1 January 2018 Parksville Quilt House Quilters Guild PO Box 1177, Parksville, BC V9P 2H2 Purpose of the Guild: To promote and encourage interest in the excellence of quilting MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Happy New Year to all of you quilters. As I reflect on the past year and think about 2018, I am grateful and excited. We have enjoyed 3 months in our new venue and from all accounts it was a good move. Our Christmas pot lucks were well attended and we have lots of room to enjoy each other s company. Our seasoned members did a wonderful job presenting their quilting journeys. Thank you to Joyce and her team continuing to provide us with interesting programs. Our Guild is now a member of Parksville Chamber of Commerce. This will provide us opportunities for more community involvement, and particularly advertising for our show in June. Thanks to Marlene for the suggestion. And the SHOW. From now until June it will be full steam ahead. There will be many opportunities to assist. Some very small jobs for those of you who like to participate but with time or other restraints, can only do a bit. There is something for everyone to do. Be ready to check out the volunteer sheets at our next Guild meeting. A bit of sadness creeps in when I remember the recent sudden passing of Nancy Connah. A reminder to us all of how quickly life can change. Nancy was an active though quiet member involved in several aspects of the Guild. She will be missed. As is the way our Guild members are, Margaret Furnell has taken over membership and two others have agreed to be her apprentices for next year. Fran Henney has taken on the Stay At Home Retreats along with Sara Medd. Leigh Winter and Elizabeth Murphy have stepped up to look after our merchants for the BeDazzled show in June. Thank you so very much. ~ Elaine Next Meeting: January 15 Doors open at 12:30 pm Day meeting 1:00 pm Evening meeting 6:30 pm Parksville Community Conference Centre 132 Jensen Ave E, Parksville Coffee & Treats If your last name begins with one of the following letters, please bring treats to whichever meeting you attend: M N O P Q R Coffee and tea by donation Please bring your own mug Remember Coffee Mug and Food Name Tag Membership Card Before you leave home, check your for a possible meeting cancellation. 2 JANUARY PROGRAM Now that we are finished celebrating the holiday season, it is time to get busy, taking better care of ourselves, cleaning out our rooms and separating what someone else can use. The January program is a large garage sale, and what better way to rid ourselves of unwanted items or to buy that very thing we have been looking for. Please come out and shop! We have 12 tables reserved already. If you need a table and are a Guild member please me, jmmclellan@shaw.ca, before January 13 th. If you have a table already, please clearly mark your prices, which will save confusion. Thank you. ~ Joyce McLellan WANTED Someone to organize a bus to the CQA Show in Vancouver next June. Also possibly accommodations. Contact Elaine if you are interested. Page 2 Quilt Talk January 2018

5 BEDAZZLED QUILT SHOW OCEANSIDE ARENA LOBBY Items for Lobby Décor When people approach the venue and see quilts hanging in the windows and from the rafters inside Oceanside Arena they will BEDAZZLED! What a welcome and what a grand entrance to the 2018 show! Oceanside Arena has the equipment and staff to help us hang quilts from the rafters. Can you look through your treasure of quilts and wall hangings. Give your quilt(s) a chance to shine and help us decorate the lobby. What s needed? Colourful quilts with a sleeve. If we can get a few that reflect the BeDazzled theme/colours that would be nice. About queen, double or twin sized quilts. These will be hung above the concession area and above the pond windows in the lobby. Wall hangings (landscape style) or small quilts to hang in the windows at the entrance to the show. They will be hung using a rod and suction cups inside the window frame. 3-6 crib, preemie or lap quilts to decorate the Kids Zone in the lobby. All items are hung high and totally above the public s reach. There will be security in the lobby from 6:00 PM Midnight when the arena is locked down. The lobby is an extension of the show; we are using this space as part of the quilt show, so the area will be monitored and supervised at all times during the show. The process for selection will be based on spaces to fill, the size of your quilt or quilt art, and lively colours. This is not a competition or intended to create extra work. Extra quilts submitted may also be used to decorate the Wine/ Beer Balcony. Help us make this a reality. EVERYONE who participates by sending in a photo has their name entered for a participation spa basket. Help us BeDazzle everyone who walks in the door! Deadline for participation is March 25, Please help decorate the lobby. Send a photo and the dimensions of your quilt or wall hanging to: RoseMary Slaney rm.slaney@gmail.com, or drop it off at the quilt show table at a Guild meeting. 6 BEDAZZLED QUILT SHOW RAFFLES History of The Quilt Shows For each quilt show since 1981 the Guild has applied for a license and members have sold raffle tickets. This is the tradition of your Guild we indirectly influence warmth and love by giving quilts and quilted items through our Comfort Quilt Program to A patient undergoing chemo treatments A premature baby in an incubator A senior at Trillium Lodge, Stanford Place, etc. A patient taking renal treatments Placemats for seniors at Christmas Christmas stockings to seniors and many more. Monies raised through the raffle directly support the Guild s charitable and scholarship programs for three years. Each raffle ticket sold makes a difference to the lives of people in our communities. Raffle Tickets - BeDazzled Tickets for the raffle go on sale January 1 st, We have 5 months and 24 days to sell 5,000 raffle tickets for the BeDazzled Raffle Challenge. The raffle committee in 2015 did a fabulous job selling 4300 tickets for a value of $ Here s how you can make a difference to making this shows raffle a winning success! Each member prepays and buys one book of tickets. This means we all make a contribution to the success of the raffle. For example if all 314 members sell one book of 10 tickets ($2.00 a ticket = $20 for a book of tickets), we achieve $628o. Sell your tickets to your friends, neighbours, bridge buddies, relatives... Selling tickets to the people around you is great PR you touch someone with the name/date of the quilt show, and time of raffle draw. Return completed stubs from each book of tickets, which will be added to the raffle drum by the Raffle Committee. All five raffle prizes will be 2:00 PM on June 24 th, All raffle stubs and unsold tickets must be returned by May 31 st, Great Incentive for Selling Books of Raffle Tickets!!! For each book of tickets sold and returned, a Guild member has a chance to enter their name into a draw for the Super Raffle Basket. This is a grand prize the basket has a value of $ and is loaded with quilted goodies and lots of surprises. This draw is limited to members who sell books of tickets. Each book of tickets sold equates to one entry for the Super Raffle Basket. Tickets sold by the committee at other Guilds, events, etc. are not qualified to enter into this draw. Help your quilt show succeed Sign up for your book(s) of raffle tickets. Raffle sales start in January. Watch for the unveiling of the Raffle Quilts at the February Guild Meetings. ~ Fran Henney, Tracey Turner Raffle Coordinators Page 6 Quilt Talk January 2018

