleeve must be a minimum of 3 inches (i.e. 6 inches in circumference). Temporary sleeves are acceptable. This applies to all quilts (bed, lap, baby, wall hanging etc.) as some are strung with rods and others are pinned in order to display. There is one award, "The Presidents Award", that is presented to one quilt entered in the show. This quilt is chosen by the Guild s Past Presidents. The quilt must fulfill some very specific criteria. It must be: -Bed Sized (Twin bed size is acceptable) - Hand Quilted - Hand Appliqued - Hand or Machine pieced - As for all quilts shown in the show it must not have been shown in a PQHQG show in the past. The "Presidents Award" is presented to honour the art and skill of work done by hand. The award is given to the entry that meets the criteria and is the best example of workmanship and design. ~ Margaret Furnell and Frankie Michaluk Quilt Show Call for Entry Committee Volume 39 No. 4 5

6 BEDAZZLED QUILT SHOW OCEANSIDE ARENA LOBBY The Kids Zone is located in the lobby and is part of the plan for an amazing entrance to your quilt show. Imagine guests approaching the lobby of the Oceanside arena with a sea of quilts everywhere in windows, hanging from rafters, on walls and a special area with items using the BeDazzled colours and logo. They will be amazed with the welcome! Oceanside Arena gave us permission to hang quilts from the ceiling. The arena has the equipment and staff willing to hang quilts under our guidance. We need your help to make this a reality. Can you help by looking through your treasure of quilts and wall hangings? Can you use the BeDazzled Logo to make items for the lobby and the boutique? Do you have quilts and wall hangings that are bright, colourful and finished? Do you have quilts or wall hangings on black or light coloured backgrounds? Do you have quilts or wall hangings from previous quilt shows (with a sleeve)? This is a lobby decorating journey - we need queen, double or twin sized quilts to hang above the pond area 4 6 queen sized quilts to hang above the concession area Lots of art quilts to hang in the windows at the entrance to the show 3 window art quilts 24 L x 48 W 3 window art quilts 18 L x 24 W 4 window art quilts 18 L x 12 W 3-6 crib, premie or lap quilts to decorate the Kids Zone (in the lobby) Lots of BeDazzled items to showcase the theme. Deadline for participation is February 28, Please help decorate the lobby. Send a photo and the dimensions of your quilt or wall hanging to: RoseMary Slaney rm.slaney@gmail.com The process for selection will be based on spaces to fill, the size of your quilt or quilt art, and lively colours. This is not a competition or intended to create extra work. Extra quilts submitted may also be used to decorate the Wine/ Beer Balcony. Let s have some fun decorating. EVERYONE who participates by sending in a photo has their name entered for a participation spa basket. Help us BeDazzle everyone who walks in the door! CALL FOR CHARITY RECOMMENDATIONS One more call for you, the members of our guild, to be the ones to choose which charities will be supported by the donations collected as entry to the trunk shows. We are asking you, if you have not already done so, to let us know which local charities you feel are most important to you, and to bring those forward at the December Guild meetings. Older Traditional patterns like the log cabin and nine patch that are older than dirt may be copyright free. And of course if an item is from your own design repertoire it too may be free of copyright. However if you are submitting an item or quilt made from a purchased pattern where the designer is someone other than yourself it is respectful to give the designer credit (giving credit where credit is due). If ever in question most designers welcome your query and are quite often delighted and thrilled to give permission to use their design. Please also remember to give due-acknowledgement to our long arm quilters as they too spend many a creative hour on our projects. 9 The Night Before a Quilter s Christmas Stacks of fat quarters, tipped over in streams. Visions of Log Cabins turned into dreams. When what to her wondering eyes should appear, But a bus full of quilters with all of their gear. They went straight to work with just a few mutters, Sorting and stitching and brandishing cutters. The patterns emerged from all of the clutter, Like magic the fabrics arranged in a flutter. Log Cabins, Lone Stars, Flying Geese and Bear Tracks Each quilt was a beauty even the backs. Her house how it twinkled, her quilts how they glowed. The cookies were baking, the stockings were sewed. Their work was all done, so they folded their frames, And packed up their needles, without giving their names. They boarded the bus, and checked the next address. More quilts to be made, another quilter in distress. She heard one voice echo, as they drove out of sight, Happy quilting to all and to all a good night! ~ Author Unknown MISSING BLOCK PATTERN NEEDED August Block Pattern for Calendar Quilt pattern by Connie Sampson 12 inch block Phone Lana McLean at Volume 39 No. 4 9