8 BEDAZZLED QUILT SHOW CHALLENGE Happy New Year all you Challengers! Hopefully you all have an idea of what your Challenge quilt will be, if you are not actually finished. Some ladies expressed a wish for the Challenge kit after they were all sold. I was wondering if any members who purchased kits have decided that it is just something they will add to their stash, as inspiration has just not come, and they would like to part with their kit. I was thinking if we have people in each category, perhaps we could have a swap between them. If you fall into either category please me at philzapf@telus.net and let s see if we can get you folks together. Hopefully this makes sense as I am operating this keyboard under heavy cold medication. In parting; beets, beef, beam (sun, laser, moon????) ~ Philippa and Cathy Martino ~ Author Unknown This is why we do what we do Page 8 Quilt Talk January 2018

19 COMFORT QUILTS Comfort Quilts prize draw winners: Cheryl Frehlich, Shirley Bone, Grace Lawrence, Betty Howes, Ginette Schewe, Stephanie Gislason, and Sharon Hebert. Our prizes included gift certificates, fabric, thread, clips and seam rippers just tokens of appreciation, no sewing machines were won. What I have delivered so far this year: 148 quilts 74 flannel wraps 113 knit hats 4 incubator covers 12 knit wraps 1 knit blanket 117 placemats 28 table runners 69 Christmas stockings 17 mug rugs In case you missed my feel good story about the Full Circle of Giving... As I was sorting the quilts, knowing that I was going to Nanaimo Regional to drop off baby quilts and hats for the nursery, I called the Social Worker at the Renal Unit, and asked her if they ever got younger kids as I had a larger kids quilt. She said that no they did not. I said I would be by with a few quilts I had chosen for them. Renal patients when going through dialysis can get cold, so I had some with nice flannel on the back. Also, the men eye up the ladies quilts so I wanted to take a few manly ones! The social worker was standing near the front desk when I arrived. I pulled out the quilts showing off what our talented ladies do. One of the quilts made was started at the Coombs Fair; it used fabric celebrating Canada 150. Fairgoers were encouraged to sew up squares. Sara and Cathy organized and Sara finished off these gorgeous quilts. As we stood talking about the quilts, it was mentioned that every quilt is a conversation piece, and every quilt is a hug of comfort. I said funny how you would say a conversation piece, and I told her the story of the Canada quilt, mentioning how and where we started this particular quilt. With a warm and genuine smile, she said I have the perfect recipient a dialysis patient from the Coombs community...full Circle of Giving! My enthusiasm comes from still being a new quilter. I continue to be in awe of every quilt that comes to me from all of you wonderful ladies. I promise I wipe up the drool! I will be bringing little projects for the ladies that may be busy with their own quilts but still want to contribute. These projects will be bagged up. They include: 36 X 36 incubator covers, 10 X 20 flannel wraps, and some little incubator baby mittens. I had the gals at my other volunteer job cut the flannel. Top kits and numbered kits will be available too. Numbered kits will now have their own draw at the year end round up. I will take your name from the lists. There are still a lot of numbered kits available in the storage locker. I have some leftover cuts and donated batting pieces that can be used for quilt as you go. Let me know your preferred size. We had a request for some Fidget Quilts. Try one just to say you did! They asked for 14 X14 inches...how fun of a little project is this! Only 4 kits available in January. I will have a sample at the meeting. Please bring your extra stash fabric of juvenile or tone on tone fabrics to the January meeting. Unused Christmas fabric is welcome also, as we used up what we had in the Christmas stocking kits and placemat kits. I would love to take these off your hands so you can stimulate the economy at the local quilt shops. I was planning a Comfort Quilt kit making day in January, but this will be postponed for the moment, as I have been summoned for Jury Duty. All I can think of is Quilty! I am sure my sense of humour will not be appreciated. Happy New Year and may your year be filled with things that comfort you! ~ Chrisanne Kotzian, wetkist@gmail.com 19