13 NOVEMBER WORKSHOP... We had a lovely workshop on November 18th taught by Lola Denesyk. Lola taught us about Celtic Knots, and we made our own beautiful wall hangings or cushion covers. We had a little excitement when we blew the power circuit, but we worked it out and at the end of the day everyone was delighted with their results. Thanks so much Lola. Thanks also to Ruth and Kathy for their angel and coffee support. ~ Anne Pelton Volume 39 No. 4 13

14 UPCOMING WORKSHOPS... Starting off the New Year (can it be 2018 already?) we will be offering the three following workshops: SPEED DATE with IMPROV (wallhanging or table topper size) with Krista Hennebury ***** This workshop is full but we will be taking a wait list ***** Think of this class as speed dating with improvisational piecing techniques that include curves and free cutting. It will be fast-paced and a lot of fun: several techniques are introduced and demonstrated one after the other with very little time to second guess, stress or obsess over perfection. Every student will end up with a unique, original quilt! The focus here is to explore line, shape and happenstance in abstract design, so keep things simply graphic by using solid-coloured fabrics in black, white and one pop of colour. DATE: Saturday, January 13, 2018 PLACE: Parksville Community Centre TIME: 9:30 4:00 COST: $50.00 QUILTING LEVEL: All levels MY TWO BABY SISTERS PLACEMATS or MINI STARS TABLE RUNNER with Anne Hall Have you ever wanted to try paper piecing using the well-known Judy Neimeyer method? My Two Baby Sisters gives you four 12 x19 placemats, while Mini Stars creates a 17 x 51 runner. Both are great introductory patterns as they are small projects using the same technique for all of the paper piecing, and can be completed very quickly. 20 COMFORT QUILTS As we approach December, our Christmas season, we often refer to it as the giving season. With Comfort Quilts we are giving all year, our time, our donations and our love of our craft and of sharing. Nursing homes will often save quilts for the senior with no family. They are given your generous gift at Christmas, and how special and cherished that quilt will be! It would be remiss of me to not acknowledge the cards received. Excerpts include: SOS: These lovingly created works will bring colour and joy to our meal recipients. ONAS: Thanks for the beautiful stockings. We are busy filling them! The Gardens: The quilts are beautiful and will make so many people happy. Chemo Unit, Nanaimo Hospital: The quilts are loved and appreciated by all. Renal Unit- Nanaimo Hospital: The staff report the patients love their quilts, their faces light up when they get one. Trillium: Thank you, they are so appreciated. Stanford: The quilts will be cherished! Our quilts are loved and so appreciated, thank you ladies! Ruth Stewart & myself replenished the flannel supply with a shopping spree at Fabricland. How fun, buying fabric! We did buy a small amount of kid s fabric but our stash is low on those, the prints are sadly outdated and the fabric is tired. We are also low on tone on tone blenders. If you could check your stashes, your donations of 100% cotton (no flannel) would be very appreciated. Bring it to the December or January meeting. Thanks! I am very excited about some ideas I have for the New Year. I hope they will inspire you to make a Comfort Quilt. I wish you and your loved ones a beautiful Christmas season, and a Sew-Special New Year! ~ Chrisanne Kotzian wetkist@gmail.com Page 20 Quilt Talk December 2017
